Sabah boosts efforts to attract Chinese tourists ahead of Visit Sabah 2027

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is stepping up efforts to attract more Chinese tourists ahead of Visit Sabah 2027, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said.

"China remains an important tourism market for Sabah.

"As we strengthen air connectivity, our destination marketing must also reach travellers through the platforms they use to discover and plan their holidays.

"More flights mean more visitors, and more visitors mean more opportunities for our tourism industry and local communities," he said.

During a week-long visit to China to promote the state and strengthen air links, Jafry and his delegation visited Chongqing, Guiyang, Anshun and Shanghai.

The visit included meetings with airlines, tourism industry players, business representatives, cultural groups and RedNote (Xiaohongshu).

Jafry said Chongqing Airlines operated three direct flights a week to Sabah, while more flights between Sabah and Shanghai would be available by year-end as China Eastern Airlines and Spring Airlines planned to increase their flight schedules.

As of press time, Kota Kinabalu also had direct scheduled air connectivity with several destinations in China, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, as well as Hong Kong.

"A direct flight opens the door, but we must give people a reason to keep travelling.

"That is why we are bringing tourism, culture, music, media and business together.

"Better connectivity creates opportunities across our tourism industry, from hotels and tour operators to restaurants, attractions and local businesses," Jafry said.

He added that the Sabah delegation also promoted tourism, culture, music and industry exchanges, with Malaysian singer Shila Amzah taking part in the programme in Guiyang.

Visitors from China accounted for 578,681 of the 1.1 million international arrivals to Sabah in the first eight months of 2026, an increase of 21.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Sabah also sought to strengthen its digital presence in China, with more than 10 million searches related to the state recorded on RedNote.

Among the platform's popular Sabah-related searches were sunsets, mountains, seas and fresh seafood.

"This is a very encouraging indication for Sabah. The interest is already there, and our focus now is to turn that interest into actual visits.

"We want more Chinese travellers to experience Sabah for themselves, from our spectacular sunsets and Mount Kinabalu to our islands, fresh seafood, wildlife and diverse cultures."

Sabah tourist arrivals up 4.1pc

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah tourist arrivals rose 4.1 per cent from January to August, disproving talk of a slump in the state’s tourism sector.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal said there had been an increase in both international and domestic arrivals during the period.

“The talk that Sabah’s tourism is declining is not true at all,” he said after officiating the opening ceremony of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair Sabah at the Sabah International Convention Centre, here, Saturday.

“From January to August this year, tourist numbers increased 4.1 per cent. International arrivals rose about 6.9 per cent, while local Malaysian visitors grew 2.1 per cent compared with last year,” he said.

For the record, this is the second Matta Fair held in Sabah this year, following the first edition in April.

“This time, we brought in travel agents to offer very attractive packages to draw more tourists to Sabah,” he said.

“On behalf of the State Government, I greatly appreciate and support initiatives like this by Matta to increase tourist arrivals and to promote Sabah to the world,” he added.

Asked whether the fair was part of preparations for Visit Sabah 2027, Dr Andi said it was.

“Certainly, Matta Fair is one of the programmes we have planned. God willing, in November we will release the full calendar for Visit Sabah 2027,” he said.

He said Sabah was also being actively promoted overseas, pointing out that State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin was currently in China to promote the state’s tourism sector.

The three-day fair is being held until today (Sunday) and is open to the public from 10am to 9pm.

It features 83 booths involving 28 tour and travel agencies, three hotels and resorts, two state tourism offices and four other travel-related service providers.

For the record, the April edition attracted an estimated 37,499 visitors and generated about RM24 million in sales.

For this edition, the Matta Sabah Chapter has set a target of 30,000 visitors and RM28 million in sales.

The fair is endorsed by the Sabah Tourism Board, with RHB Bank as the bank partner and Malaysia Aviation Group as the official airline partner and premier sponsor. Tourism Johor is also taking part.

Matta Sabah Chapter Chairman Alex Chong said the fair was more than a platform for selling holiday packages.

“It connects travellers with professional travel agents and tourism businesses while creating opportunities across the wider tourism ecosystem,” he said.

He said this year’s theme, “Discover More. Travel More. Experience More”, reflected the association’s encouragement for Sabahans to explore destinations in Sabah, Malaysia and overseas.

“At the same time, we are promoting Sabah as a destination for domestic and international travellers,” he said.

