FAO 'syurga' membeli-belah baharu

Mara Plans To Have Chain Of Tourist-Friendly Factory Outlets

ALOR SETAR, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) is planning to build a chain of tourist-friendly factory outlets at several locations next year, said its chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

Among the proposed locations are Langkawi and Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah, Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, Melaka and Kuala Lumpur, which are popular tourist destinations.

Annuar said the factory outlets, which to be built on a shopping village concept, would be able to attract tourists who were looking for a variety of products when shopping while being entertained to traditional performances by Malaysia's diverse society.

"As in Langkawi, Bukit Kayu Hitam and Rantau Panjang, all products sold (at the factory outlets) will be tax-free. Prior to this, branded goods were only available at major stores, but we will change the concept to attract tourists.

"We plan to sell more than 100 branded products in addition to having local products on display for tourists," he told Bernama after meeting Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir at Wisma Darul Aman today.

Annuar said he believed the establishment of the factory outlets would also lead to an increase in the number of Bumiputera retailers in future.

In addition, he said Mara also planned to renovate the Mara-owned Langkawi Island Plaza building in Kuah, Langkawi, and turn it into a budget hotel at a cost of RM20 million.

In another development, he said Mara would continue to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to resolve the fraud issue in connection with the purchase of properties worth RM65 million in Australia.

Annuar said MACC was still investigating the case to obtain concrete evidence to prosecute those who had committed the fraud.

"Mara has also appointed a panel of external auditors to conduct forensic audit investigation with an allocation of RM2 million. So we are not just keeping quiet about the issue, investigations are ongoing," he said.

Factory Outlet Sales, Latest Attraction At Kenyir Festival

www.ketengah.gov.my
HULU TERENGGANU, May 13 (Bernama) -- The month-long Kenyir Festival which began on April 29 has been enlivened by factory outlet sales in Pengkalan Gawi since last Friday.

Terengganu Tengah Development Authority (KETENGAH) general manager Wan Mat Amin Wan Daud said this was because the sales of products brought directly from factories had become the latest attraction for visitors at the festival, apart from its other activities.

"We have received positive feedback from visitors and the sales on the first day grossed around RM50,000. "Based on the encouraging response, we hope to rake in RM2 million before the festival ends," he told reporters here.

Wan Mat Amin said the target was achievable as the number of visitors at the carnival had been increasing since the Kenyir Elephant Village(KEV) was opened to public last Friday.

"Among the products on sales are apparels, sports equipment, luggage bags, crockery and electrical appliances and all stocks are being replenished following the strong demand," he added.

More than 50 activities have been lined up for festival and the Terengganu state government is targeting to lure 500,000 visitors to Tasik Kenyir which has 340 man-made islands in conjunction with 2014 Visit Malaysia Year.

MAHB, Mitsui to jointly develop largest factory outlet project in South-East Asia

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and Mitsui Fudosan Co Ltd have signed a joint-venture (JV) agreement to develop the largest factory outlet project in South-East Asia.

Under the agreement, the operator of Malaysia’s international airport, together with the Japanese developer, will form a JV company called MFMA Development Sdn Bhd, with a total investment of RM335mil. MAHB will hold a 30% stake in MFMA and Mitsui the rest.

Tentatively called Mitsui Outlet Factory Park KLIA, MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid said the project would transform KL International Airport (KLIA) into an airport city with tourism and employment opportunities.

“This is the first foreign investment in KLIA and Phase One will begin construction by the end of this year. The bidding process for contractors to participate will start very soon,” he said after the signing ceremony yesterday.

Located within the KLIA, the project is part of the Government’s effort to transform KLIA into a retail hub. This project is targeted to contribute gross national income of RM220mil by 2020, and generating 2,577 jobs.

Phase One consists of a shopping area of approximately 25,000 sq m, with the potential to house about 140 shops, and is scheduled to open in early 2015. The park will house retailers of luxury goods complete with food and beverage and entertainment facilities.

Mitsui executive managing officer Takeshi Suzuki said KLIA was a very important place where people would arrive for business and sight-seeing purposes.

JOHOR BAHARU, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Construction of phase two of the Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), covering over 100,000 sq ft, is scheduled to open in November 2013.

In a statement Tuesday, JPO said phase two will have approximately 40 stores, bringing the total to 120. "These stores will enhance the shopping experience for visitors and continue to support the economic development of the area," it said.

Since its opening in 2011, JPO has grown to become a major shopping destination attracting millions of visitors from Malaysia, Singapore and the region, it said.

The outlet is operated by Genting Simon Sdb Bhd, a wholly-owned unit of Simon Genting Ltd, which in turn is a 50:50 joint venture between Genting Plantation's Azzon Ltd and Premium Outlets, the outlet division of Simon Property Group.

KLIA to be developed into major aeropolis soon

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will soon be developed into a major aeropolis or airport city.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said this would be the airport’s next phase of growth.

“We will have Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA, the first upscale Japanese factory outlet park by Mitsui Fudosan Co Ltd in South-East Asia.

“Aside from retail and commercial offerings, KLIA will also host operations of a high-tech industrial and logistics complex to serve the need for aviation-related MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) activities as well as high-value, time sensitive cargo operations,” he said. KLIA had come a long way since it was first opened in 1998.

Bashir said MAHB airports handled 67.2 million passengers last year, of which 32.8 million were international passengers. KLIA handled 85.4% of the international passengers.

He said KLIA handles 59.4% of Malaysia’s total passenger traffic and 84% of international cargo. “As such, most of the economic contribution by the aviation sector in Malaysia originates from KLIA,” he said.

He added that KLIA is also the main revenue generator for MAHB and supported 29 other non-profitable community and rural airports. “Some rural airports in East Malaysia operate on a corporate social responsibility basis, with no airport tax or passenger service charge being imposed on travellers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Plus Expressway Bhd (PLUS) managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Noorizah Abdul Hamid said those who worked on the North South Express-way (NSE) in 1986 – considered one of the country’s first major privatisated projects – had benefited from the experience in terms of knowledge transfer.

She said locals learned from the foreign consultants working on the project.
“This gave them international exposure and many are now working overseas,” she said.

Besides shaving off travelling time and cost, the NSE had also provided an economic lifeline to more than 700 traders as well as mobile hawkers operating at its rest and recreation (R&R) areas. As per Plus’ policy of benefiting the local community, only locals who are staying within a 20km radius of the R&R areas are allowed to trade there. “In the early days, traders would hang their produce by the guardrails and not many vehicles stop-ped.

“Because of that, we built the R&Rs so that they have safe and comfortable areas to sell their products. The expressway had also become the main artery around which townships, commercial centres and industrial parks have sprouted.
