Club Med Cherating to close for major renovation

Club Med Cherating will undergo a comprehensive renovation from October 11, 2026, ushering in a new chapter for the group’s first resort in Asia.

The refurbishment will reposition the property as an all-inclusive resort centred on its 80ha jungle setting and beachfront location. Club Med said the redesign will preserve the site’s natural environment while introducing upgraded accommodation, public spaces and guest facilities.

Opened as Club Med’s first resort in Asia, Cherating remains the only property in the region with a self-contained jungle within the resort grounds.

The refreshed resort will introduce five new signature experiences, including the Jungle Express transport service through the jungle, guided nature trails, a cliffside climbing experience, farm-to-table dining at Rembulan gourmet club, and a firefly mangrove cruise.

The renovation will also follow the group’s Happy to Care sustainability programme, with plans to retain the existing low-density footprint and protect local biodiversity.

Ahead of the closure, Club Med will host a series of farewell activities from mid-August, including a weekly street market, sports challenges, a resort memory wall and charity auctions featuring memorabilia from the property. The final auction will take place on October 8, with proceeds going to charity.

Rachael Harding, CEO, Southeast Asia and Pacific, Club Med, said: “Club Med Cherating holds a special place in our history as our first home in Asia. This transformation will open a new chapter for this iconic destination, creating a more sophisticated yet deeply natural escape where guests can leave daily life behind and reconnect with the world around them.”

Holiday Villa to open flagship hotel in KLCC as tourism outlook brightens

KUALA LUMPUR: HOLIDAY Villa Hotels & Resorts is strengthening its presence in Kuala Lumpur with a new city-centre property, positioning the hospitality group to tap into the expected recovery in tourism demand under the extended Visit Malaysia campaign, which runs through 2027.

The group has taken over Crown Regency Serviced Suites on Jalan P. Ramlee and will rebrand it as Holiday Villa Hotel Suites Kuala Lumpur by early next year, adding a flagship asset in the capital's commercial and tourism district.

The upgraded property will offer 103 suites, comprising one-, two- and three-bedroom units, catering to business travellers, families and long-stay guests seeking accommodation in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts chief executive officer and managing director Nina Karina Tan Sri Azman Shah said the group is refurbishing and upgrading the property to enhance its positioning and guest experience.

She said the Kuala Lumpur opening forms part of Holiday Villa's broader expansion strategy, which includes partnerships with international hospitality operators and growth through management and licensing agreements.

"We currently operate 28 hotels across five countries, and we continue to expand in key cities with high demand rates as we grow our regional hospitality portfolio," she told Business Times.

Nina said the group's expansion strategy is being supported by its strategic partnership with GreenTree Inns (GTI) Hotel Management Group, the parent company of New York Stock Exchange-listed GreenTree Hospitality Group Ltd.

Under the partnership, the first GreenTree Hotel in Malaysia is scheduled to open in Permas Jaya, Johor, in the fourth quarter of this year. The more than 200-room property is being developed by Malpakat Leisure Group, which also owns the four-star, 345-room Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City Centre.

The partnership has also gained traction in China, with the opening of the 360-room five-star Holiday Villa Xilin Mountain Hotel in Guizhou and a city-centre hotel in Weihai, Shandong, in 2025. The partners have since expanded their footprint further with the launch of Holiday ViVilla Hotel, Miao Village in Guizhou, and CitiVilla Tianjin Hotel in Beichen, Tianjin.

"Our strategic partnership with GreenTree Hospitality Group continues to support our expansion strategy, allowing us to strengthen our footprint in key markets while delivering consistent quality and value to our guests," Nina said.

Next year, the partnership will open Holiday Villa Spring Resort & Villas Nanyue, in Hengyang, Hunan, and Holiday ViVilla Hotel Shanghai by Holiday Villa in Shanghai.

In Malaysia, Holiday Villa Terengganu is slated for a soft opening by the end of 2026.

The group is understood to be in discussions with several developers and investors to expand the Holiday Villa brand through hotel management and licensing agreements in Malaysia and other Asian cities and resort destinations.

Established in 1987 with its first resort in Cherating, Pahang, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts has expanded into an international hospitality group with properties across Malaysia, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and China.