Present were Matta president Nigel Wong, among others.

Trans Borneo expedition to boost Sabah tourism ahead of Visit Sabah 2027

KOTA KINABALU: The 30 Years Tribute to Trans Borneo 2026 expedition is expected to strengthen Sabah's position as a leading adventure tourism destination while supporting promotional efforts for Visit Sabah 2027.

Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said overland expeditions such as the Trans Borneo journey offered travellers authentic experiences by connecting them with local communities, diverse cultures and Borneo's natural landscapes.

"Today, travellers are looking for more than just places to visit.

"They are looking for experiences that allow them to discover a destination in a more meaningful way, to meet local communities, understand different cultures and create memories that last beyond the journey.

"This is where overland and adventure tourism have an important role to play," he said at the tribute launching today.

The 30 Years Tribute to Trans Borneo 2026 is a 17-day, multi-nation 4x4 overland expedition across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei that retraces the historic 1996 route to promote regional adventure tourism and cultural exchange.

Joniston, who is also assistant minister to Sabah chief minister, said the expedition would showcase Sabah from a different perspective through participants' experiences, photographs and stories, helping to introduce the state and Borneo to international audiences.

"As we build momentum towards Visit Sabah 2027, authentic travel experiences like this play an important role in creating awareness and inspiring more travellers to discover Sabah," he said.

He added that upcoming infrastructure developments would improve cross-border connectivity between Sabah and Indonesia.

This includes the Serudong Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex and a new access road being developed under the Sabah Development Corridor.

"Once completed, it will become Sabah's first permanent international land border crossing with Indonesia, opening up new opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges," he said.

Joniston said Sabah was strategically positioned to benefit from the development of Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan, which would further enhance opportunities to promote Borneo as a cross-border tourism destination.

He added that improved accessibility would encourage more travellers to explore Borneo overland while supporting regional connectivity initiatives under the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and ASEAN.

Sabah to tighten tourism safety standards to boost tourist confidence

SANDAKAN: Sabah is moving to strengthen safety standards across its tourism industry amid growing concerns over unlicensed operators and rising expectations from international travellers, says Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan.

The Deputy Human Resources Minister said the Safety Induction for Tourism Industry (Siti) programme would be expanded throughout the state to improve safety awareness and compliance at tourism destinations.

He said international tourists were no longer looking only at attractions, but were also closely assessing safety, cleanliness and environmental conditions before deciding where to travel.

“We know international tourists constantly look at safety aspects. Is safety guaranteed? They also look at cleanliness and pollution levels at tourism centres,” he said at the Youth Employability Empowerment Appreciation Ceremony programme here on Friday (May 15).

“That is why Siti will be expanded to tourism centres across Sabah. We know many tourism centres, especially resorts, do not have the proper licences.

“This is one of the measures for us to better understand why they are unable to meet the standards that have been set,” he added.

Khairul Firdaus also acknowledged that occupational safety and health awareness in Sabah remained relatively low, saying more exposure, workshops and training programmes were needed to improve industry standards.

He said the government, together with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), was working to expand more safety-related programmes and industry exposure across Sabah to strengthen the tourism ecosystem.

Khairul Firdaus said strengthening workplace safety culture was becoming increasingly important as Sabah continued positioning itself as a major eco-tourism destination internationally.

He said globally recognised attractions in Sandakan, such as Sepilok, Kinabatangan, Rainforest Discovery Centre, and Labuk Bay made it crucial for the state to maintain strong tourism safety standards.

The programme also saw 28 students and lecturers from Sandakan Vocation College 2 undergoing tourism safety exposure training aimed at improving industry readiness among local youths.

Meanwhile, the college’s director, Christine Stanislaus Kinsik, described the programme as a valuable advantage for students preparing to enter the tourism industry.

She said students would normally have to obtain the certification on their own and bear the costs themselves, with many from Sandakan also needing to travel to Kota Kinabalu to attend the course.

“This actually gives very good job opportunities to my students in the future.

“We hope programmes like this can continue for youths,” she said, adding that such certification was increasingly important for those entering the tourism sector.

Inaugural cultural parade brings little-known Dusun Sandayo into the spotlight

KOTA KINABALU: The inaugural parade held in conjunction with Sabah Ethnic Day 6.0 has provided a meaningful platform for smaller ethnic communities, including the Dusun Sandayo, to step into the public spotlight.

