Tourism Ministry: Physical visibility must be enhanced ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry has acknowledged the need to enhance physical visibility and on-ground promotion for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, set to begin in just two months.

Its deputy minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said that while the government had already begun international and domestic promotions, the current campaign placed greater emphasis on digital platforms.

"We have carried out various promotions, though this time our approach is slightly different as it focuses more on digital promotion.

"When we talk about a digital approach, it may not be visible physically, but I must admit that in terms of physical visibility, we need to enhance and intensify our efforts.

"Although time is short, we still have enough to take note of what has been raised," he said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2026 at the committee stage today.

Khairul Firdaus said this in response to Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS–Puncak Borneo), who questioned the apparent lack of promotional activity compared with past Visit Malaysia campaigns.

Willie noted that previous editions were marked by banners, gateways and nationwide excitement, while this year's efforts seemed "quiet, cold and dull".

"As we approach Visit Malaysia Year 2026 in just two months, I have noticed that there has been no publicity, either internationally or domestically.

"I still remember that in previous campaigns, there were grand gateways, large banners and pamphlets everywhere when we went to the airport.

"It really felt like we were ushering in a new year, celebrating Visit Malaysia Year but this time, it feels rather quiet, very cold and dull. What has happened?" said Willie.

Meanwhile, Khairul Firdaus (GRS–Batu Sapi) said several high-impact programmes were already being lined up in Sarawak for 2026, including the Rainforest Music Festival, Borneo Jazz Festival, Kapit Dayak Cultural Festival and the Borneo Craft Festival in line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

He added that promotions for these events were ongoing through Malaysian tourism offices abroad and that special travel packages were being created to showcase Sarawak's rich cultural heritage.

In a light-hearted remark at the end of his speech, Khairul Firdaus said that in conjunction with next year's Visit Malaysia Year, all lawmakers are "appointed as ambassadors" to promote Malaysia across the world.

1.3 bilion capaian digital promosi Malaysia

KOTA KINABALU: Sri Pelancongan Sabah and Tourplus have inked a service agreement to develop a smartphone application known as Hello Sabah to serve as a digital platform for the state tourism industry.

Sri Pelancongan Sabah general manager Zachary Mobijohn and TourPlus Technology founder-cum-chief executive officer Rickson Goh signed the agreement at a hotel here.

The partnership will allow Hello Sabah to digitise the state tourism business, allowing local product owners and industry players from the public as well as private sectors to market their goods and services.

It features an online booking platform for rural tourism and community-based tourism, among others.

Zachary said Sri Pelancongan Sabah, a subsidiary of Sabah Tourism Board, played a role as a strategic partner in the development of the application that was set to promote Sabah's tourism industry by utilising Tourplus' advanced technology.

He said that the application aimed to register up to 100,000 merchants on the mobile application as its ultimate target.

"Merchants who are interested to be featured on this platform must pay a listing fee of RM300.

"However, in order to entice more merchants to take advantage of this platform, we will be waiving this listing fee to all merchants who sign up in 2022.

"On top of that, we will only be charging a minimum payment gateway fee of 2.12 per cent for the first 100 transactions. Normal commission rates will apply thereafter," added Zachary.

Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who witnessed the event said the Sabah Tourism Board would monitor the progress and success of the mobile application in achieving its purpose, including the promotion of rural tourism.

"The rural tourism sector has been through a lot of ups and downs since 2014 to get to where it is today, with some community-based tourism operators earning Asean and global standard recognition.

"We aspire to make our rural areas into world-class rural tourism destinations by 2030.

"To do so, we need to be able to provide a digital platform to present our rich culture, traditions, food, handicraft, and local community way of life to the world," he said.

SMEs success lies in leveraging data and technology to ease COVID pressures

PATA_OTA_Stakeholder Research_Report-9Nov.png

BANGKOK, November 11, 2020 -- Digitalization and innovation are key for SMEs survival as the travel industry emerges from COVID-19’s impact according to a report by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), conducted by Twenty31 Consulting Inc. and supported by Agoda, revealed at the World Travel Market today.  PATA’s research report “The role of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) in supporting Asia-Pacific SMEs in Recovery” aims to provide insights to benefit small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the hospitality and tourism space that make up a large proportion of travel providers, as they pivot and adapt in the face of COVID-19.

