2026 Budget: Hoteliers confident of VM2026 success with RM500m boost

KUALA LUMPUR: Hoteliers are confident that Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) will be a great success, following the government's allocation of RM500 million for the campaign under the 2026 Budget.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) president Datin Christina Toh said today the funding, part of an overall RM700 million envelope for the tourism industry, marks a significant increase from last year and underscores the government's focus on the sector.

"The hotel industry faced strong headwinds in 2025, with global economic uncertainty and unpredictable travel trends impacting performance.

"Data for the first eight months of 2025 showed a 3.3 per cent drop in occupancy and a 2.9 per cent decline in average room rates compared with the same period in 2024."

Toh said the tax incentives will strengthen the industry's recovery.

"These include a 100 per cent tax exemption for tour operators on inbound tourism, and tax deductions of up to RM500,000 for the renovation and refurbishment of tourism premises.

"There will also be full exemptions for international incentive trips, conferences and exhibitions verified by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

"The RM1,000 personal tax relief for domestic tourism is also timely, especially with the roll-out of state and national VM2026 campaigns."

She said MAH would continue collaborating with Tourism Malaysia on domestic travel promotions under the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia campaign, with fairs scheduled in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru, Penang and Pahang next year to offer hotel packages and encourage domestic travel.

On workforce development, Toh highlighted the importance of upskilling to meet industry demands.

"Hotels are looking forward to dedicated funding for digital and AI-related training under the RM3 billion allocation under the Human Resource Development Corporation."

She said, however, that the allocations must be managed carefully and disbursed in a timely manner.

"With renewed investment and focus, we are confident the sector is in recovery mode and well positioned to help Malaysia welcome 47 million visitors and generate RM329 billion in tourism receipts in conjunction with VM2026."

Up to 75pc of hotel rooms in Kedah fully booked for Raya period

ALOR STAR: Hotel bookings in Kedah for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations have reached between 60 and 75 per cent occupancy as of yesterday.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Kedah/Perlis chapter chairman Eugene Dass believes the rate could rise further as more outstation Kedahans return home for the festivities and travellers seize the long weekend to holiday.

"As of yesterday, our members reported an occupancy rate of between 60 and 75 per cent for hotels in both Langkawi and mainland Kedah during the Hari Raya period," he said.

"For mainland hotels, most guests are either returning to their hometowns or are regular travellers. Langkawi, on the other hand, is seeing a mix of locals returning to celebrate Hari Raya and tourists visiting for the holiday," he said.

Dass also expressed confidence that the occupancy rate would exceed 75 per cent, citing trends from previous years.

"We expect a higher occupancy, especially with last-minute travellers adding to the demand," he said.

As the festive season approaches, thousands of outstation Kedahans have already begun their journey back to their hometowns to celebrate.

In addition, the state government has launched the 'Visit Kedah Year 2025' campaign to further boost tourism and promote local attractions.

Malaysia’s travel trade unites for Selangor Super Savers 2025 campaign

Tourism Selangor’s Chua Yee Ling (fourth from left) joins Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners’ Shaharuddin M Saaid (third from left) and Malaysian Association of Hotels Selangor Chapter’s Jasmine Abdullah Heng (third from right) in the launch of Selangor Super Savers 2025

The travel trade has come together in a united, strategic move to bolster Selangor’s tourism sector in line with its Visit Selangor Year 2025 campaign.

The Malaysian Association of Hotels Selangor Chapter (MAHSEL) and the Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO) launched the Selangor Super Savers 2025 (SSS2025) campaign last month, with strong support and participation from the Malaysian Association of Theme Parks & Family Attractions and the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association.

This initiative aligns with Tourism Selangor’s Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025 campaign under the theme, Surprising Selangor, which aims to attract eight million international and domestic visitors to Selangor and generate RM11.7 billion (US$2.6 billion) in tourism receipts.

Jasmine Abdullah Heng, chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels Selangor Chapter, said: “SSS2025 aims to position Selangor as a must-visit destination by fostering collaboration among key industry players, including hotel operators, theme parks, attractions, and shopping malls.

“The campaign offers exclusive promotions and benefits to visitors, enhancing their overall travel experience in the state.”

