Tourism Malaysia - Visit Malaysia Year Campaign

Malaysia welcomes almost 25 million tourists annually, and for good reason – our colourful, multi-cultural and multi-religious nation is a multi-faceted gem that sparks as much interest with her quiet graces and natural attractions as her wild, thrilling ones. Visit Malaysia Year is a campaign event held from time to time to highlight the best of what Malaysia has to offer as a leading tourist destination in Asia.

Visit Malaysia Year 1990 - "To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia" and 7.4 million in tourist arrivals.

With that unforgettable song, Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) was first launched in 1990 with the theme "Fascinating Malaysia. Year of Festivals". The campaign was a huge success with Malaysia charting 7.4 million in tourist arrivals compared to 4.8 million in 1989. To enable tourists to easily recognize Malaysia, an orang utan, being an endangered species found in East Malaysia, was used as a mascot and it was named Wira. Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur’s famous landmark, the Sultan Abdul Samad building, was featured as the official logo of VMY 1990. Malaysia’s Independence Day celebrated on August 31 of that year was the anchor for 84 major events, 14 festivals, and nine vibrant exhibitions.

Visit Malaysia Year 1994 - "Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More" and 10.22 million in tourist arrivals.

The success of VMY 1990 spurred another VMY in 1994. This time around, the theme was "Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More". VMY 1994 maintained the words "Fascinating Malaysia" for its theme but injected an additional punchline "Naturally More", to reflect more exciting events lined up for that year.

Visit Malaysia Year 2007 - "Malaysia Truly Asia" and 20.97 million in tourist arrivals

The third VMY was launched in 2007 in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia’s 50th Year of Independence. Hence, the theme "Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood" was befitting to reflect this important anniversary celebration. Efforts were also intensified in all advertising and promotional activities, including the call for action "The time is now. The place is Malaysia" together with its simple yet impactful slogan "Malaysia Truly Asia". In line with the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia’s Independence, over 200 events were held across the country with 50 major events showcasing Malaysia’s wealth of tourism attractions. All in all, VMY 2007 charted tremendous success beyond expectations, recording 20.97 million in tourist arrivals and RM46.1 billion in tourist receipts, an increase of 3.42 million and RM9.8 billion from the previous year respectively.

Visit Malaysia Year 2014 - "Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia" and more than 28 million in tourist arrivals

In 2014, Malaysia celebrated its fourth Visit Malaysia Year with the theme "Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia" to reflect the diversity and the unity of the Malaysian society. The Proboscis Monkey was chosen as the mascot for VMY 2014, while the promotional campaign began early in 2013 with a series of special events and activities, leading to VMY 2014.

Visit Malaysia Year 2020 – “Visit Truly Asia Malaysia”

The year 2020 holds a special place in the heart of Malaysians, with VMY 2020 set to become a festive year-long event. This fifth Visit Malaysia year since 1990 will be held with renewed vigour and passion as we celebrate the successes and challenges we have experienced together as a nation. With the chosen theme ‘Visit Truly Asia Malaysia’, a myriad of exciting and lively events has been lined-up to bring to light all of Malaysia’s bountiful offerings in terms of art, culture, cuisine, history, natural beauty and others.

Fantastic Podium For Quartararo At Dutch GP

PETRONAS Yamaha SRT take best overall result of 2019 season to date, with 3rd for Fabio Quartararo and the 5th for Franco Morbidelli.

PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team had a superb Dutch GP, with rookie Fabio Quartararo achieving his second consecutive podium finish and Franco Morbidelli taking the chequered flag in fifth. It is the best combined result for the team, and comes on the debut weekend with PETRONAS Sprinta engine oil in the team’s Yamaha YZR-M1 bikes.

Quartararo, who started from pole position, made a great start, allowing him to lead a MotoGP race for the first time. He headed the field for 12 laps, and didn’t relinquish the lead without a fight. The Frenchman maintained consistent race pace to finish the Dutch GP in third position, giving him sixth in the overall standings with 67 points. He is also currently the Top Independent Rider.

Morbidelli made excellent progress during the race. The Italian, who started from the third row of the grid, made a great fight up the order, and after an intense battle on the final laps and a clever overtaking move on the final chicane, claimed fifth place. Morbidelli is now 12th in the World Championship with 45 points.

