Memulihara warisan KL

Pelaburan strategik

StarCruises, Dream Cruises relaunch with maiden voyage of Star Voyager

Star Voyager, the latest ship to homeport in Singapore, embarked on its maiden voyage on March 26, heralding the revival of the StarCruises and Dream Cruises brands, and a new chapter for the former Star Cruises, a brand with over 30 years of history in the region.

The vessel, with a capacity of 1,940 passengers, will offer a new cruising experience tailored for the Asian market, travelling to Malacca and Jakarta before returning to Singapore.

Positioned as an affordable, lifestyle-driven cruise experience, StarCruises will operate mid-sized ships, including the Star Voyager and Star Navigator, catering to travellers seeking comfort, entertainment, and adventure at sea.

Dream Cruises offers a more luxurious experience with exclusive privileges and premium amenities on larger ships, including its flagship, Genting Dream, which accommodates over 3,000 guests.

“By clearly differentiating between StarCruises and Dream Cruises, we are able to cater to distinct segments while reinforcing our leadership in the Asian cruise industry and beyond,” said Michael Goh, president, StarCruises and Dream Cruises. “This is an exciting milestone for StarCruises and we are honoured to play a key role in supporting and contributing towards the growth of Singapore’s inbound and outbound cruise travel.”

The Star Voyager will offer three-, four- and five-night cruises connecting Singapore to dual homeport cities of Jakarta, Malacca, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City – further increasing inbound tourists to these destinations – as well as to other destinations such as Medan, Koh Samui, and Redang island.

A total of US$50 million was invested in refurbishing areas such as the lobby, restaurants, and Palace class suites. The entertainment programme and activities were also carefully planned to cater to multigenerational travellers, including a teens club with activities designed by the ship’s youngest crew to appeal to teenagers.

“We are strong believers in providing good experiences,” said Goh, adding that happy customers make for the strongest ambassadors of the brand.

Colin Kerr, senior vice-president of Cruise Entertainment, echoed this sentiment, noting that some guests are so invested in the product that their feedback has been taken into consideration.

The MICE segment, which contributes to 30 per cent of the business, is also another segment the company plans to continue growing.

StarCruises has plans to offer fly-cruise options to Australia and is exploring the Indian market as well.

Star Voyager will homeport at the Singapore Cruise Centre until July 21.

Ab Rauf berkata, sejak Januari lalu, Melaka menerima seramai 5.7 juta pelancong, lonjakan sebanyak 30 peratus susulan sambutan TMM 2024 berbanding tempoh sama tahun sebelumnya.

Think City to boost cultural tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's northern region is rich in history and has the potential to grow into a sustainable cultural destination.

Think City Sdn Bhd managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed said Malaysia sits at the confluence of history and geography, as evidenced by the oldest prehistoric settlement in the world after Africa, signifying two million years of human evolution.

"In addition, the archaeological sites of Lembah Bujang and Sungai Batu highlight evidence of the earliest human settlement in Southeast Asia.

"This promises great potential for Malaysia to be enhanced as an international archaeological heritage destination.

"The possibility of new discoveries and opportunities to showcase this historic site will give initial focus to Lenggong, Kuala Kangsar and Taiping," he said during an interview with the New Straits Times and Harian Metro recently.

Think City is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

On April 11, Think City announced that it had allocated RM10 million to support culture-based economic development in the northern Malaysia region, collaborating with the Finance Ministry as part of the Budget 2022 initiative.

Hamdan said Think City has identified potential nodes in the northern region to enhance culture-based experiences and will support grantees who can deepen and diversify visitors' journeys and broaden the public's understanding of the region's cultural significance via the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants Programme.

Under the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants Programme, culture-based economic development would leverage Malaysia's archaeological heritage by regenerating socio-economic growth and boosting the community's cultural, economic and social capital development.

The programme aimed to achieve its aspiration in capacity building and advocacy, demonstration, and content creation.

Think City is an impact organisation established in 2009 to create more sustainable and equitable places for the benefit of all.

The company's knowledge, skills and strategies focus on urban solutions, the environment, social communities, and the cultural economy.

Sarawak wants to tap potential of digital tourism

KUCHING, Sept 26 -- The Sarawak government is determined to tap into digital tourism as part of efforts to boost tourist arrivals in the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government is aware that digitalisation is a strong driver of globalisation and brings great potential for revenue growth.