Pertubuhan Kebudayaan Etnik Sandayo Sabah (Press) chairman Rosnah Taton said the parade offered valuable visibility to help highlight the Sandayo cultural identity to a wider audience.

Sandayo is a Kadazandusun sub-ethnic group in Sabah, primarily residing in Kampung Pinangkau, Kampung Golong, and Kampung Kaindangan in the Paitan district, located more than 200km from the state capital.

"We are less well-known and face the risk of extinction, with an estimated population of between 3,000 and 6,000 people.

"We have our unique traditional attire, distinctive dances and language. However, the Sandayo language is increasingly at risk as younger generations are less exposed to it at home, partly due to intermarriage and migration," she said.

Despite these challenges, she said participation in the parade marked a vital step in introducing the Sandayo identity to the public.

"If we are seen, we are remembered," she said, dressed in a blue traditional outfit known as the Sabung Impit Sandayo.

Another participant from the Era Budaya dance group, Edith Gloria John, said taking part in the state's first-ever cultural parade was about identity, pride, and rediscovering her roots.

"I wanted to take part because I enjoy dancing. Even though I am a nurse, I have a strong interest in cultural dance," she said, adding that such platforms help young people reconnect with Sabah's diverse heritage.

Rosnah and Edith were among 300 participants who braved the heat for the parade on Saturday.

Organised by the Sabah Cultural Board, the event was held in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman.

The parade began at Dataran Deasoka and proceeded for 2.3km, ending at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

Sabah Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Development Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, who flagged off the participants at 5pm, said the initiative serves to preserve ethnic heritage for future generations while providing visibility for cultural bodies.

He added that the programme has strong potential to be developed into a cultural tourism product.

Sabah promotes Kaamatan Festival to boost tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah is stepping up efforts to position the Kaamatan Festival as a major tourism draw, tapping growing demand for authentic cultural experiences.

The state is using its participation in the Matta Fair at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) to drive visitor interest ahead of the month-long harvest festival in May.

The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is taking part in the fair with 37 Sabah-based travel agents operating more than 100 booths, offering travel packages to boost forward bookings.

Huguan Siou (paramount leader) of the Kadazan Dusun, Murut and Rungus communities, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, said Kaamatan reflects Sabah's rich cultural heritage and unity among its diverse communities.

He said the festival serves as a thanksgiving celebration and a platform to strengthen social bonds through shared traditions and communal activities.

"Sabah is a beautiful place, with many tribes and a rich culture of celebrations. One of the most important is Kaamatan, which is celebrated over a month.

"This is an occasion to give thanks, work together in the spirit of 'mogitatabang', and celebrate as a community. It strengthens friendship and solidarity within society and families," he said after launching the Kaamatan invitation video at the Sabah Pavilion.

Earlier, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin launched the refreshed Explore Sabah destination brand to strengthen the state's tourism positioning.

He said Kaamatan remains one of Sabah's strongest cultural assets and a key reason for visitors to plan trips to the state.

"The presence of the Huguan Siou highlights the cultural significance of this harvest festival for our indigenous communities, while reinforcing its appeal among visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences," he said.

Jafry added that Kaamatan offers travellers an opportunity to engage more deeply with Sabah's people, traditions and way of life.

Celebrated annually across Sabah, Kaamatan features a month-long line-up of cultural performances, traditional rituals, local cuisine and the Unduk Ngadau pageant, with highlights on May 30 and 31.

With strong participation at the three-day Matta Fair, which ends on April 5, Sabah aims to convert interest into confirmed bookings, particularly for the mid-year period anchored by the festival.

Travel packages also highlight Sabah's attractions, including Kundasang for views of Mount Kinabalu, Semporna for island and diving trips, and wildlife experiences.

A teaser for the Visit Sabah 2027 campaign was also unveiled at the Sabah Pavilion, offering a preview of the state's long-term tourism plans.

Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and STB chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Mohd Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal; Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai; and STB chief executive officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit.

New Chongqing-Kota Kinabalu Direct Flight Launched To Boost Visit Malaysia 2026 Arrivals From China

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH – Tourism Malaysia today welcomed the arrival of inaugural direct service by Chongqing Airlines connecting Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport, marking an important milestone in strengthening air connectivity between China and Sabah.

The new flight OQ2193 links Chongqing with Kota Kinabalu using the modern Airbus A320neo, carrying 195 passengers per trip. The service operates three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing China at 19:00 with an estimated time of arrival in Malaysia at 23:15. This further enhances accessibility from China as one of Malaysia’s most important tourism source markets, while supporting sustained growth in visitor arrivals.