The expansion comes as Malaysia prepares for stronger tourism growth under the extended Visit Malaysia campaign, with the government targeting 47 million international tourist arrivals and RM329 billion in tourism receipts.

Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Manoharan Periasamy recently told Business Times that extending the campaign through 2027 could enable Malaysia to surpass its original tourism targets.

He said Asean remains Malaysia's largest visitor market, contributing about 70 per cent of total arrivals, followed by China and India.

There are currently more than 700 weekly flights connecting Malaysia and various cities in China, and discussions are underway with airlines to further increase frequencies in response to growing demand, he said.

While higher airfares and geopolitical tensions had temporarily dampened international travel, Manoharan said booking trends are improving as conditions stabilise.

He added that domestic tourism continues to provide a strong foundation for the industry, with Malaysians maintaining robust travel activity following the pandemic.

Official data showed domestic tourism expenditure rose 13.6 per cent to RM121.3 billion in 2025, while total domestic visitor trips increased 11.5 per cent to 290.1 million.

YOTEL Kuala Lumpur dijangka menawarkan kira-kira 290 bilik hotel selain kemudahan premium seperti ruang gaya hidup atas bumbung, kawasan kerja bersama, fasiliti kesejahteraan dan komponen pusat perubatan bersepadu.

Soori Penang makes TIME's 2026 list of World's Greatest Places

GEORGE TOWN: Soori Penang has been named by TIME, an American news magazine based in New York City, as one of the World's Greatest Places of 2026.

Every year, TIME gathers nominations for places - such as hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums and parks - from its global network of correspondents and contributors, as well as through an application process, focusing on those that offer fresh, exciting and meaningful experiences.

Soori, a 15-suite hotel, draws on its owner, SCDA Architects founding principal Soo K. Chan's early years living in a historic shophouse within the storied Khoo Kongsi compound here, translating those memories for today's travellers.

Unlike many heritage hotels which lean heavily on ornate Peranakan antiques, Soori takes a more thoughtful, contemporary approach.

According to the author, Kathryn Romeyn, from the outside, Soori blends seamlessly with its traditionally styled surroundings.

Inside, however, custom onyx lamps cast a gentle glow through once-shadowy interiors, while restored glazed light wells brighten tranquil water features — an homage to the monsoon rains Chan remembers filling the inner courtyards below.

A restrained palette allows form and texture to take centre stage, accented by subtle nods to Penang's multicultural heritage, such as shishi lion statues and circular stone-look windows inspired by those in the ornate clan house temple.

State Tourism Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, in congratulating Soori, said it was another proud moment for Penang.

"Soori Penang, the newly opened boutique hotel in George Town, has been selected for TIME's 2026 World's Greatest Places, a global list celebrating 100 remarkable destinations shaping the future of travel," he said.

"Having opened its doors in January 2026, the hotel brings together thoughtful design, heritage surroundings and modern hospitality right in the heart of Penang's Unesco World Heritage Site.

"A wonderful milestone that further strengthens Penang's reputation as a world-class destination," he added.

Hotel boom and upgrades: Malaysia gears up for VMY2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's thriving tourism sector, bolstered by preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026), is expected to trigger a surge in investment in new hotel developments and refurbishments of existing properties across major cities, as well as in serviced residences and short-stay apartments, according to Henry Butcher Malaysia.

Tang Chee Meng, the firm's chief operating officer, noted that the sector's strong performance in 2025, ahead of VMY2026, has already lifted the hospitality industry, particularly in states popular with tourists.

"VM2026, with its bold targets and substantial promotions budget, is expected to benefit the sector and hold/push up the average occupancy rate and average room rates of the hotels in 2026," he said.

Tang also highlighted that improvements in accessibility, including the launch of the ETS service between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru and direct flights between Ipoh and Singapore by Batik Air, will further stimulate domestic and international travel.

As of the third quarter of 2025, Malaysia had 3,645 hotels with a total of 297,226 rooms, the firm said.

VMY2026 marks the sixth edition of Malaysia's flagship tourism campaign, following previous editions in 1990, 1994, 2007, 2014 and 2020. The government has set ambitious targets of 47 million visitors and RM329 billion in tourism receipts for the campaign year.