“The state tourism industry especially will greatly benefit from such an initiative (digitalisation). We are all looking into various strategies in order to boost the tourism industry and one of them is to invest in digital tourism.

“We want to promote Sarawak as a must-visit destination, offering a memorable experience for a multitude of different types of visitors and encourage return visits. In short digital tourism is all about enhancing and improving traveller's experience and securing their interest,” he said in his speech at the International Conference on Archaeology 2019 here today.

His speech was read out by state Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abang Johari said digital tourism would also create opportunities for entrepreneurs to promote their goods and services to a broader audience and increase their business prospects.

While promoting tourism and upgrading some of the tourist destinations in the state are important, he stressed that the protection of world heritage sites in Sarawak is equally imperative to the state government.

“The state government has acknowledged that the Niah Caves and other identified archaeological sites across Sarawak are of great importance.

“This invaluable historical heritage tells us about past human activities and thus also reflects a nation's civilisation. Therefore, the protection and preservation of these heritage assets are a priority and Sarawak is committed to this,” he added.

Taiping Aerodrome to become a heritage site

the state’s heritage site. Pix by NSTP/Muhaizan Yahya

IPOH: The historic Taiping Aerodrome, where aviation legend Amelia Mary Earhart had a refuelling stopover in 1937 during her journey to circumnavigate the globe, is set to become the state’s heritage site.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the decision was made during the state exco meeting today, where the state government also urged the state Land and Mines Department to speed up the process.

Ahmad Faizal also dismissed claims that the Taiping Aerodrome had been sold to make way for housing development projects and reiterated that under the leadership of Pakatan Harapan, some parts of the land had been returned to the Menteri Besar Perak Incorporated (MB Inc).

“I would like to stress that Taiping Aerodrome has never been approved to be
developed. In fact, under my leadership, I have returned some part of the land to the MB Inc,” he said at a press conference after handing over RM3 million financial assistance to 261 partially-aided government schools in Perak at Dewan Serbaguna in Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here today.

It was earlier reported that Ahmad Faizal had cancelled an approval made by the previous state government administration on Jan 16 to hand over part of the Taiping Aerodrome to the private sector for development.

Commenting on the recent protest held by a group of people against the alleged development on Taiping Aerodrome, Ahmad Faizal advised heritage lovers to refer the relevant authorities before accusing the state government of selling the historical area.

“At the same time, I am happy to see the huge number of demonstrators because it shows that they care for our heritage. I echo their sentiments that the place needs to be preserved too, just how important our great-grandmother’s house is to our family.

“The place needs to be spruced up and the grass needs to be cut. The 200 protesters who came that day should have done their part in making the place nice again. I would be happy to join them if they had invited me,” he added.

On Friday, several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) staged a protest against the alleged development of the area, claiming that the land had been sold without considering the importance of its heritage and historical values.

The 16.1ha Taiping Aerodrome, built in Malaya by the British in early 1929, is reputedly the first airport in Southeast Asia.

The aerodrome gained worldwide recognition when the American pioneer aviator Earhart made a refuelling stop there on June 7, 1937 before continuing her journey to Singapore and New Guinea in her bid to fly around the world.

The then-Indonesian president Sukarno and his deputy, Mohammad Hatta had also landed at the Taiping Aerodrome on Aug 12, 1945 to discuss the future of Malaya and Indonesia before heading for Tokyo.

On a separate note, Ahmad Faizal said as part of the state’s commitment to protect its historical heritage, plans are afoot to upgrade Taiping Lake Garden and Bukit Larut or better known as Maxwell Hill, both to be recognised as Taman Tasik Diraja.

“The matter was also discussed during state exco meeting today. I have received a lot of suggestions from our young leaders, DAPSY, Armada, PKR, Amanah and Bersatu. They suggested that the two main attractions in Taiping to be known as Taman Tasik Diraja.

“This is very interesting. With this understanding, we don’t have to worry about plans for developments near this area. This is also in line with Taiping being recognised as one of the most sustainable cities in the world,” he said.

Ahmad Faizal said he would seek the consent from the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah before naming Taiping Lake Garden and Bukit Larut as Taman Tasik Diraja.

The Taiping Lake Gardens, established in 1880 during the British rule, is one of the oldest public gardens.