The next challenge for the pair will be the German GP, which will be held from July 5th to 7th at Sachsenring.

Fabio Quartararo Achieves First Ever Podium For PETRONAS YAMAHA SRT

PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team claimed a remarkable first podium in only its seventh MotoGP after a fabulous performance from Fabio Quartararo in the Catalan GP. Quartararo made his debut appearance on the premier class rostrum with a sensational second place at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, just twelve days after surgery on his right forearm to alleviate arm pump. Team-mate Franco Morbidelli was running in the top ten when he crashed out of the race with eight laps remaining.

Quartararo, who started from pole, dropped seven positions at the start but was soon to work back up the order. The French rider showed his great race pace and composure to regain the lost ground and prevail in a thrilling battle for second place. The 20-year-old claimed his first podium in MotoGP in only his – and the team’s – seventh race in the class, and is now 7th in the overall standings with 51 points.

Morbidelli was forced to retire from the Catalan GP when he low-sided at Turn 7 with eight laps remaining. He had been aiming for his fourth top ten finish of the year. He escaped unhurt from the fall, and is 12th in the World Championship with 34 points.

PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team, Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli will be back in action tomorrow at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit for a test day to prepare the Dutch GP, which takes place in Assen on June 28th-30th.

PETRONAS SEPANG RACING TEAM Unveils New Look For Historic Season

28 January 2019

The PETRONAS Sepang Racing Team this afternoon presented their ambitious project for 2019 at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, unveiling the stunning new colour scheme that will adorn the team’s five riders and their machines across the three categories of the MotoGP World Championship this year. The new PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team riders in MotoGP – Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo – and their 2019 Yamaha YZR-M1 machines lined up alongside PETRONAS Sprinta Racing riders Khairul Idham Pawi (Moto2), Ayumu Sasaki and John McPhee (Moto3) were the stars of the ceremony. This historic moment in Malaysian motorsport took place in the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS Foyer.

This special occasion also served as a statement of intent from the team, who for the first time ever in Southeast Asia will have a presence in all three categories of Grand Prix motorcycle racing – MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. Indeed, it was an unforgettable day for the whole of the PETRONAS Sepang Racing Team and the country in general – demonstrated by the presence of some of Malaysia’s dignitaries – as well as the many partners who have made this dream a reality.

The headline news of the event was the official unveiling of the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team line-up in MotoGP, which will feature 2018 Rookie of the Year Franco Morbidelli and the man who will look to relieve him of the title, Fabio Quartararo, who makes the step up from Moto2. The team will be Yamaha’s only satellite representation on the grid, receiving top level material and factory support thanks to the magnificent working relationship between the team and Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd.

In the intermediate category, the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing outfit heads into its second season with a new face on board – Malaysia’s two-time Grand Prix winner Khairul Idham Pawi. Meanwhile in Moto3, Ayumu Sasaki welcomes a new team-mate in John McPhee, forming a new pairing ready to fight for the positions of honour at the front of the pack.

The first track appearance for the new-look PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team will take place from 6th – 8th February at the first Official MotoGP Test of 2019 in the Sepang International Circuit. Later, from the 11th-13th February, the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto2 and Moto3 teams will take part in a private test at the same track.

Podium for Oliveira at Thai GP

10/07/2018 - Chang International Circuit, Thailand

The flyaway rounds of the Moto2 World Championship started off with a podium for Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Miguel Oliveira. In the Thai GP, the Portuguese crossed the finish line in third place, followed by teammate Brad Binder in fourth. Both maintain their second and third positions in the overall standings, as well as Red Bull KTM Ajo continuing to lead the team standings with a 25-point advantage.

The 24-lap contest was very demanding, both physically for the riders and technically for their bikes. Taking off from the second and third rows, respectively, Oliveira and Binder made good starts, gaining two positions each on the first lap. Both escaped with Pecco Bagnaia in the front group, with the Portuguese leading the way until the twelfth lap.

From that moment on, the Red Bull KTM Ajo riders rode together in second and third position until 3 laps remained. The duo would then concede another spot to a rival rider, eventually placing third and fourth.

After the Thai GP, Oliveira is second in the overall standings -28 points behind the leader with 100 still in play. 74 points off the Portuguese is Brad Binder, who remains in third place.

The next round of the Moto2 World Championship will take place in two weeks' time at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan.