Hoteliers are preparing to welcome an anticipated influx of visitors, supported by a government package of funding, incentives and tax breaks aimed at boosting tourism-led growth.

Under the 2026 Budget, more than RM700 million has been allocated to strengthen the tourism sector, with RM500 million directed specifically toward the VMY2026 campaign, reinforcing tourism's role as a key economic driver. Corporate tax exemptions and incentives will also be available for tourism-related income and capital expenditure, including renovations and upgrades by operators.

Industry players have welcomed the measures as a timely boost.

"The government's efforts to strengthen tourism are a positive signal for the industry," said Sugumaran Ramachandran, general manager of the five-star DoubleTree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City.

"We see these developments as part of a broader effort to create a vibrant and competitive hospitality landscape, and we're committed to playing our role in that journey," he told Business Times.

Sugumaran noted that for hotel operators, initiatives that support growth and enhance the overall travel experience are particularly encouraging.

"Our focus remains on delivering exceptional hospitality and preparing to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers. We continue to align our strategies with long-term goals such as improving guest experiences, maintaining high service standards, and ensuring operational efficiency so that we're ready to contribute to Malaysia's tourism success."

Sugumaran added that the 2026 Budget reinforces confidence in the sector's growth trajectory, with broader initiatives in sustainability and technology aligning well with industry trends.

"Innovations like the robot concierge at i-City are a great example of how technology can enhance the visitor experience. Attractions that combine convenience with novelty create a sense of excitement and help position destinations like i-City as modern and forward-thinking. These kinds of features not only add value for guests but also showcase Malaysia's ability to embrace smart solutions in tourism," he said.

At the property level, he said the hotel has been investing in technology and sustainability to meet evolving traveller expectations, including smart guest solutions, energy-efficient systems and digital conveniences such as Hilton Honours app check-in and Digital Key access.

Strategically located in i-City – a vibrant hub of theme parks, retail and corporate offices – DoubleTree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City offers curated packages for families, MICE events and international visitors.

The hotel has recently secured a renewed 5-star certification from both Tourism Malaysia and the Selangor State Tourism Board, valid for the next three years.

Sugumaran said this achievement reflects the hotel's continuous commitment to excellence and delivering outstanding hospitality experiences year after year.

Three Bayview hotels to join Oriental Holdings under Ascott management

The three hotels will be repositioned under Ascott management, with renovations starting in 2026 and relaunch planned for 2028; Bayview Hotel Penang, pictured

Oriental Holdings and its subsidiaries plan to acquire Bayview Beach Resort Penang, Bayview Hotel Georgetown and Bayview Hotel Langkawi as part of a strategy to strengthen their hospitality portfolio. The hotels will be repositioned under the management of Ascott, appointed by the current owners.

The proposed acquisition of Bayview Hotel Georgetown also includes Wisma Boon Siew, an adjoining 15-storey building comprising an office tower, two showrooms and car parking bays.

Once the transaction is complete, Oriental Holdings will assume ownership of all three properties, with Ascott continuing as operator and manager. The acquisitions require shareholder approval at an Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for 1Q2026, followed by completion of the transaction.

The hotels will be aligned with distinct brands within Ascott’s portfolio, each targeting specific traveller segments. Renovations are scheduled to start in 2026, with a relaunch planned for 1Q2028. Improvements to design, facilities and guest experiences will be supported by Ascott’s technical services team and its established distribution channels, including the Ascott Star Rewards loyalty programme with over seven million members worldwide.

Under the plan, the 365-room Bayview Beach Resort Penang will be rebranded as Ascott Batu Ferringhi Penang, marking the debut of Ascott’s flagship brand in a Malaysian beachfront setting. The 340-room Bayview Hotel Georgetown will become Oakwood Georgetown Penang, serving business-leisure travellers in George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage district. The 282-room Bayview Hotel Langkawi will be rebranded as Fox Hotel Langkawi, expanding Ascott’s Fox brand in Malaysia.

Adrian Wong, chief financial officer at Oriental Holdings, said: “Subject to shareholder approval, this proposed acquisition represents a meaningful step in strengthening (the group’s) presence in Malaysia’s hospitality sector. If completed, it will expand our hotel portfolio in the country from one to four properties and grow our overall portfolio from seven to 10.”

