UNWTO digs deeper to uncover more top tourism villages

Following two successful editions of its hunt for the world’s most outstanding tourism villages that are able to drive rural development and local well-being, UNWTO has opened its third call for applications to its Best Tourism Villages initiative.

Launched in 2021, the initiative is one of the pillars of UNWTO Tourism for Rural Development Programme. It has recognised more than 70 tourism villages from almost 40 countries. Qualification is determined by an independent advisory board based on a set of criteria covering nine areas, including Cultural and Natural Resources; Economic Sustainability; Tourism Development and Value Chain Integration; and Health, Safety, and Security.

Here in Asia, the tourism villages of Malaysia’s Batu Puteh; Philippines’ Bojo; Japan’s Miyama; Indonesia’s Nglanggeran; India’s Pochampally; South Korea’s The Purple Island, Ungok and Pyeongsa-ri; China’s Xidi, Yucun, Dazhai and Jingzhu; and Vietnam’s Thรกi Hแบฃi were awarded the recognition over the last two years.

Besides recognising tourism villages that meet all nine stringent requirements, the initiative also encompasses an Upgrade Programme, which helps villages just shy of making the cut to address gaps identified in the evaluation process; and the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO Network, which brings representatives of both recognised villages and those in the Upgrade Programme together to trade experiences and good practices.

UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Tourism can make a real difference for rural communities, delivering jobs, supporting businesses and celebrating and protecting traditions. Through Best Tourism Villages, UNWTO is recognising those rural destinations that committed to making tourism a pillar of opportunity and well-being.”

UNWTO’s Members States can present up to eight villages through their National Tourism Administrations (NTAs) and via this form Application-Form-EN-2023.docx (live.com)

Applications will close on June 23, 2023, and the winners announced later this year.

Senai Airport welcomes resumption of flights from China

KUALA LUMPUR: Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, a member of MMC Group, has resumed its international flight to China after welcoming the first AirAsia flight that arrived from Guangzhou at 6.55am yesterday.

The three weekly flights between Johor Bahru and Guangzhou is also part of AirAsia's strategy in resuming its international service to China from other hubs in the country. This is followed by the resumption of services from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu to Macao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Kunming.

Chief executive officer Kennedy Ayu said Senai Airport was pleased to have the arrival of 110 passengers from AK1395, which marked the airport's international flight resumption.

"Among the passengers of the China mainland, Johor is well-known for leisure and business and the resumption of this service will give exciting opportunities to both destinations," she said.

AirAsia chief executive officer Riad Asmat said the low-cost airline was proud to be the first airline that connects Johor Bahru to an international destination after the pandemic.

"We will continue to expand our network to and from China in response to the increasing travel demand, especially as the country reopened its borders to tourism this month.

"Since recommencing our operations from China last month, we have flown close to 10,000 Chinese visitors to Malaysia, reaffirming once again that Malaysia is a top destination for Chinese travellers.

"We look forward to working with our stakeholders including Senai International Airport to return our service to pre-pandemic levels, which in turn will support the local tourism and economic sectors as a whole," he said.

AirAsia is offering a 20 per cent discount for flights from Johor Bahru to Guangzhou as well as to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Kuching and Kota Bahru in line with the service resumption.

Ethiopian Airlines sambung semula penerbangan ke Malaysia

PESAWAT Ethiopian Airlines menyambung semula penerbangan ke Malaysia disambut dengan semburan air ketika mendarat di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur Terminal 1, Sepang, Selangor. - FOTO/KAMARIAH KHALIDI

Pahang govt in talks with several airlines to revive Kuantan route

KUANTAN: The Pahang government has initiated talks with several airline companies to revive operations in and out of the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (LTSAS) here to boost tourist arrival.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said that before the Covid-19 pandemic, low-cost carrier AirAsia, Firefly and Malindo Air, since rebranded as Batik Air, used to ply the Kuala Lumpur- Kuantan route.

"Currently, we only have Malaysia Airlines servicing the Kuala Lumpur- Kuantan route and Singapore's low-cost airline Scoot Air servicing the Singapore-Kuantan route, and vice-versa. Talks have begun with several Malaysian airlines companies and we are hoping for progress.

"The Pahang government is trying our best to get the airlines to return and revive the routes which they once served. We understand that some delays could be caused by the airline companies flying the more popular and profitable routes," she told reporters after a welcoming ceremony to receive the first batch of 117 passengers who arrived on Scoot Air's Airbus A320 aircraft at (LTSAS) here today.

Scoot resumed flights to Kuantan on Nov 30 last year after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Operations were suspended last month for aircraft maintenance before resuming today.

The flights, operating three times a week - Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - will depart from Changi Airport.

Leong said commercial carrier SKS Airways, which is currently operating the Subang-Pulau Tioman and Subang- Pulau Redang route is also mulling introducing the LTSAS- Pulau Tioman route in the future.

Meanwhile, she said tourism industry players from Singapore including travel agents and members of the media will be participating in a four-day familiarisation trip to Pahang in June this year.

"Singapore has been Pahang's biggest tourist source country, with a total of 116,220 people arriving last year. The familiarisation trip will allow us to provide updates on the latest tourist attractions and how people could spend their holidays in Pahang.

"Special sessions will be arranged between the travel agents in Pahang and Singapore's tourism industry players so that it will be easier for them to coordinate the holiday trips here instead of getting in touch with agents outside Pahang to visit the state," she said.