Second consecutive podium for Miguel Oliveira

04/22/2018 - Circuit Of The Americas, Austin, USA
Miguel Oliveira was able to place on the podium at the Circuit Of The Americas, one of the few tracks on the calendar where he had not been on the rostrum before, on Sunday. Coming through from the fourth row of the grid, the Portuguese worked his way up the order lap after lap, to finally finish in a magnificent third position. Brad Binder gained ten places to match his best result of the season so far: Sixth place.

Starting from the fourth and sixth rows, Oliveira and Binder did not have an easy task ahead. However, both got off the line well, completing the first lap in eighth and ninth place, respectively. From there, the Portuguese began to push and gain places as the laps went by. A key moment in his race came with 8 laps remaining, when he was able to get into third place and start a final charge. Despite escaping and cutting the gap to the rider in second place, he would finish just over 1 second behind, in third.

Binder followed his teammate, until getting stuck in the fight for fourth place with four other riders. The South African would only lose out on fifth position after being passed on the final sector.
After the first three races of the season, the Moto2 World Championship now heads to Europe. Miguel Oliveira will come into the Red Bull Spanish GP at Jerez -on May 6th- in fourth place overall with 43 points, while Brad Binder is eighth with 20 points.

Aki Ajo - Team Manager
"We should be very happy with the results of the Moto2 race in Austin today, and even more so after the qualifying session yesterday –which didn’t go as expected after a good Friday of Free Practice sessions. Racing is like that sometimes, so of course we need to analyse what happened on Saturday in depth. Today I am very proud of the team and our riders. I thank them for the work done throughout the entire weekend."

Oliveira and Binder head to Austin to attend to unfinished business

04/18/2018 - Circuit of The Americas, USA
For the third consecutive year, the Circuit Of The Americas in Austin will be the venue for the only Moto2 round held in the United States. It is a Grand Prix to which the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 riders arrive with very different dynamics: Miguel Oliveira having taken his first podium of the season and Brad Binder getting a DNF in Argentina.

There are few circuits on this year’s calendar where Miguel Oliveira has not placed on the podium, and Austin is one of them. This is a challenge that the Portuguese wants to overcome this weekend.

The podium he achieved two weeks ago in Argentina, after fighting for the victory throughout the race, will serve as additional motivation. Last year, in his first experience of the track with the KTM, he claimed a commendable sixth place.

Brad Binder was on the rostrum at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas in 2016, a year in which he was proclaimed Moto3 World Champion. However, the South African could not take part in last year’s event due to an injury to his left arm. This will be the first time that Binder rides with a Moto2 bike at the circuit, but he is nevertheless aiming high this weekend.

The third round of the season will be the last before a run of European events. The Moto2 race will start at 12:20am local time –7:20pm CET– on Sunday, and will consist of 18 laps.

44 MIGUEL OLIVEIRA
"Honestly, the podium we achieved in Argentina gives us a little more peace of mind to face this third round. In any case, the Circuit Of The Americas is a very tricky circuit, with many changes of direction. We have to take advantage of all the track time we have available. Last year we didn’t have our best weekend, but even so we finished sixth, so we will at least try to improve on that result on Sunday. With the experience we have from last year, we will try to do our best."
41 BRAD BINDER
"I can’t wait for another Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas. It will be my first time on this track with a Moto2 bike, due to my injury last year, but I'm anxious to start riding there and learning the new track lines. I have been looking at practices and races from previous years to see the way to go and be as prepared as possible before we go to the track. I hope this helps me to adapt as quickly as possible and feel comfortable. It's already the third round of the year and I'm not completely satisfied with how things have gone so far, so I want to get better results from this weekend."

Oliveira and Binder take fifth and sixth in Qatar

03/18/2018 - Losail International Circuit, Qatar
The 20-lap first Moto2 race of the year, held at the Losail International Circuit, saw plenty of excitement to kick off the season. The Red Bull KTM Ajo riders both performed well after a difficult start: Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder rode alongside one another for the entirety of the contest, crossing the line in fifth and sixth position, respectively.
The start of the race was one of contrasts for the two Red Bull KTM Ajo stars. On the one hand, Oliveira was clipped by another rider on the opening corner, dropping from fourth to eighth on the first sector. Binder slotted in behind his teammate, having gained four places in the early going.
From that moment, the two were part of a group of five riders involved in the fight for fourth place. After several changes of positions, with five laps to go Oliveira was in fifth, followed by Binder, and they held these places through to the chequered flag.
The second round of the season, which takes place from April 6th-8th, will be the Argentinian GP. Last year, Red Bull KTM Ajo achieved their first podium and pole position there through Miguel Oliveira.

