PUTRAJAYA: MasterCard Worldwide recorded an increase in total spending among its local and overseas cardholders during the recently concluded 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (1MMSC) 2013.
Total spending rose to RM5.5 billion from RM5.4 billion previously. Over the same period, there was also an increase in number of transactions to 19.4 million from 18.9 million previously.
MasterCard country head for Malaysia and Brunei, Safdar Khan, said the increase in spending among MasterCard's cardholders demonstrates Malaysia's growing popularity as an international tourist destination.
"The continuous participation of overseas and local MasterCard cardholders in the 1MMSC 2013 holds a positive indication for Malaysia. "We are pleased to know that Malaysia is still growing in stature as a popular tourist destination for shopping," he said at the MasterCard 1MMSC 2013 grand prize giving ceremony, here, yesterday.
Also present was Tourism Malaysia deputy director general Datuk Azizan Noordin.
Malaysian MasterCard cardholder transactions were high for the 1MMSC 2013, contributing towards a total spending of some RM5 billion with 18 million transactions.
As MasterCard was the official card of 1MMSC 2013 for the 13th year running, its cardholders were rewarded with daily redemption from more than 10 participating malls nationwide, various vouchers and a grand holiday getaway throughout the 1MMSC period.
