Tourism Malaysia Resumes To Attract The Indian Market At SATTE 2025

NEW DELHI, 19 February 2025 - Tourism Malaysia returns to the South Asia’s Travel & Tourism Exchange (SATTE), one of India’s largest tourism fair for its 21st participation in New Delhi. The three-day event occurring from 19th to 21st February is a continuous effort to keep Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination in the minds of Indian travellers.

Tourism Malaysia intends to focus on niche products such as shopping, golfing, luxury tourism, soft tourism, theme parks and honeymoon packages to inspire the global campaign of Visit Malaysia 2026 at this year’s SATTE. Consequently, Tourism Malaysia is also leveraging the niche product segments such as wedding with Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).

Being recognized as the Best MICE Destination 2024 in the Indian market, Malaysia continues to maintain its reputation and a destination of choice for Indian corporations. With approximately more than 40,000 trade visitors, the event anticipates a significant increase in Indian tourists to Malaysia through the rigorous promotion and stronger cooperation between tour operators and members of the tourism fraternity.

The Malaysian delegation is headed by Mr. Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director of Tourism Malaysia New Delhi Office, together with 58 organisations representing tour agents, hotel and resort operators, tourism product owners, airline operators, Sabah Tourism Board and Tourism Melaka.

Mr Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director of Tourism Malaysia New Delhi Office stated: “Tourism Malaysia remains committed in attracting a growing number of Indian visitors, catering to their diverse preferences. The Indian market has been a significant source of visitors to Malaysia for over two decades. With the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign, we are focused on significantly increasing arrivals from the Indian market.”

India has been a priority market for Malaysia, given the strong economic ties with cultural connections between the two countries. Hence, India is currently Malaysia’s sixth-largest source of visitors.

In 2024, Malaysia recorded a total of 38 million visitor arrivals, with 1.4 million coming from India. In terms of air connectivity, 240 flights with 45,672 seats are offered weekly between India and Malaysia, operated by Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, AirAsia, Air India, and IndiGo.

Furthermore, Tourism Malaysia will leverage on the announcement of the visa-free policy for Indian travellers to Malaysia until 31st December 2026 as this is an opportunity to promote increased travel from India to Malaysia.

Tourism Malaysia is currently conducting various promotional activities in the Indian market such as, the Malaysia Food and Cultural Festival from the 17th to 23rd February at Pullman Hotel New Delhi Aerocity alongside its participation in the recent Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) 2025 from 30th January to 1st February in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia has also concluded a roadshow campaign across three main cities in India, namely Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kochi from the 2nd to the 11th February.

Big Indian destination wedding bells toll strongly

The Indian destination wedding market is growing exponentially, spreading joy to both domestic destinations as well as overseas ones.

Speaking at the PATA Travel Mart 2023 Forum, Rajeev Jain, founder and managing director, Rashi Entertainment India, noted that the market is growing at a rate of 30 per cent and had generated approximately US$40 billion in the period between October and December 2022, based on a report released by ICICI Bank.

“This highlights the immense scale and significance of the sector,” said Jain.

Other research conducted by Ernst & Young and Deloitte pegged the global wedding industry at US$400 billion, with India alone accounting for a significant US$50 billion share.

Jain said: “Indian weddings are not just about single-room bookings; they represent a colossal affair, often involving bookings for 500 rooms per night. Despite soaring prices for hotels, artists, and other essentials, Indians are continuing to invest in their dream weddings – 25 per cent of budgets are directed to venues, hotels, catering, and logistics.”

In India, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, Delhi, Goa, Mussoorie, and Mahabalipuram are a hit with couples looking to celebrate their union in a big way. However, escalating hotel rates, especially in popular wedding destinations, are forcing Indian couples to explore international alternatives for their nuptials.

“Countries like Bahrain and Oman are emerging as competitive alternatives due to their relatively lower costs for hosting high-end Indian weddings. The UAE, Turkey, and Bali are also (attracting attention),” said Jain.

Thailand, however, appears to be losing steam among Indian lovebirds, observed Jain, who shared that the destination is now hosting just 375 to 400 weddings compared to 1,000 weddings annually before.

Malaysia, no stranger to lavish Indian destination weddings, is looking to take a bigger slice of the pie.

Musa Yusof, deputy director general, promotion, Tourism Malaysia, told TTG Asia: “Indian weddings is one of the niche markets we are focused on. Our priority has been on making Malaysian wedding products ready for the Indians. We participate in wedding shows in India and work closely with Indian wedding planners.”

Musa emphasised that Malaysia is an increasingly exciting option for Indian couples, considering the expanded range of hotels ready for such celebrations.

“There are many hotels in Malaysia that are keen to tap the potential vested in the Indian destination wedding market,” he added.

Some of the destinations Tourism Malaysia is eager to highlight for Indian destination weddings include Kuala Lumpur, Port Dickson, Sabah, Langkawi and Selangor.