Aki Ajo - Team Manager
"It hasn't been a bad start to the Moto2 season. We can't be dissatisfied with the results in Moto2. With the end to last season that we had, we were all expecting some very good results early on this year for our riders. Finishing fifth and sixth is something we have to be happy about; it's a good start to build on for the coming races. We have to improve our rear grip, as the riders are sliding a lot. We need to analyse what is happening, be positive and look forward."

Tourism Malaysia amasses deeper marketing war chest

Tourism Malaysia will get a bigger budget this year to support the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign, which will see a string of promotional activities beginning this year.

While Tourism Malaysia’s director-general Mirza Mohammad Taiyab is keeping mum on the budget figure, he told TTG Asia at ATF 2018 that the amount would be bigger than previous years’, and there would be more money to spend on raising Malaysia’s visibility as a tourist destination in the lead up to the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign.

The year-long campaign is expected to boost tourist arrivals to 36 million and tourist receipts to RM168 billion (US$42.6 billion).

For a start, campaign details will be communicated to travel trade players at ATF 2018, and again at ITB Berlin in March.

Mirza said: “The build-up towards Visit Malaysia Year 2020 starts from this year as we want the country’s visibility to improve.”

He added that Malaysia’s hosting of PATA Travel Mart later this year in Langkawi will “present us with (another) platform to promote Malaysia and Visit Malaysia Year 2020 to the world.”

Malaysia's Participation In WTM London To Strengthen UK And Europe Market

LONDON, 9 November 2017 – Malaysia took part in London’s World Travel Market (WTM) 2017 from 6 to 8 November with a 130-strong delegation led by the Minister of Tourism and Culture, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz.

It marked the country’s 34th year of participation in the premier travel and tourism trade exhibition since 1983, a gesture of Malaysia’s dedication to strengthening the UK and Europe markets.

YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri addressed the UK and Europe media saying, “This year’s WTM participation is particularly special as we are making early preparations for the Visit Malaysia Year 2020. The WTM platform provides us the opportunity to leverage on this campaign to gain the confidence and partnership from industry players here.”

He spoke of the marketing campaigns to brand Malaysia in the region and assured of Malaysia’s intention to enhance accessibility from the UK and Europe markets through collaborations with airline carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

He went on to update the media of Malaysia’s tourism industry developments which included the completion of the Mass Rapid Transit system, which would essentially open up more urban and sub-urban destinations as potential tourist attractions; as well as new tourist attractions in Penang, Melaka and Langkawi.

The Minister said, “All these developments are timely in the run-up to our Visit Malaysia Year campaign in 2020 – a significant year in which Malaysia hopes to attract 36 million tourists worldwide. These developments also signify our genuine interest to grow and promote Malaysia as a top tourist destination and give assurance to industry players here of our commitment to tourism growth.”

“We hope that an early start for the preparation of the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 will enable us to forge quality partnerships with the industry players here,” he added.

This year, Malaysia’s participation in WTM totaled 130 delegates from 41 organisations. They comprised of representatives from both public and private sectors, namely 16 tour operators, 10 hotels and resorts, 3 associations/product owners/airlines and 12 state tourism agencies, including Tourism Malaysia itself as the destination promotion body of the Ministry.

The Malaysia Truly Asia brand remains the global branding of the country, perfectly encapsulating Malaysia’s cultural diversity; delicious cuisine; natural assets such as the rainforests, highlands, islands, beaches, rivers and lakes; modern cities; and rich and fulfilling experiences that appeal to this market.

With the favourable currency exchange rate, Malaysia offers more value for money with amazing hotels, delicious food, and other holiday lifestyle experiences that are reasonably-priced.

Last year, Malaysia recorded a total of 26.8 million tourist arrivals and RM82.1 billion tourist receipts. Of this, 400,269 tourists were from the UK market.

According to top tour operator Kuoni in its Worldwide Trends Report 2017, Malaysia rose to 10th place (from 14th place in 2016) in the list of most-preferred long-haul holiday destination for UK travelers.