Penang among best places in Asia to visit

George Town, the island's main city, makes for an ideal home base, thanks to a dynamic cityscape that's punctuated by British colonial architecture, Buddhist temples
and ornate Chinese manor houses.Pix from Pixabay

GEORGE TOWN: CNN Travel, CNN International’s new travel website, has named Penang as one of 17 Asia's best destinations to consider for the next adventure.

The article, published yesterday, singled out Penang as a mecca for food and architecture lovers. it was written by Kate Springer, a Hong Kong-based freelance writer and editor, with focus on travel, dining, culture and environmental reporting.

Her work has been published by CNN, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic, Vogue, Munchies, BBC Travel, Fodor’s, Time, HK Magazine, Sotheby’s, Tatler, Home Journal, Time Out Hong Kong, Revolution Magazine, Liv Magazine, Expat Parent Magazine, Horizon Magazine, Where, The List, Post Magazine, Superfuture, Fast Media and WBEZ (Chicago Public Media).

On Penang, Springer said: "Located off the western coast of Malaysia, the island of Penang is a mecca for food and architecture lovers.

"George Town, the island's main city, makes for an ideal home base, thanks to a dynamic cityscape that's punctuated by British colonial architecture, Buddhist temples and ornate Chinese manor houses.

"This seaside city is known as one of the world's top food destinations, serving up a delicious mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine.

"You'll crave dishes like Hokkien mee (fried prawn noodles), roti canai (an Indian-influenced flat bread dish with dal or curry) and Penang laksa for years after visiting."

Besides Penang, also named were Bhutan, El Nido in the Philippines, Bali in Indonesia, Seoul in South Korea, Rajasthan in India, Siem Reap in Cambodia, Hong Kong, Hanoi and Phu Quoc in Vietnam, The Great Wall and Xi'an in China, Chiang Rai in Thailand, Luang Prabang in Laos, Kathmandu in Nepal, Yogyakarta in Indonesia, Kyoto in Japan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has since taken to his official Facebook page to urge visitors to visit Penang for an unforgettable experience.

"It is a great honour for Penang. We need to ensure that we do not rest on our laurels.

"The state Tourism Committee chairman (Yeoh Soon Hin) is working very hard to transform this important economic sector so that we continue to be a destination of choice and provide job opportunities for our people," Chow said in an immediate WhatsApp response to the New Straits Times.

On July 13 last year, Bangkok-based CNN Travel senior producer Karla Cripps, in her article "George Town, Penang: Asia's greatest street food city?" wrote at length on Penang's street food culture and the state as an eater's paradise.

Finding ways to encourage tourists to visit historical places

JOHOR BAHRU, June 2 (Bernama) -- The Johor State Government will try to find ways to attract more foreign tourists to historical places like the state’s museum.

State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar who made the assurance said the approach was taken because such places are less exposed to tourists.

“… while overseas, people like to visit historical places but in Malaysia especially in Johor, it’s different.

“Tour guides are more likely to take tourists to shopping malls and theme parks despite knowing Johor is steeped in history and has a lot of historical places,” he said in an interview here recently.

“Therefore, there is need for more organised arrangements between the State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee and the State Tourism, Women Development, Family and Community Committee, whose chairman is Liow Cai Tung so that tourists are encouraged to visit these historical sites too.

“This is in line with the commitment of both parties to promote next year as ‘Visit Johor Year’.

“In doing this, we will also find ways to ensure economic gains in these tourism activities which can be enjoyed by the whole community.

“This is because in Yogyakarta (Indonesia) for example, I can see the economic spin-off from such attractions (visiting historic places) directed to the people around which allows them to sell clothings, become tour guides and so on. This is very different from the situation in Malaysia especially Johor,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on the ‘Visit Johor Year’, Mohd Khuzzan said various programmes have been organised to highlight the heritage and culture of the state including Johor Heritage Food Festival, Music and Folk Dance Festival.

Facilities for tourists at Niah Caves to be improved, developed

image: Sarawak Tourism

KUCHING: Facilities at the Niah Caves near Miri will be improved to develop it into a leading tourism attraction.

Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Niah has the potential to draw tourists, because of its historical significance.

"Human habitation at Niah was previously thought to date back 40,000 years from the utensils and turtle shells found there. But, the latest findings from New South Wales researchers indicate that humans had been staying there for 65,000 years.

