KRU expands cultural footprint in Shah Alam

KRU Entertainment is broadening its creative footprint beyond music and film with an ambitious push into culture, entertainment and community programming, unveiling 18 events at Aneka Walk in Shah Alam through the end of the year.

The initiative is part of a larger vision to transform the destination into a vibrant lifestyle and cultural hub where audiences can experience performances, food, heritage, arts and entrepreneurship in one space.

At the heart of the programme is Kayangan, a signature weekly cultural experience that combines traditional Malay cuisine curated by Datuk Chef Zam with storytelling, live music, dance, visual elements and theatrical performances.

Its inaugural production, titled 'Hikayat Nusantara', will take audiences on a journey through the history and culture of the Nusantara (the Malay Archipelago), bringing together different forms of traditional and contemporary presentation.

Beginning Sept 4, Kayangan will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, making it a regular fixture at Aneka Walk rather than a one-off cultural showcase.

TOURIST ATTRACTION

KRU Entertainment hopes the production will develop into a cultural tourism attraction capable of drawing not only Shah Alam residents, but also visitors from across Malaysia and international tourists.

For KRU Entertainment president and chief executive officer Datuk Norman Abdul Halim, consistent programming will be crucial to the venue's long-term appeal.

"Today, we are not merely introducing Aneka Walk, but what visitors can look forward to here over the coming months," he says.

"A total of 18 events have been planned through the end of 2026, with each offering a different experience and appealing to different audiences."

The line-up will span music, arts, culture, gastronomy, entertainment, as well as family and community activities.

Among the traditional elements are performances such as 'wayang kulit' and 'joget lambak', allowing audiences to appreciate various forms of Malaysian heritage alongside more contemporary entertainment.

The intention, says Norman, is to create a destination where visitors will have a reason to return regularly rather than simply attend a single event.

BEYOND THE KRU BRAND

That wider vision also reflects Norman's belief that KRU should no longer be viewed solely through the achievements of the three Abdul Halim brothers — he, Datuk Yusry and Edry.

While the trio remain closely associated with the KRU brand, Norman sees the company as a broader creative platform capable of working with artistes, performers, filmmakers, entrepreneurs and other industry players.

"Don't look at KRU as just the three of us. KRU is much bigger," Norman says. "We'll collaborate with artistes who are under our wings. It doesn't have to be limited to the three of us."

He adds that KRU is open to giving other artistes opportunities to perform, organise programmes, run businesses and operate booths during events at Aneka Walk.

The emphasis on collaboration extends to the venue's commercial offering.

Aneka Walk, part of the SA Sentral development, covers 4,500sq m and stretches 300m, with capacity for up to 3,000 visitors.

It has 150 business lots catering to food, fashion, crafts, arts and music, creating space for entrepreneurs and creative practitioners to build their own audiences alongside KRU's programming.

Temasya Aneka will also introduce some of the destination's first tenants, including Kek Lapis Warisan, which highlights 'kek lapis' as a local heritage product, and KRU Cafe, which will open its first outlet at Aneka Walk.

Together with the cultural programming, the businesses are intended to create an environment where food, retail, performance and heritage complement one another.

ECONOMIC ROLE

The project is also expected to play an economic role.

Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) group chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas says Aneka Walk is being developed not merely as a place for visitors to spend time, but also as a platform for building a community of traders and opening new economic opportunities, particularly for Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

"PKNS built Aneka Walk to attract people. With Aneka Walk, it is not only about people coming to enjoy the atmosphere, but also about building a community of traders through activities."

He notes that its location near shopping centres, the PKNS Complex, Taman Tasik Shah Alam, hotels and commercial areas gives the destination an advantage in attracting visitors.

For Norman, the cultural push at Aneka Walk represents another way for KRU to use its experience in entertainment to create opportunities for others.

Rather than keeping the spotlight exclusively on its own productions, the company wants the venue to become a meeting point for different creative communities.

SOLO PROJECTS

Though both Yusry and Edry are working on their own solo ventures, Norman is not worried about catching up with them.

With a characteristic joke, he says he is happy to let his younger brothers go first, just like they did when it came to marriage.

"I let my younger brothers go first. I used to want them to get married quickly, so they got married before me. I was the last one," he says. "So, it's the same with solo projects. Let them go first."

