Life Science To Be Another Tourism Attraction In Sarawak

KUCHING, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- Life Science will be another tourism product which will be developed in Sarawak as the State Government plans to lure more foreign scholars to come and deepen their knowledge on the subject.

Sarawak Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said a centre to be named after famous naturalist Alfred Wallace will be set up here as part of the efforts to promote the State among life science scholars.

Speaking to represent Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to officiate the Sarawak Tourism Hornbill Awards Gala Night here yesterday, he said the Alfred Wallace Centre will be linked with an earlier established Charles Darwin Centre based in London.

"In other words, those who have been to the Charles Darwin Centre in London will have to go to the (proposed) Alfred Wallace Centre in Kuching (to learn more about life science)," he said. He said the proposed centre will be one of the government's continuous efforts to make Sarawak as a premier tourism destination in the country.

Abang Johari said his ministry had drawn out a road map in tandem to the national target to lure 35 million tourists to the country by 2020. "Probably we could bring about 20 to 30 percent of the targetted number to Sarawak," he added.