"This will trigger a lot of interest when it comes to tourism, and it is something that we can showcase," he told reporters after chairing a Sarawak tourism steering committee meeting here on Wednesday (Apr 3).

"We want to make it easier to visit the Niah Caves. The project will be fast-tracked and we hope to see the infrastructure work starting within this year," he said.

Abdul Karim also said the ministry would continue to improve tourism infrastructure and products as part of the Visit Sarawak Campaign, which was launched last Dec 31.

He also said that efforts are being made to increase air connectivity to Sarawak.

"My ministry is actively engaging with local and several airlines from China to explore the possibilities of direct flights from China. We are also working hard to realise a direct flight between Kuching and Jakarta," he said.

MELAKA: The state government through the state's hotel industry, has introduced a variety of attractive accommodation packages in conjunction with Visit Melaka Year 2019 (VMY 2019) in efforts to increase tourist arrivals and extended stay.

Chief Minister Adly Zahari said in collaboration with the Melaka Budget Hotel Association, 14 budget hotels were offering amazing three-day, two- night accommodation packages from as low as RM159.

He said in collaboration with the Malaysian Melaka Hotel Association, the "Fascinating Melaka" packages offered visitors a variety of attractive accommodation packages at 10 three-star hotels in the state, with prices ranging between RM300 and RM458.

“Meanwhile, under ‘Love My Kampung' packages, in collaboration with the Melaka Homestay Association, nine lodging houses are offering two-day, one-night accommodation from RM79 to RM99 per pax.

“There are also 14 chalets and resorts on the coastal area around the state, to offer visitors the ‘Heritage and Nature Trail' packages from RM79 to RM99 per pax,” he said in his speech when launching the VMY 2019 at the Melaka Fiesta 2018 celebration here on Monday night.

At the event, Adly also launched the Tourism Event Calendar 2019 which featured a variety of interesting activities including Raptor Watch, Melaka Historical City celebration and San Pedro Festival, just to name a few.

Adly said the implementation of VMY 2019 was the state government's main mission to support Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

It also served as the main platform for Melaka to promote the historical state internationally as well as to realise its target of attracting 20 million tourists this year.

He said Melaka received 14.7 million tourists from January to October last year, with 5.6 million people or 38.59% comprising foreign tourists.

Despite the relatively high target set, Adly said he was confident the efforts would help elevate the state tourism industry to a higher level through all the plans formulated, including the ‘Melaka, the Gateway to Historic Malaysia' promotional campaign and several other new approaches.

He also encouraged everyone to provide continuous cooperation and support to the state government to ensure the success of VMY 2019 by applying the value of ‘Think Tourism and Act Tourism' to intensify efforts to promote Melaka as the country's main tourist destination.

Potential to enter Unesco heritage list

The Royal Belum rainforest is one of four sites in the tentative Unesco list. — filepic

ROYAL Belum in Gerik, Perak, is one of four sites in the tentative heritage list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
If the rainforest makes the cut, then it will be the second destination in Perak entering the Unesco list.

The Lenggong Valley, where the skeletal remains of early man called Perak man was discovered, is the first site recognised by Unesco.

State tourism committee chairman Tan Kar Hing said the National Heritage Department is expected to submit the dossier on the sites to Unesco after the state sends it in.

“We really need to work hard in terms of the forest and wildlife conservation efforts,” he told reporters after launching the Perak chapter of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) fair.

The other three sites on the tentative Unesco list are Taman Negara, the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge in Gombak and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia.

When announcing the matter recently, Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said declaring these places, which had historical and heritage value, as Unesco World Heritage Sites would protect their biodiversity and uniqueness.

Tan added that if Royal Belum was selected it would help promote the northern part of Perak further.

“Since Lenggong Archaeological Gallery is already there, visitors would be able to go a little further to Royal Belum.

“I recently also spoke to the Lenggong District Council president on developing Tasik Raban as a tourist destination.

“If we package it nicely, I am sure this part of Perak can be another great tourist destination,” he added.

Tan said with the Betong airport in Thailand expected to be completed by year 2020, more tourists could be expected from the neighbouring country.
Betong is bordering Pengkalan Hulu, where Royal Belum is located.
Tan also said there is a need for more green badge tourist guides in Perak.