Wong Kar Ling, chief strategy officer and managing director, Southeast Asia, Ascott, said: “These three distinctive properties reflect the strength and flexibility of Ascott’s multi-typology brand strategy. With their addition, our presence in Malaysia now spans over 50 properties, including both operational and pipeline developments. We look forward to welcoming guests to the refreshed spaces that reflect each brand’s unique design approach and guest experience.”

Hilton grows Malaysian hotel portfolio, to debut Tapestry Collection in Melaka

Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur is slated to open next year. Pic credit: Hilton

KUALA LUMPUR: Hilton is ramping up its luxury and lifestyle presence in Southeast Asia with three new signings, including Malaysia's first Tapestry Collection by Hilton in Melaka.

The signing marks the debut of the Tapestry brand in Malaysia and adds to Hilton's robust pipeline of 17 upcoming luxury and lifestyle projects across the region – four of which are in Malaysia – contributing nearly 4,000 new keys.

The other two signings, Conrad Hoi'An and Conrad Bangkok Sukhumvit Queen's Park, will further cement the group's regional presence, joining Hilton's growing portfolio of brands such as Waldorf Astoria, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, and Curio Collection by Hilton.

The Tapestry Collection by Hilton joins the pipeline of other upcoming brand entries in Malaysia, including Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, and Curio Collection by Hilton.

The expansion reflects Hilton's strong confidence in Malaysia's tourism outlook, with the country recording over 28 million tourist arrivals between January and August 2025 and targeting 47 million visitors in 2026.

"Hilton's growing luxury and lifestyle portfolio is underpinned by growing customer demand for our brands in resort destinations, urban hubs, and new cities across Asia Pacific," said Clarence Tan, senior vice president, Development, Asia Pacific, Hilton.

"It also reflects the trust and confidence that owners and developers place in Hilton and our proven ability to deliver strong commercial performance and a resilient business model in a dynamic, fast-growing market."

Upcoming highlights include Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur and Conrad Kuala Lumpur, both slated to open in 2026, and The Nautilus Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton, opening in Langkawi next year – each embodying Hilton's strategy to deliver tailored, design-led hospitality experiences across Asia Pacific.

Across Asia Pacific, Hilton plans to expand its luxury and lifestyle hotel portfolio by at least 50 per cent, building on a base of over 160 operating properties. This growth is supported by a strong regional macroeconomic outlook, a rising affluent and middle-class population seeking new experiences, and increasing investor interest in hospitality as a high-potential asset class.

JOMhotel.com rebrands with smarter tech, leaner model

Malaysian hospitality tech start-up JOMhotel.com is reshaping how hotels manage unsold rooms and how travellers book last-minute stays, positioning itself as a fairer, faster and more transparent alternative to global OTAs.

Previously known as JustTonite.com, the rebranded platform retains its same-day stay focus while introducing smarter technology and a stronger Malaysian identity.

“It’s a platform built by hoteliers, for hoteliers. Our leadership team of hotel general managers, online travel agent specialists, and tech developers share one vision: to help hotels optimise revenue while offering travellers great last-minute deals,” said Anthony Kong, director of JOMhotel.com.

Unlike traditional OTAs that prioritise high commissions or paid visibility, JOMhotel.com operates on a lean commission model and organic ranking algorithm, ensuring all hotel partners receive equal exposure. The platform’s six dynamic rate tiers enable hotels to release distressed inventory strategically, while an instant payment feature guarantees immediate revenue upon booking – eliminating long pay-out cycles.

For travellers, JOMhotel.com delivers verified stays at same-day, non-refundable rates, giving them access to unbeatable deals “whether they’re extending a business trip, attending a concert, or simply living the you-only-live-once (YOLO) lifestyle”, said Kong.

Targeting Malaysia’s growing same-day booking market — estimated at around 30 per cent of hotel stays — the platform caters to urban professionals, concert-goers, and spontaneous travellers seeking trusted, great-value accommodation.

JOMhotel.com plans to launch its mobile app in 2H2026, alongside a rewards programme offering instant credits and member-only promotions. As Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Kong said the platform will help hotels convert distressed inventory into real revenue while giving travellers more ways to experience the country spontaneously.