The campaign was officially launched by Chua Yee Ling, chief executive officer of Tourism Selangor, who also unveiled the campaign’s dedicated digital portal, selangorsupersavers.com. The platform enables travellers to access a range of stay packages, including a minimum of 10 per cent off Best Available Rates, F&B credits, and late check-outs until 15.00.

Additionally, the campaign extends up to 10 per cent discounts on meeting and wedding packages across more than 20 participating hotels in Selangor. Guests staying in any of the participating hotels can also enjoy perks and discounts at participating theme parks and shopping malls in Selangor.

All offers, packages, and discounts are valid for six months from March 1, unless otherwise stated and subject to partners’ terms and conditions.

Shaharuddin M Saaid, executive director of MAHO, shared that the listing on the website is not yet complete, as more participating hotels and malls in Selangor have registered their interest to join the campaign.

He added that both MAHSEL and MAHO are working on Phase 2 of SSS2025, which will see further support from industry players, including airlines. The campaign will run until the end of 2025.

Industry players are encouraged to participate in Phase 2 of the initiative, which is expected to attract additional stakeholders, including airlines, and extend benefits until the end of 2025. This campaign serves as a lead-up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, which aims to welcome 26.1 million tourist arrivals and generate RM97.6 billion in domestic spending.

VM2026 campaign to contribute to nation's collective tourism success

KUALA LUMPUR: The Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, launched on Monday, is set to boost hotel occupancy rates, elevate Malaysia's international profile, and contribute to the nation's collective tourism success.

"The hospitality industry is ready to support the government's aspirations. With tailored packages and an unwavering commitment to excellence, our hotels will be well-prepared to meet the needs of the anticipated influx of tourists by 2026," the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) said in a statement.

The campaign, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, included the unveiling of a vibrant batik-patterned logo, the "Surreal Experiences" theme song, and Malayan Sun Bear mascots named Wira and Manja. Malaysia has set an ambitious target of attracting 35.6 million visitors and generating RM147.1 billion in revenue for VM2026, exceeding the 2025 goals of 31.4 million visitors and RM77 billion in revenue.

Tourism Malaysia stated that VM2026 is designed to boost tourism revenue, enhance Malaysia's global competitiveness in the tourism sector, and solidify its role as a major contributor to the country's gross domestic product.

While MAH applauds the campaign's ambitious targets, it emphasises the critical role of effective marketing to ensure these goals are met.

MAH president Christina Toh expressed optimism, urging the government to match its high aspirations with strong promotional efforts.

"2026 is only 11 months away, which is just around the corner. Before then, it is vital for VM2026 promotional activities to reach global audiences effectively.

"As always, MAH stands ready to collaborate with the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) and other stakeholders to ensure the success of our national tourism efforts," she added.

As a strategic partner of VM2026, MAH remains committed to representing the hospitality industry in driving Malaysia's tourism success.

The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) will host its inaugural domestic tourism fair to mark its 50th Anniversary this year. This two-day consumer event will take place at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, starting on July 6.

Khoo Boo Lim, organising chairperson and vice president of MAH, revealed that the fair would showcase various state tourism pavilions, including Negri Sembilan, Pahang, and Melaka alongside presence by Tourism Malaysia.

Khoo emphasised that the fair would stand out from others in the marketplace with its exclusive focus on the inbound sector.

MAH envisions turning this fair into an annual event and expanding its reach beyond Kuala Lumpur, pending support from its members.

The event is expected to feature over 200 exhibitors from across the hospitality spectrum and attract over 10,000 visitors.

Khoo encouraged members to take the opportunity to promote their properties, especially in areas that are off the beaten track, as well as provide consumers with competitive rates.

More than 2,500 room vouchers will be distributed to visitors with any purchases made at the event.

Christina Toh, MAH president, highlighted at a press conference that participating hotels would present attractive value propositions tailored for Malaysians. These may include room-and-breakfast packages and discounted rates for second room purchases.