They attended the wedding seminar at the Quill City Mall, here, today, where they were welcomed by the Deputy Director General (Promotion) of Tourism Malaysia, Y.Bhg. Dato' Mohmed Razip Hasan who presented them with a certificate of appreciation.

Before the seminar, the participants had the opportunity to visit the Langkawi Island for a familiarisation trip and product inspections. Among the hotels and resorts they visited included the Westin Langkawi, St. Regis Langkawi, Aloft Langkawi and Meritus Pelangi Langkawi.

In Kuala Lumpur, they visited the Gold Coast Avani Sepang, Palace of the Golden Horses and Sheraton Imperial Hotel. They also got the chance to visit Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan during their stay here.

Promoting Malaysia As Wedding Destination In New Delhi

New Delhi, 26 September 2019 – Tourism Malaysia and Wedding Affair have jointly organised MALAYSIA WEDDING CONCLAVE in New Delhi today. The event aims at highlighting the unparalleled potential of Malaysia on the wedding destination map. Among the attendees were High Commissioner of Malaysia to India, H.E. Dato’ Hidayat Abdul Hamid, Tourism Malaysia New Delhi Director, Sulaiman Bin Suip and Editor-In-Chief Wedding Affair Rajnish Rathi.

The exclusive event was attended by the leading wedding planners from North India. A B2B session was organised for the wedding planners to interact with selected representatives from Malaysian hotels, resorts and airlines. The soiree witnessed an enthralling performance by a 20-member cultural troupe from Malaysia. The troupe was sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism, Arts & Culture Ministry to showcase enticing Malaysian dance forms and traditional musical instruments.

“There is no other culture that celebrates weddings like the Indians do! There are millions of wedding events take place in this market annually. This sector has experienced a tremendous growth as almost everyone desires to elevate the scale of their special celebration. Here, Malaysia offers a huge potential as a wedding destination. As the tagline rightly states, “Love in India, Marry in Malaysia”, the wedding conclave showcases Malaysia as a perfect wedding destination with many magnificent hotels and resorts. Being in the heart of ASEAN brings many advantages to Malaysia. It is a melting pot of cultures brought in from the colonial era. These foreign cultures have been accepted and adopted by the local people. Elements from these rich cultures can be incorporated in an Indian wedding in Malaysia to make the celebration even more exciting,” said H.E. Dato’ Hidayat Abdul Hamid.

He added, “Malaysia is a value-for-money destination. For example, the Langkawi Island – a duty-free island, offers cheaper rates of beverages compared with the mainland. At the same time, the room rates are quite affordable in the island. Besides, there are plenty of beautiful venues with state-of-the-art facilities that can make the wedding a memorable experience. Gorgeous beaches, cities, highland and million-year-old rainforests can lend a perfect backdrop to your big-day. Being a multi-ethnic society, a couple can even get married in traditional costumes of the Kadazan, Iban, Malays, etc.”

“This indeed gives us immense pleasure and honour to work with Tourism Malaysia in organising this event and to promote Malaysia as the perfect wedding destination. This country indeed offers all the ingredients we vie for in a Big Fat Indian Wedding. Laced with scenic beauty, the airfares, travel time, visa charges waiver, competitive prices of hotels and resorts, all these factors position Malaysia as the desirable wedding destination. We hope that this initiative will definitely increase the number of Indian weddings in Malaysia,” said Rajnish Rathi.

Currently, a total of 237 flights connect 14 cities directly in India, offering approximately 45,000 seats per week to Malaysia. The number will be even higher if it does include indirect flights. Ease of connectivity is the key for both countries. Being less than five-hour away from New Delhi, the time and cost involved will not be an issue given that the government has eased the visa facility for Indian travellers with the introduction of eNTRI and eVISA.

Malaysia promoted as destination for Indian weddings

NEW DELHI, May 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is a well-known honeymoon destination for Indian couples, but the country's tourism infrastructure makes it an attractive place for weddings as well, tour operators say.

Destination wedding is a romantic idea for many wealthy Indians, with celebrities setting the trend.

Tourism Malaysia recently invited a group of tour operators from India to familiarise them with the Southeast Asian nation’s major locations for hosting big, fat Indian weddings.

"Malaysia can be the next big destination, which we as wedding planners would like to promote because of the connectivity and the unique locations it has," said Manoj Kheria, co-founder of Letz Get Wed.

"It has all the elements required for a big, fat Indian wedding from grand ballrooms to sandy beaches. Malaysia has something for everyone," he added.

Cultural factors can also encourage Indian couples to hold their weddings in Malaysia as the paraphernalia for wedding rituals and various props can be easily assembled.

"The country is a vibrant melting pot of cultures and heritage. A destination wedding in Malaysia offers a beautiful mix of culture, cuisine and various contrasts," said Rahul Patni of Grand Affairs Pvt Ltd.