The launch of this new airline service reflects the growing interest among Chinese carriers in exploring additional cities in China across Sabah, driven by rising demand for the state’s diverse offerings. The route further strengthens connectivity for travellers from Western China, providing greater access to Sabah’s renowned landscapes, vibrant culture, and signature Malaysian hospitality. In total, 10 cities in China are connected to Sabah through major entry points such as Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Tawau Airport that operates 112 flights weekly.

“This route launch reflects the soaring demand for Sabah’s unique offerings. As a key pillar of our China strategy, this partnership with Chongqing airlines strengthens Malaysia’s position as a premier, accessible gateway for nature, culture, and world-class hospitality to drive inbound travel from china as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign,” said Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.

The inaugural arrival was received by delegates from Tourism Malaysia, led by Ms. Haryanty Abu Bakar, Director of Tourism Malaysia Sabah alongside representatives from Sabah Tourism Board, Chongqing Airlines and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, in a welcoming ceremony commemorating the milestone.

The new Chongqing–Kota Kinabalu route reflects continued collaboration between tourism authorities, airport operators and airline partners to strengthen Malaysia’s air connectivity and support sustainable tourism growth. The direct connectivity offers seamless travel options for leisure travellers, business visitors and group tours, while enhancing Kota Kinabalu’s position as a strategic gateway to East Malaysia.

China remains a fundamental region of Malaysia’s tourism expansion. In 2025, Malaysia recorded 4.7 million visitor arrivals from China, representing a 25.1 per cent year-on-year increase and underscoring the market’s continued importance and strong travel demand.

Aligned with the strategic objectives of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), the introduction of this route enhances international accessibility and further strengthens Kota Kinabalu as a key regional gateway alongside Kuala Lumpur. This is expected to encourage repeat visits, increase tourism spending and reinforce Malaysia’s position as a preferred destination for leisure, culture, gastronomy and shopping.

Tourism Malaysia extends its appreciation to Chongqing Airlines and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad for their continued collaboration and support, and looks forward to working closely on joint promotional initiatives to showcase Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings to travellers from Chongqing and the wider China market in support of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

Aquawalk to develop new RM70.5mil oceanarium in Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: Aquawalk Group Bhd's (Aquawalk) upcoming Aquaria KK project in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, is estimated to cost RM70.5 million and is targeted for completion by 2029.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the group said the oceanarium, which will be wholly owned by Aquawalk, will be funded via a combination of its initial public offering (IPO) proceeds of RM39.6 million, internally generated funds and, where appropriate, bank borrowings.

"Aquawalk KK Sdn Bhd has entered into a 30-year lease agreement with Jesselton Docklands 1 Sdn Bhd for approximately 73,054 square feet of premises within the Bedrock at Jesselton Docklands, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

"This will be the group's first venture into Sabah, further expanding its portfolio, which includes Aquaria KLCC, Aquaria Phuket and a 40 per cent equity interest in Jakarta Aquarium and Safari," it said.

Aquawalk group executive chairman Datuk Simon Foong said the project represents a key milestone in its regional growth plans.

"Our expansion into Sabah strengthens our position in the marine attractions industry and allows us to extend our brand into a high-growth tourism market.

"With its prime waterfront location, the Bedrock at Jesselton Docklands offers a compelling platform for Aquaria KK to become a key tourism landmark in Sabah," he said.

Aquawalk said the oceanarium will be wholly owned by the group, instead of the earlier planned 60:40 joint venture, to streamline execution and retain full operational control.

With a built-up area comparable to Aquaria KLCC, the new facility is projected to attract about 360,000 visitors annually, supported by growing tourist arrivals to Sabah.

Foong said the project is expected to enhance the group's recurring income base and strengthen long-term earnings visibility.

"With our proven track record in developing and operating world-class marine attractions, we are confident in delivering a compelling visitor experience in Kota Kinabalu," he added.

Foreign tourists join coral reef rehabilitation off Sabah's Pulau Tiga

BEAUFORT: A marine conservation programme off Pulau Tiga near Kuala Penyu attracted foreign tourists to participate in reef activities.

During a recent session, Sabah Parks staff observed 80 Chinese tourists taking part in a coral reef rehabilitation project on Pulau Kalampunian Besar, part of the conservation area.