YTL Hotels acquires Thistle Johor, plans 2026 relaunch as five-star property

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Corp Bhd's hospitality arm, YTL Hotels, has acquired the 380-room Thistle Hotel in Johor Bahru from GuocoLand Ltd in a RM150 million deal, underscoring its confidence in Johor's rise as a regional economic and tourism hub.

The transaction, disclosed by GuocoLand in a Singapore Exchange filing, will see the Singapore-listed developer book a net gain of RM35 million (S$11 million) upon completion.

YTL Hotels said the acquisition marks a strategic expansion milestone in Malaysia's fast-growing southern corridor, where Johor is being transformed by mega infrastructure projects, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, and increasing cross-border travel with Singapore.

The 17-storey property located in Jalan Sungai Chat close to the city centre will undergo a full-scale refurbishment before reopening in 2026 as a five-star destination hotel featuring premium accommodation, curated dining concepts, modern event and meeting facilities, and lifestyle-oriented leisure offerings tailored for both international and domestic markets.

Executive chairman of YTL Corp, Tan Sri (Sir) Francis Yeoh, said the deal reflects the group's commitment to advancing Malaysia's tourism landscape.

"Johor Bahru is a state of extraordinary potential, experiencing tremendous growth and transformation. We are proud to contribute to this momentum by introducing a new international hotel experience to the region. This investment represents our ongoing commitment to Malaysia's tourism landscape, delivering memorable stays that combine exceptional service with thoughtfully designed experiences," Yeoh said in a statement.

YTL Hotels currently owns and manages more than 35 properties with over 7,000 rooms across Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Australia, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The addition of the Johor Bahru property not only strengthens its Malaysian portfolio but also reinforces its standing as one of the region's most respected hospitality groups.

Park Hyatt makes landmark debut in Merdeka 118

KUALA LUMPUR: Hyatt Hotels Corporation has officially opened Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, marking the luxury brand's highly anticipated entry into Malaysia and its 50th property globally.

Set within the upper floors of Merdeka 118 – the tallest skyscraper in Asia Pacific and the second tallest in the world – the hotel offers an elevated urban retreat. Positioned between levels 75 and 114, Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur delivers unmatched panoramic views of the capital's skyline, redefining luxury hospitality in the heart of the city.

Permodalan Nasional Berhad group chairman Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda welcomed the brand as a key component of the landmark Merdeka 118 development.

Raja Arshad said Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur is more than a hotel – it is part of a legacy project that aims to unlock new potential, foster national pride, and serve as a catalyst for community upliftment.

"Merdeka 118 will be a catalyst to uplift communities and enhance Kuala Lumpur's long-term vibrancy as part of Warisan KL, an initiative to celebrate heritage and revitalise the city. It plays an important role in supporting Kuala Lumpur's cultural regeneration and heritage tourism," he said in a statement.

David Udell, group president, Asia Pacific, Hyatt, highlighted the opening as a significant milestone in the brand's global journey.

"The Park Hyatt brand hits a milestone at 50 properties globally, adding its first hotel in Malaysia with the debut of Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur – also marking an important breakthrough for the brand within Southeast Asia and worldwide.

"This makes for an exciting chapter for Hyatt's brand growth in the region, with three new properties opening in Kuala Lumpur within a year, an expansion of diverse offerings," he said.

Designed as a sanctuary in the sky, the hotel features 252 guest rooms, including 27 suites, each offering floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping city views. The interiors combine understated elegance with locally inspired art, creating a refined, tranquil environment for both business and leisure travellers.

Herman Kemp, the hotel's general manager, said, "We are proud to be part of the new Merdeka 118 precinct, with its rich, historical significance and its proximity to the vibrant Petaling Street Chinatown."

From locally inspired art and design to purposeful wellness and elevated culinary concepts rooted in Malaysian culture, hotel guests will discover enriching experiences from this unique vantage point and through the Park Hyatt brand's distinctive take on understated luxury, he said.

"STRA juga mengakibatkan kehilangan hasil cukai kepada pihak berkuasa tempatan (PBT) dan kerajaan Persekutuan. Ia turut boleh mencetuskan penyelewengan harga pasaran yang merugikan pengusaha hotel yang sah;