Promosi pelancongan negara perlu peruntukan lebih besar

AZIZ Hassan (empat dari kanan) dan Christina Toh (tiga dari kanan) ketika hadir pada Majlis Pelancaran Karnival MAH Negeri Sembilan Food Festival 2023 dan Promosi Jualan Sempena Ramadan di Port Dickson, semalam.-UTUSAN/MOHD. SHAHJEHAN MAAMIN.

Malaysia pushes for expanded visa-on-arrival facility

Malaysia’s tourism, arts and culture minister, Tiong King Sing, recently called on the Home Ministry to look into expanding visa-on-arrival (VOA) for all countries in order to remain competitive with other regional and global destinations.

This includes Malaysia’s traditional top two medium-haul inbound destinations, China and India.

Supporting the minister’s call to introduce VOA facilities, Christina Toh, president of Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), shared: “It is crucial for us to draw more visitors into the country with easier access and welcoming procedures especially now at the time when tourism industry worldwide seems to be experiencing a universal reset that resulted in a more level playing field for all destinations.”

She explained that the current strict visa requirements have deterred many potential travellers from visiting Malaysia, adding that although it is important to maintain the country’s immigration policies, there is also a need “to adapt them to favourable market trends so as to not lose out on great opportunities”.

In addition, with China having reopened its borders, the industry is anticipating “a large influx in tourism and Malaysia stands to lose a lot of potential arrivals” with the existing visa process.

“MAH hopes that by giving visitors this option, it will encourage more arrivals into the country by eliminating the cost and difficulties that comes with visa applications,” said Toh.

Mint Leong, deputy president, Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association, is also in agreement, saying that it is “a great strategy to speed up tourism recovery” and one that will improve the country’s economy.

If implemented, there would be a spike in tourism arrivals; Malaysia’s “airports and tourism players have the resources to handle this”, said Leong.

Outbound operator Suka Travel & Tours’ director, Adam Kamal, noted that if the VOA takes effect, it may result in other countries reciprocating, thus allowing “Malaysians to have the same facility to enter their countries.

He added: “This will (then) help boost outbound travel to those countries.”

Tawaran Menarik Penebusan E-Baucar Oleh Pusat-Pusat Penginapan Di Bawah Pelan Pemulihan Pelancongan 2022

Malaysia Tourism Council tackles labour crunch

To minimise the acute manpower shortage in the travel and hospitality industry, Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) has devised a plan to share with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, in the hope that the ministry will take it up with the relevant government agencies.

MTC president, Uzaidi Udanis, shared with TTG Asia that the council had a meeting with travel and tourism players two weeks ago and several strategies were devised for short- and mid-term solutions to cover the transport, hospitality, F&B and retail industry.

Short-term solutions included attracting foreign interns to gain industry exposure in Malaysia and encouraging students to pursue tourism and hospitality courses upon completing their secondary education. He pointed out that hospitality and tourism institutions in Malaysia were having difficulties with recruitment.

On the manpower shortage, Zahira Tahir, founder and CEO, Universal Holidays, also shared that the problem was acute in the hospitality industry across all hotels – regardless of star ratings – throughout the country.

Due to the labour crunch, many had not been operating at full capacity, she said. Currently, it is the peak season for tourists from India and Middle East markets, domestic demand is high and many Singaporeans visit on the weekends too.

Universal Holidays had to rearrange itineraries according to room availability. She explained: “When we can’t get rooms in Genting, we do Genting as a day trip. When there are no rooms in Kuala Lumpur, we develop the itinerary with another destination first.”

Zahira also highlighted on the shortage of private vehicles to ferry tourists around as suppliers were short of drivers while some had reduced their inventory.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Association of Hotels had reached out to the Human Resources Ministry to expedite the work permits of foreign workers, but had not received a response, reported The Star recently.

Malaysia hotels make Covid testing easier for guests

The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) in collaboration with digital health service provider, DOC2US, will provide travellers and guests at member hotels with a one-stop solution for Covid-19 testing requirements through the latter’s virtual Rapid Test Kit Intelligent System (RTKis).

Guests who book a stay at MAH participating member hotels can opt to add RTKis, which will be given to them upon check-in. The process is supervised by professional healthcare providers, and results are uploaded to the Public Health Laboratory Information System (SIMKA) integrated with MySejahtera – where travellers can also access the free Virtual Health Advisory services provided by DOC2US.