For now, Norman's focus is less on stepping out alone and more on building a larger stage for others.

Through Aneka Walk, KRU is betting that culture, heritage, entertainment and entrepreneurship can come together to create a destination that is not only commercially viable, but also rooted in the communities and traditions it seeks to celebrate.

The Temasya Aneka programme is expected to continue into 2027 through a collaboration between PKNS and KRU Entertainment.

Aswara's FTA 2026: A vibrant cultural celebration of contemporary Southeast Asian theatre

KUALA LUMPUR: The Theatre Faculty of the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) will host Festival Teater Antarnusa 2026 (FTA 2026) at the Aswara campus, here, from July 16 to 19.

The four-day festival is expected to serve as a dynamic platform bringing together theatre practitioners, industry figures and emerging artistes from five neighbouring countries to celebrate the diversity of the regional theatre landscape.

Held under the theme "Tanda. Temu. Tamu.", FTA 2026 is positioned as a holistic platform for cultural interaction while promoting greater appreciation of contemporary theatre.

Visitors are expected to experience the richness of regional cultures, modern aesthetics and the creativity of theatre practitioners through a wide range of programmes throughout the festival.

FTA 2026 will open with an official ceremony at the Aswara Orchestra Hall on July 16, officiated by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot.

The event will from 9am to 10pm daily, featuring theatre workshops led by regional artistes aimed at nurturing talent and enhancing participants' understanding of the performing arts.

The festival will also feature the Work in Progress programme, an interactive sharing and performance session showcasing the creative process behind the scenes while exploring new theatrical works.

Another highlight will be Kedai Cerita Runcit, a series of short site-specific monodramas offering audiences an alternative and unconventional theatre experience.

Using casual venues as performance spaces, the productions go beyond entertainment, serving as platforms for artistic dialogue, the exchange of ideas and stronger collaboration within the creative community.

The Showcase programme will feature large-scale contemporary theatre performances by invited artistes and theatre groups from Malaysia and abroad.

Aswara said the festival reflects its proactive role in strengthening arts and cultural education, not only at the academic level but also as a catalyst for a more progressive and competitive creative arts industry.

The festival also serves as a platform to elevate Malaysia's arts and cultural heritage on the international stage while exploring contemporary theatre without compromising the authenticity of traditions that define the region.

To ensure the arts remain accessible to all, admission to all FTA 2026 activities is free, except for the Showcase performances, which require a RM10 entry fee.

Seat reservations can be made via the CloudJoi platform.

RWMF 2026 gathers music legends in Santubong

KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2026 kicks off at the Sarawak Cultural Village, Damai, Santubong, today, featuring three big names set to heat up the stage at Borneo's most prestigious music festival.

Local music legend Datuk M. Nasir will open tonight's performance, followed by the world-famous funk and soul band The Commodores tomorrow before the international jazz-funk group Incognito closes the festival on Sunday.

Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said the presence of these international artistes proves that RWMF continues to be a platform uniting music from various cultures and generations.

"This year's lineup reflects RWMF's global spirit in celebrating the diversity of world music, while also strengthening its position as one of the most prestigious music festivals in the region," he said.

RWMF was first introduced in 1998, inspired by Canadian musician Randy Raine-Reusch, who was fascinated by the unique ethnic music of Sarawak, particularly the sape melodies, after conducting research in the state in 1997.

His deep interest in the traditional musical instruments of the Orang Ulu community motivated Randy to collaborate with the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to realise an international music festival.

As an initial step, a group of Sarawak musicians was formed and sent to perform at the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Marseille, France.

With the help of Jayl Langub from the Sarawak Customs Council, famous sape players like Asang Lawai, Tegit Usat, Erang Lahang, and Uchau Bilong were brought together in the group before training with Randy in Kuching.

Their performance at WOMEX received positive responses from agents, managers and European music festival directors, paving the way for the organisation of RWMF.

In March 1998, STB approved funding for the festival, with the Sarawak Atelier Association acting as technical support, while Randy was appointed as the main consultant.

The inaugural RWMF attracted about 300 visitors, but the festival quickly grew each year to become one of the most anticipated music events in Sarawak.

Last year, RWMF managed to gather more than 30,000 visitors from around the world thanks to a mix of performances by local and international artistes.

