Business events deliver RM1.91bil boost to Penang economy in 2025

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's business events sector generated an estimated RM1.91 billion in economic impact in 2025, underscoring its growing role as a key pillar of the state's tourism and services economy amid global uncertainties.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the strong performance reflected the sector's continued expansion, with the state hosting 3,391 business events last year, attracting more than 450,000 delegates and generating over 800,000 hotel room nights.

"Altogether, this brought about RM1.91 billion in economic impact to our state," he said at the launch of the BE (Business Event) Associate programme here today.

Chow said the figures went beyond statistics, translating into tangible benefits for the local economy.

"Behind these numbers are real outcomes — more jobs, more business for local companies and more activity across the whole ecosystem, from hotels to small businesses.

"When business events grow, the economy grows together," he added.

Chow acknowledged that the global tourism sector was facing challenges, with geopolitical tensions making travellers more cautious and leading some to delay trips or opt for closer destinations.

"This is why business events are important. People travel with a clear purpose (either) for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

"Many will stay a bit longer, bring their families, and spend more time here.

"This helps sustain tourism activity during uncertain periods," he added.

Chow also called for stronger momentum towards Visit Malaysia Year 2026, stressing the need for close coordination between federal and state authorities to maximise tourism benefits.

"The state government will continue to do our part to promote Penang. At the same time, strong coordination, consistent promotion and timely support measures will be needed to help cushion the impact of global uncertainties," he said.

Penang's distinctive mix of modern development and Asian heritage, along with its well-established hospitality sector, has made it a popular MICE destination.

Chow said Penang could not afford to be complacent in talent development amid rapidly changing job demands.

"We cannot take our time when it comes to talent development. We need to move faster. Job demands are changing quickly, and our young people must be ready to keep up," he said.

He also encouraged a shift in mindset towards adaptability and multi-skilled learning.

"In the past, people always said it is not good to be a 'jack of all trades'. But today, we need to look at this differently.

"Being able to do many things, to learn new skills and to adapt, this is an advantage," he said.

Chow said the BE Associate programme is the first of its kind in Malaysia and a timely initiative to strengthen youth readiness for industry needs.

Sarawak to host South-east Asian tourist guides conference in Sibu

Sarawak will stage the 3rd Southeast Asian Tourist Guides Conference from October 13 to 15, 2026, at the Kingwood Hotel in Sibu, bringing together around 1,000 delegates from across the region.

The event follows the inaugural conference held in Kuching in 2024 and forms part of activities linked to Visit Malaysia Year 2026. It is organised by the Sarawak Tourist Guides Association in collaboration with the Malaysian Tourist Guides Council and supported by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

The conference will focus on challenges facing the tourist guiding profession, including the impact of digital tools, changing visitor expectations and a shortage of qualified guides. It also aims to strengthen regional cooperation among tourism professionals in South-east Asia.

Under Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, the state is targeting annual visitor growth of 7.5 per cent through 2030. Tourism authorities have identified the role of tourist guides as central to delivering visitor experiences and supporting sustainable tourism development.

The conference programme will include professional development sessions and outdoor learning activities, including a cultural exchange component focused on community-based tourism. Organisers said this is intended to support skills development and promote understanding of cultural preservation among guides.

Sibu has been selected as the host city to support tourism development beyond major urban centres and to distribute the economic impact of business events more widely across Sarawak.

Snowdan Lawan, deputy minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, commented: “Tourist guides are storytellers, cultural ambassadors, and the frontline of how our destination is understood and remembered.

“Sustaining this growth requires a highly skilled, future-ready tourism workforce. That is why we are positioning this conference as a dedicated platform for learning and professional development, while accelerating the training of new Registered Regional Specific Tourist Guides and Sarawak Park Guides to build a strong, resilient talent pipeline for the future.”

Edwin Lim, honorary chairman of the Sarawak Tourist Guides Association, said: “The role of a tourist guide is becoming more demanding in a fast-changing, digital world. This conference focuses on strengthening regional networks and building meaningful collaborations to elevate the profession.”

“Business events today must deliver more than attendance. They must deliver impact. Through this conference, we are strengthening legacy outcomes and advancing a high-value tourism economy while positioning Sarawak as the legacy capital of business events in Malaysia and Borneo,” added Jason Tan Chin Foo, acting CEO of BESarawak.

Country Heights to reposition iconic Palace of the Golden Horses

KUALA LUMPUR: Country Heights Holdings Bhd (CHHB) is gearing up to reposition the Palace of the Golden Horses, a landmark 400-room hotel in Mines Resort City, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, as part of its comprehensive long-term strategic plan.

The luxury hotel remains a cornerstone asset for CHHB, strategically connected to the Mines International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC) and the surrounding precinct. Overlooking the scenic Mines Lake, the property anchors the area as a premier leisure, events, and lifestyle hub. Its signature features, including a golden chariot entrance and meticulously designed interiors, have made it one of Malaysia's most iconic and visually distinctive hotels, attracting both local and international visitors.

Originally developed in the 1990s on the site of the former Sungei Besi Mine, the Palace of the Golden Horses was part of a larger initiative that included the Mines Wellness Hotel, The Mines Shopping Mall, and MIECC, aimed at boosting tourism, recreation, and business events. In 2020, the hotel temporarily closed for a major refurbishment and reopened in 2021 with upgraded facilities. Notably, the hotel remained operational throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, continuing to serve medical tourists, while traditional Chinese medicine offerings saw particularly strong demand during that period.

CHHB founder and advisor Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew said the repositioning of the Palace of the Golden Horses forms part of a broader strategic vision, which also encompasses the exploration of Web 3.0–enabled platforms, the enhancement of GHHS Healthcare's preventive and wellness services, and the introduction of curated, membership-based experiences at the hotel.

"These initiatives are designed to enhance engagement, build sustainable communities, and unlock new value streams across healthcare, hospitality, and lifestyle segments, while remaining aligned with regulatory requirements and the company's core focus on asset integrity, governance, and long-term shareholder value," he said in a statement recently.

On the financial front, CHHB is intensifying efforts to recover outstanding debts, with rental arrears from certain tenants totalling about RM15 million. Legal action is being pursued where necessary to safeguard revenue and optimise asset performance.

Lee emphasised that while the company continues to resolve legacy matters, it remains focused on executing its long-term strategic initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth, innovation, and value creation across its diverse portfolio.

KUANTAN: The state government, for the first time, will host tourism roadshows at two major cities in India this week to attract more travellers from the country to the east coast state.

The roadshows, which would showcase Pahang's rich cultural heritage, pristine rainforests and diverse attractions, will be held in New Delhi tomorrow and in Chennai on Sept 26.

"We want to position Pahang as a must-visit destination for Indian travellers in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, while reinforcing the state's image as 'The Heart of Malaysia'," she said in a statement today.

Leong said the initiative went beyond promoting tourism, as it would also help build connectivity, strengthen cooperation and share Pahang's unique stories with the people of India.

She said that the programme would also highlight the state as a preferred destination for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), weddings and honeymoons, sporting events and niche tourism tailored to specific interests.

Iconic tourist attractions to be showcased included Fraser's Hill, Genting Highlands and Cameron Highlands as highland retreats; Cherating and Pulau Tioman as exotic beach destinations; Taman Negara National Park, one of the world's oldest rainforests; and the newly introduced rail tourism.