With the pandemic dramatically changing how and where consumers travel, it is essential for hospitality businesses, especially SMEs, to adapt their operations to thrive within a digital global ecosystem. The report highlights key areas where digital travel platforms and governments can support tourism SMEs in the Asia Pacific region.

  • SMEs are leveraging OTAs’ digital platforms to accelerate recovery. There is a shift in the dynamic of the relationship between SMEs and OTAs, with the latter being acknowledged and increasingly valued as a technology, data and marketing partner. It is vital for SME hospitality providers to understand trends and reach new audiences during these times. SMEs leveraging OTAs can reduce their top-down investment especially around payments features, customer support as well as marketing efforts. OTAs have also expanded opportunities for destination diversification, helping to drive tourism in second and third tier cities. “We have seen a real push for OTAs to do more than simply selling rooms. They are helping us with other services, and this is really helping us forecast our needs and drive more sales.” says a hospitality SME in Thailand.
  • The use of data insights will future proof SMEs as they navigate today’s ever-changing landscape of the travel and tourism industry. OTAs are technology partners that are well placed to help provide SMEs a comprehensive understanding of data insights to enhance their businesses. Data insights can be used to optimize revenue through meta-search, machine learning, artificial intelligence. product diversification and platform centralization. “OTAs are now using AI tech to tailor offers to customers and that is going to be very interesting. This will likely allow SMEs to match our products and services with high-potential consumers and drive better ROI.” says a hospitality SME in Singapore.
  • SMEs call on governments to work with OTAs to boost post-COVID travel recovery. During this crucial recovery period, more private-public collaboration will boost travel confidence, where the local government can draw on the private sector’s commercial expertise to spot and create new opportunities to improve the industry, businesses and lives impacted by COVID, as well as stay relevant in the transforming economic environment. “The government can do more to engage the private sector, especially around decision making and cooperative marketing.” – tour operator SME in Indonesia.

The study also looks at the changing landscape of the travel and tourism industry and how OTAs have rapidly accelerated the growth in the region where APAC-based OTAs represent more than a third of global gross bookings.

“Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) play a crucial role in the recovery process, where SMEs can leverage their data and digitize in order to adapt and build long term resiliency. We are optimistic that the industry will eventually recover with governments and private sectors coming together to ensure that no one gets left behind. We look forward to working with our partners, such as Agoda, as we continue to hear from SME operators and how we can advance the discussion around the future of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region, one that is sustainable and inclusive for all,” says Dr. Mario Hardy, CEO of Pacific Asia Travel Association.

"Successful hoteliers use data and technology for price and marketing optimization. Increasingly, many SME tourism enterprises find themselves on the wrong side of the tech moat - unable to do complex data analytics and global marketing in-house. This report shows how SMEs successfully leverage platforms like Agoda to enjoy the benefits of technology to reach laser-targeted audiences in the far corners of the world. Agoda also helps SME hotels participate in several government partnership programs in Asia. SMEs are calling for further collaboration between governments and tech platforms to help revitalize the hard-hit tourism industry.” says Greg Wong, Managing Director of Global Affairs at Agoda.

The complimentary report is available on the PATA website at https://bit.ly/PATA_OTA_report.

Sarawak wants to tap potential of digital tourism

KUCHING, Sept 26 -- The Sarawak government is determined to tap into digital tourism as part of efforts to boost tourist arrivals in the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government is aware that digitalisation is a strong driver of globalisation and brings great potential for revenue growth.

“The state tourism industry especially will greatly benefit from such an initiative (digitalisation). We are all looking into various strategies in order to boost the tourism industry and one of them is to invest in digital tourism.

“We want to promote Sarawak as a must-visit destination, offering a memorable experience for a multitude of different types of visitors and encourage return visits. In short digital tourism is all about enhancing and improving traveller's experience and securing their interest,” he said in his speech at the International Conference on Archaeology 2019 here today.

His speech was read out by state Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abang Johari said digital tourism would also create opportunities for entrepreneurs to promote their goods and services to a broader audience and increase their business prospects.

While promoting tourism and upgrading some of the tourist destinations in the state are important, he stressed that the protection of world heritage sites in Sarawak is equally imperative to the state government.

“The state government has acknowledged that the Niah Caves and other identified archaeological sites across Sarawak are of great importance.

“This invaluable historical heritage tells us about past human activities and thus also reflects a nation's civilisation. Therefore, the protection and preservation of these heritage assets are a priority and Sarawak is committed to this,” he added.