The ease of travel to Malaysia is enhanced by daily flights from major Indian cities, including Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.

According to Rahul, Kuala Lumpur is one of the top options for wedding planners because the city offers great hotels, shopping and entertainment activities to keep a wedding party busy.

"Malaysia is one of the hottest upcoming destinations for weddings," he said.

The tour operators visited hotels and resorts in Langkawi, Port Dickson and Kuala Lumpur as part of their trip held in association with AirAsia.

Langkawi Island has already witnessed Indian weddings.

"The visiting group also got an opportunity to meet a few Malaysian wedding planners in Kuala Lumpur to assist them in future wedding arrangements in Malaysia," said Sulaiman Suip, director of Tourism Malaysia in New Delhi.

It is estimated that 10 million weddings are organised in India each year.

These garner business worth billions of dollars in sectors such as hotels, catering, match-making services and jewellery.

India ranks among Malaysia's top 10 tourist source markets, with 600,311 Indian tourists visiting the country in 2018.

Desaru Coast aims big for international wedding tourism

https://desarucoast.com/

KOTA TINGGI , May 19 (Bernama) -- Desaru Development Holdings Sdn Bhd -- the master developer of Desaru Coast Resort here plans to promote the integrated resort as a preferred wedding choice for international tourists.

Its chief executive officer Roslina Arbak said Desaru Coast has its own distinct attraction to offer newly wed couples, including the advantage of owning a world-renowned chain of hotels and resorts, convention centres, a theme water park, golf course and a beautiful coastline as well to complete the package.

“Several months ago, I participated in a road show in India and they showed keen interest on our wedding packages (in Desaru), for family vacations and also to conduct business.

“So India could potentially be one of our (Desaru Coast) biggest market for weddings,” she told Bernama after officiating the opening of the ‘Desaru Coast Gourmet Series; Malaysian Journey Farm To Table’, which was also attended by Australian executive chef Christopher James Miller, here recently.

Roslina, however, said while much attention is being given to the foreign market, the domestic scene was still firmly in sight as it also plays a vital role in terms of revenue.

“The (domestic) market is very important to us. Even during off season, locals are constantly heading here for conventions, meetings, training and so on,” she said.

Branding Malaysia As A Wedding & Honeymoon Destination

http://ebrochures.malaysia.travel/

PUTRAJAYA, 23 MAY 2018: The recent global attention on the Royal Wedding of the Year between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle goes to show just how big the wedding and honeymoon business is.

Big weddings are not just for the British royals, though, and Malaysia is keenly aware of the great potential the industry can bring to its tourism business especially from markets such as India where it is estimated that more than 10 million weddings are organised each year.

Tapping into this market, which is said to be a recession-proof industry, estimated to be around $40-50 billion in size, is one of Tourism Malaysia’s strategy to boost its tourism revenue. Recently, Tourism Malaysia invited six of India’s top wedding planners from Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi to see what Malaysia could offer as a wedding destination for their clients. Also invited were a wedding magazine journalist and a wedding photographer.

Their trip here included hotel and site inspections in Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh to see the variety of accommodation options, facilities and services offered as well as nearby tourist attractions. The group also learned about customs regulations and were introduced to Malaysian wedding planners, florists and caterers. They also had the opportunity to speak with several government agencies namely the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Customs Department, Malaysian Immigrations Department and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), as well as Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.

They also met with the Tourism Malaysia Director General, Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab and shared viewpoints on Malaysia’s potential as a wedding and honeymoon destination.

Further initiatives by Tourism Malaysia to continue such efforts of promoting the country as a wedding and honeymoon destination include the publication of promotional materials for the India market, B2B roadshows with Air Asia in Indore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Delhi, Raipur and Amritsar, as well as additional familiarization trips.

Potential in beach and park weddings

MALACCA: A city councillor here has mooted the idea of wedding receptions and marriages at pristine beaches and beautiful parks of Malacca as a new tourism product.

Malacca Historic City Council member Ronald Gan said the National Registration Department (NRD) was willing to allow its officers to register marriages at beaches or parks, provided the families of both the groom and bride pay a fee for the outdoor service. He said the families would also have to make transport arrangements for the NRD officer.

“I came to know about this service last week when making wedding arrangements for a good friend,” he said after meeting state NRDdirector Mohd Sharil Neoh Abdullah at his office here yesterday. “Based on this service provided by the NRD, I have drafted a proposal to turn outdoor weddings into a tourism product,” he said, adding that local councils in Australia and the United States also promoted outdoor wedding packages.

“We have beautiful beaches and parks, especially the botanical garden in Ayer Keroh, for such ceremonies,” he said. Gan would meet wedding planners in the state to get their views. “Such wedding packages can complement Malacca’s status as a green technology state and a popular holiday destination,” he said.

Gan said that he had listed out to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam the salient points of the proposal and how it could generate revenue. “I will follow up with a more comprehensive proposal by including the input from the wedding planners,” he said.