The Virtual Health Advisory is a digital hotline made available online for guests. At present, it is being introduced in some hotels in Negri Sembilan and will commence to hotels in other states later.

Currently, more than 20 MAH member hotels have signed up to offer RTKis, and are in the process of adoption.

MAH president N Subramaniam said: “While the hotel industry has yet to record significant increases in occupancy since the transition to endemic phase, we are keen to outline our commitment to elevate the travelling experience of visitors and steer the country towards endemicity by adding value to our existing in-house healthcare services through digital healthcare.”

CEO and co-founder of DOC2US, Raymond Choy, said in a press release: “The tourism and travel industry was the hardest hit during the pandemic. As a digital healthcare service provider, there are certainly more areas we can cover in order to help the tourism and hotel industry regain their footing. By starting with RTKis and Virtual Health Advisory for travellers, we can reassure them of our health and safety standards.”

Choy added that the Covid test can be conducted “conveniently and comfortably” in the hotel room within 24 hours of the guest’s arrival. “It is safe, secure and credible,” he said.

An influx of two million visitors is expected to enter Malaysia as the tourism industry recovers from Covid-19. The partnership between MAH and DOC2US is expected to facilitate travellers and make testing procedures convenient and accessible upon arrival and throughout their stay.

Resume Cuti-Cuti Malaysia By Saving Up To RM100 With These Special Langkawi Hotel Deals

PUTRAJAYA, 17 September 2021 – It is time to resume our holiday plans as Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and Shopee Malaysia, are relaunching the “Jom Cuti-Cuti Malaysia! Experience Malaysia Like Never Before” campaign, which features special hotel deals in Langkawi beginning 16 September 2021.

This comes on the heels of the announcement that Langkawi will reopen to fully vaccinated domestic tourists as part of the government's travel bubble initiatives. Malaysians can now redeem an RM50 e-voucher for a 2-days-1-night (2D1N) stay at one to three-star rated hotels, or an RM100 e-voucher for a 2D1N stay at four to five-star rated hotels in Langkawi valid until 31st December 2021.

Dato’ Hj. Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia said, “The announcement by the government on the reopening of Langkawi through domestic tourism bubble is truly long-awaited news for everyone in the industry.

The “Jom Cuti-Cuti Malaysia!” campaign serves as one of our efforts in encouraging Malaysians to have the confidence to travel once again, albeit while taking extra precautions. This pilot project is important in reviving Malaysia’s tourism supply chain, all of which were severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Yap Lip Seng, CEO of MAH shared, “We understand that many are eager to travel after a prolonged period of movement restrictions. This campaign provides a great incentive for Malaysians to do so. Rest assured that all parties involved have taken the necessary precautions to provide as safe a travel experience as possible for everyone. Look out for MAH’s very own “Clean & Safe Malaysia” certified hotels for added assurance, we are ready to welcome you back.”

Meanwhile, Kenneth Soh, Senior Manager (Marketing) of Shopee Malaysia said, “We are always striving to empower local communities, and in this case the hoteliers and other industry players involved, starting with those on Pulau Langkawi. Malaysians can find offers on our platform for hotels at various price points, to accommodate tourists at all budget levels. We will also activate a specially curated search for hotel offers in Langkawi, to further ease the purchasing process of those keen on visiting the beautiful island. Although there is still a long road ahead, we believe this is a pragmatic first step for the industry to bounce back in a safe manner.”

Tourism activities and attractions at the resort island are expected to resume, subject to strict standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the National Security Council (NSC) from 16 September onwards. As announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH), those planning to visit Langkawi are required to undergo a COVID-19 test prior to their arrival. Tourists are advised to follow the latest tourism travelling SOP on NSC and MOH websites before travelling.

On top of hotel deals in Langkawi, the campaign also features hotels from other states across the country. The “Jom Cuti-Cuti Malaysia! Experience Malaysia Like Never Before” campaign was launched in December last year through Tourism Malaysia’s Stimulus Recovery Plan, together with MAH and Shopee to revive the tourism supply chain economy.