Reviving the flights between Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan and vice versa will bring huge relief to the people of the state, including tourists, as many have been left with limited flights daily plying in and out from the LTSAS.

KUDAT: The popular Tip of Borneo will be accessible by the public starting next month after almost a two-year closure to make way for upgrading works.

This was revealed by Tourism, Culture, and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew after she inspected the site recently to monitor the progress of works.

She said that Phase 1 of the upgrading works began on Dec 5, 2021 but due to bad weather and late delivery of building materials to the construction site, it took a longer time to be completed.

Liew said improved facilities included a new covered walkway to replace the existing one, a toilet for persons with disabilities, and a viewing platform.

"The safety of tourists and visitors is of utmost importance. Railings and lamp posts have been installed at the viewing platform.

Phase 2 of the upgrading works, which involves the demolition of the existing structure and the construction of a new visitor's centre, is currently taking place and is expected to be completed in six to 10 months.

The Tip of Borneo or Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, is known for its breathtaking views where the Sulu and South China Seas meet.

The area is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful sunsets, pristine beaches, and cultural attractions.

Tourism Selangor bantu pengusaha pelancongan melalui Festival Ramadan

Memupuk Semangat Memberi Kepada Masyarakat

Plaza Premium combo-lounge opens at KLIA

Plaza Premium Group unveiled its brand-new combo lounge at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 recently, combining both The Plaza Premium First and the Plaza Premium Lounge under one roof.

KLIA is the second airport to feature this new combo lounge concept, almost three months after Plaza Premium Group first introduced it at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport last December.

With the concept requiring an area of 1,500-2,000m2, the biggest challenge in expanding to other airports in the region and beyond was getting the space to do so at matured airports, shared Song Hoi-See, CEO and founder of Plaza Premium Group.

As the current sole partner, Singapore Airlines’ business class and first-class passengers have complimentary access to The Plaza Premium First lounge at KLIA. Song targets to increase this to at least 10 similar partnerships with foreign airlines flying into KLIA Terminal 1 by year end.

Plaza Premium First and Plaza Premium Lounge offer different dining experiences to cater to their guests’ needs. Plaza Premium First serves a curated experience with an ร  la carte menu while Plaza Premium Lounge’s offers a buffet menu.

Both offer dedicated spaces to suit travellers’ needs, be it to relax, dine, socialise or work. There are also private rooms for families and for corporate use.

Open to travellers on a pay-per-use basis, Plaza Premium First’s rate is 202 ringgit (US$45) per person for a two-hour lounge use while Plaza Premium Lounge charges 146 ringgit per person for the same amount of time.

Currently, Plaza Premium Group operates its lounges in more than 70 international airports globally, with another lounge opened earlier this month at Adelaide International.

In Malaysia, it operates seven lounges with plans to expand in East Malaysia.

The group is also looking to expand its products and offerings to Miami, Florida and Denver in the US, Ching Tao and Chongqing in China, Abu Dhabi, Amman and Jeddah.

Musa, Dr. Ammar calon layak ganti Zainuddin: Siapa bakal KP Tourism Malaysia baharu?

Established in 1997, IAGTO's membership comprises over 2,413 golf resorts, hotels, golf courses, inbound operators, airlines, tourist boards, approved media, and business partners in 91 countries, including more than 672 specialist golf tour operators in 61 countries.

IAGTO’s operators control over 87% of golf holiday packages sold worldwide and a turnover of more than USD 2.5 billion per year. Currently, of IAGTO’s 672 golf tour operators, some 388 in 51 countries sell Asian golf destinations.

KUANTAN: Club Med Borneo Kota Kinabalu in Sabah will open by the end of next year.

The 17ha eco-friendly beachfront resort in Kuala Penyu will have 400 rooms, including 40 suites, and is about 90 minutes by road from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

Club Med Singapore and Malaysia general manager Olivier Monceau said Club Med's expansion in Malaysia through the opening of the second resort was timely and exciting.

"At the moment, the focus is on when we plan to open.

"Hopefully, we can stick to the opening date at the end of 2024, which will be a great achievement.

"The tourism market is recovering, especially after the lengthy lockdown, and we are moving in the right direction.

"The resort will be built to meet a top environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

"The focus will be on the environment and the people, including proper waste management and reducing carbon footprints," he said at Club Med Cherating recently.

Monceau said the resort in Sabah, a collaboration with owners Golden Sands Beach Resort City, would be a four-trident resort, with a five-trident exclusive collection on top of added services to personalise guests' stay.

Tridents is the "star" ratings at Club Med.

It was reported in 2019 that Club Med's first green resort in Sabah was supposed to have opened by late last year before the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in delays.

Meanwhile, Monceau said the Kota Kinabalu resort's design was inspired by local cultures that blended with the rainforest.

"The resort will offer plenty of activities that encourage guests to preserve the location's beauty and discover local gems.

"I think each and every location (Club Med) has its own beauty and uniqueness… you might want to experience scuba diving in Sabah, which you cannot get in Cherating.

"Guests can experience local culture at the resort without stepping out, including attending workshops and culinary classes.

"For example, at Club Med Bali, we host the Balinese Day with the famous kecak fire-and-dance show and workshops.

"At Club Med Phuket, guests can learn to cook Thai food, learn a traditional dance or take up Muay Thai (Thai boxing)."