Over more than two decades, the RWMF stage has been graced by big names like Kitaro from Japan, Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo, Earth, Wind & Fire Experience and Big Mountain.

Datuk Zainal Abidin and internationally-renowned Sarawak-born singer Zee Avi are among the local artistes who have entertained fans at the festival.

RWMF has also been an important stage for introducing the beauty of sape music to the world through performances by the likes of At Adau and Alena Murang.

This spectacular event will transform Merdeka Square into a vibrant stage celebrating Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity through music, movement, and storytelling.

Beyond its cultural significance, the event is also anticipated to generate a positive economic impact, creating opportunities for hotels, tourism operators, and local businesses, while simultaneously serving as a model of sustainable tourism to showcase to the global audience as Kuala Lumpur welcomes visitors from across Malaysia and around the world.

Malaysia strikes a chord as regional concert hub with RM1.72 billion boost

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is steadily cementing its position as a regional concert and events hub, with more than 450 events staged nationwide last year.

These were reported to have generated nearly RM1.72 billion, providing a significant boost to the country's tourism sector.

The achievement was shared by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil in a recent Facebook post, highlighting the growing importance of live entertainment in driving economic activity and attracting international attention.

Fahmi said the milestone reflects the immense potential of the live entertainment industry as a catalyst for economic growth, while also stimulating tourism and related support sectors.

"Overall, Malaysia's cultural and creative industry contributes around 6.8 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to more than RM130 billion," he said.

"This year, we are targeting even higher achievements."

He added that initiatives such as the Concert and Event in Malaysia Incentive (CEMI) have been introduced to attract international artistes, draw in tourists and expand the broader industry ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Fahmi revealed that the ministry will propose additional support for event organisers to the Cabinet, following the extension of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign through 2027.

He stressed that the move is crucial in strengthening Malaysia's standing as a leading destination for large-scale events in the region, particularly as competition intensifies among neighbouring countries.

At the same time, Fahmi underscored the growing role of the creative economy as a key pillar of the nation's future, driven largely by the younger generation.

"To Malaysian youths building careers in this field, the government believes in your talent and capabilities," he said.

"The creative economy is no longer a peripheral sector — it is a vital force shaping the nation's future."

Tourism Malaysia And Dewan Filharmonik Petronas: Embarks Strategic Partnership Through The Signing Of A Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU)

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 March 2026 - Tourism Malaysia and Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) today embark on a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Ms. Siti Azlina binti Abd Latiff, Chief Executive Officer of DFP, and Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal bin Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia at EQ Kuala Lumpur. This collaboration is aimed at strengthening the arts and cultural landscape in the capital, while elevating Malaysia’s position as a premier tourism destination in support of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign aspirations.

According to Ms. Siti Azlina, this partnership marks another significant milestone for DFP as the premier concert hall in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), which is widely regarded as a leading orchestra in Southeast Asia. She noted that DFP takes great pride in this collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, as such partnerships generate a far greater impact than individual efforts. This synergy allows both parties to complement one another in achieving higher standards and fulfilling the aspirations of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the goals of the VM2026 campaign to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a world-class destination for arts and culture. Through this strategic collaboration, Tourism Malaysia and DFP will jointly promote high-quality performing arts experiences to both domestic and international visitors. This initiative simultaneously supports efforts to diversify the nation's tourism products and empowers Kuala Lumpur as a regional hub for arts and culture.

For the past 28 years, DFP and the MPO have been at the forefront of the creative industry, representing the highest level of performing arts and cultural presentations. Throughout the concert seasons, both entities deliver a consistent and artistically excellent programme all year round, providing a platform for arts and culture appreciation through a dazzling line-up of local and international artists. Each season showcases a variety of musical offerings, with genres ranging from classical, pop, and jazz to movie soundtracks, anime, and traditional ethnic music.

As a strategic partner, the DFP brand will be expanded globally through integration across Tourism Malaysia’s digital and physical platforms, including overseas information centres. This collaboration will also see the creation of attractive packages for both Malaysians and international visitors, featuring discounted concert tickets and guided tours of the concert hall.

This collaboration also presents an opportunity for DFP to explore the creation of cultural content specifically curated for the VM2026 campaign. Such a move will strengthen the synergy between both organisations in upholding the national mandate to foster an appreciation for the arts while enriching the cultural identity of the local community.