The initiative, requested by a resort operator on the island, aims to boost live coral cover and raise visitor awareness of reef conservation.

Sabah's coral reefs are facing significant depletion due to climate-driven coral bleaching, notably in 2024, outbreaks of coral-eating Crown-of-Thorns starfish (CoT), and human activities such as sedimentation and fish bombing.

Park personnel, led by officer Eddy Robert, explained that the project uses man-made "coral frame" structures to support transplanted healthy coral fragments as they grow.

During the demonstration, the team used Acropora sp., a fast-growing branching coral commonly employed in reef rehabilitation.

Sabah Parks research officer Elvin Michael Bavoh said two coral frames had been prepared for the site.

"Each structure can hold about 40 coral fragments once installed. We aim to monitor them about once a month through photography, though schedules may vary depending on operational needs and available manpower," he said.

Elvin added that Sabah Parks welcomes future collaboration with tourism operators, especially for programmes that promote environmental awareness.

Chinese tourists made up the largest share of international arrivals in Sabah last year, with 657,528 visitors.

Cruise ships set to sail thousands of visitors to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to welcome at least 30,000 tourists from cruise ship arrivals this year.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the projection followed confirmation from Suria Capital Holdings Bhd of 25 cruise ship calls scheduled for 2026.

Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), said the state welcomed initiatives that attract visitors and boost tourism-related spending, particularly for local communities and the wider economy.

"Collaboration between the STB and cruise industry players can be further strengthened to better understand how we can jointly promote cruise tourism and Sabah in general, especially for short-stay and day visitors, by leveraging cruise ship arrivals," he said in a statement.

In 2025, Sabah recorded 23 cruise ship calls carrying 24,634 passengers, with 19 ships docking at Kota Kinabalu Port and four at Sandakan Port — nearly double the 14 ships and 16,727 passengers in 2024.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Sabah saw 30 cruise ship calls in 2019, bringing in 36,183 passengers.

This year, Sabah is targeting four million visitors under Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Last year, the state exceeded its target of 3.5 million, recording approximately 3.6 million arrivals.

Juneyao Air Launches Inaugural Flight From Shanghai To Tawau

TAWAU, SABAH— Juneyao Air marked a significant milestone today with the arrival of its inaugural flight from Shanghai to Tawau, further strengthening air connectivity between China and Sabah.

The new route officially commenced operations, operating three times weekly (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) with a capacity of 180 seats. The service is expected to cater to the growing demand for leisure travel from China while enhancing tourism flows and people-to-people exchanges between the two destinations.

The inaugural flight was welcomed by Mr. Darryl Hamzah, representative from Tourism Malaysia, together with Mr. Rehan Shafiq Azizan, from Malaysia Airport Berhad and Ms. Shirly Ho, from Sabah Tourism Board. Also present was Mr Simon Ng, representing Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd, ground handler for Juneyao Air.

“We warmly welcome Juneyao Air’s inaugural scheduled flight from Shanghai to Tawau. This new service strengthens connectivity between China and Malaysia through Sabah, providing greater convenience for travellers and supporting Sabah’s tourism growth during Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026),” said Mr Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.

The launch of this scheduled service forms part of broader efforts to strengthen inbound travel from China, a key source market for Malaysia, while enhancing air connectivity to East Malaysia. Tawau serves as a strategic gateway to Sabah’s east coast, providing access to renowned marine tourism destinations, eco-adventures and distinctive cultural experiences, most notably Semporna and its surrounding islands.

China continues to play a critical role in Malaysia’s tourism landscape. This momentum is highlighted by robust performance from the Chinese market, which recorded 4.3 million visitor arrivals from January to November 2025, marking a 25.9 per cent year-on-year increase. Such figures underscore China’s enduring importance to Malaysia’s tourism expansion strategy and the overarching success of the VM2026 campaign.

The introduction of the Shanghai–Tawau scheduled service supports Malaysia’s delivery of VM2026 by enhancing international accessibility and expanding connectivity to key tourism destinations in East Malaysia. Improved air links are expected to play a vital role in sustaining tourism momentum, encouraging repeat visits and positioning Sabah as a compelling destination for international travellers. These efforts will showcase Malaysia’s diverse attractions, rich culinary heritage, vibrant festivals and renowned hospitality. The added flight capacity supports ongoing initiatives to boost visitor arrivals and increase tourism spending from key source markets.
