Malaysia tourism off to strong start

Malaysia recorded a strong start to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, welcoming 10.64 million international visitors in the first quarter of the year, a 5.4 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. The achievement marks the second consecutive year the country has surpassed the 10 million-arrival mark in the first quarter.

Tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing said the growth reflected Malaysia’s continued appeal as a regional tourism hub despite ongoing global economic and geopolitical uncertainties.

“The performance of visitor arrivals for the first quarter of 2026 can still be considered good,” Tiong said, noting that rising airfares and disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict had affected several tourism markets.

According to ministry statistics, February recorded a historic milestone with 3.47 million international arrivals, the highest monthly figure recorded by Malaysia. The surge was largely driven by increased travel during the Chinese New Year festive season.

Singapore remained Malaysia’s largest source market with more than 5.14 million arrivals, while China emerged as a key growth driver with 1.41 million visitors, up 25.2 per cent year-on-year. Thailand, Brunei, Australia and the United Kingdom also posted growth, with Australia recording an increase of 11.4 per cent.

Tiong noted that South-east Asian and East Asian markets continued to underpin Malaysia’s tourism recovery, while Europe showed encouraging momentum. “The number of European visitors to Malaysia in the first quarter for the first time exceeded 500,000,” he shared.

To support further growth, Malaysia expanded its international air connectivity with 20 new scheduled routes and six charter services launched during the quarter, adding 95 weekly international flights.

The minister also stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships with global tourism and aviation players ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

Earlier this year, Tiong led Malaysia’s delegation to the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cebu and ITB Berlin 2026, where discussions were held with major industry players including Lufthansa Group, Expedia, Airbnb and Marriott International.

At ITB Berlin, Tiong met representatives from Lufthansa City Center International’s travel sales network to explore cooperation to advance European and global markets. The organisation has around 320 member travel agencies worldwide.

Malaysia’s tourism campaign has also been extended until December 31, 2027, with the government focusing on high-growth markets, enhanced connectivity and longer stays to boost visitor spending and strengthen the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

MAHB optimistic on outlook, urgers greater aviation-tourism collaboration to boost passenger traffic

BANGKOK: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), which remains optimistic on its outlook this year despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia, has called for greater cooperation across the aviation and tourism ecosystem to increase passenger traffic and support Malaysia's aviation ambitions.

Its managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said airport operators, airlines, regulators and tourism-related agencies coming together and pulling in the same direction will be crucial in sustaining industry resilience and ensuring the success of the Visit Malaysia 2026 premier national tourism campaign amid current global challenges.

Mohd Izani said close cooperation among stakeholders has become increasingly important as the nation celebrates Visit Malaysia 2026, particularly in ensuring seamless travel experience, stable airline operations and stronger international connectivity.

"We remain positive (and) despite the crisis, Visit Malaysia 2026 itself is already a free promotion for us," he told Bernama on the sidelines of the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly, Conference and Exhibition here.

He reiterated that all parties have to work together, whereby airlines also have to play their role, not just promoting airlines but Malaysia as well.

He said MAHB currently chairs a quarterly working group involving multiple agencies and stakeholders to coordinate preparations and resolve operational issues related to Visit Malaysia 2026.

Among the agencies involved are the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Ministry of Transport (MOT), Ministry of Finance (MOF), Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Immigration Department and airlines.

"In the meetings, we discuss how to promote Malaysia and resolve issues together. It works quite well," he said.

Mohd Izani said one of the key achievements resulting from the collaboration was the removal of certain customs inspection bottlenecks at immigration checkpoints, which helped improve passenger flow at KL International Airport (KLIA).

He added that the authorities had agreed to implement Green Lane initiatives to facilitate smoother arrival processes for travellers.

"Initially there was some resistance, but in the end you get the power of collaboration," he said.

At the same time, MAHB is working on an airside transfer system connecting T1 and T2, allowing transit passengers to move between terminals without having to clear immigration and customs repeatedly.

Mohd Izani reiterated the initiative involves close coordination with multiple stakeholders, including the Immigration Department, Customs Department, airlines and ground handlers.

"We promised the MOT that we will get it done by the end of the year," he said.

He added that part of the project could be financed through the Airport Development Fund (ADF), which supports airport efficiency-related improvements across the country.

Impact of West Asia

Mohd Izani acknowledged that the ongoing West Asia conflict affected passenger movements through Malaysian airports, particularly in March and April.

"In terms of passenger traffic, we experienced a dip for March and April, that is unavoidable. Everybody faced the same impact," he said.

He estimated that some affected passenger segments recorded around a 50 per cent decline during the period compared with earlier projections.

However, he said there were already signs of recovery as airspace restrictions ease and airlines gradually resume services, although frequencies have yet to fully return to previous levels.

"For the past few weeks, we can see airlines coming back already," he said.

At the same time, MAHB sees opportunities arising from changing travel patterns, particularly as some passengers shift away from Middle Eastern transit routes and opt for destinations within Asia instead.

"People may not go to the Middle East, but they are going to China, Japan and other destinations in the region and that is positive for us," he said.

Mohd Izani said MAHB is also positioning KLIA as an alternative transit hub for passengers travelling between Asia and Europe.

He said several airlines are already reviewing connectivity options through Kuala Lumpur, including the return of German carrier Lufthansa to KLIA.

"Passengers used to transit through the Middle East to Europe or the United States. Perhaps now they can fly through Kuala Lumpur instead," he said.

Airline growth momentum

Despite the uncertain global environment, Mohd Izani said MAHB remains optimistic about achieving its target of attracting 15 new airlines this year.

"We are still optimistic because the 15 airlines are from different parts of the world," he said.

He added that interest from Chinese carriers continue to remain strong, with growing demand for routes into both Kuala Lumpur and secondary Malaysian cities.

According to MAHB, 22 new routes and services had been launched so far this year by both new and existing airlines, including several Chinese carriers operating into Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Bahru.

To date, six new airlines have come onboard, namely Aero Dili (KLIA), Air Algerie (KLIA), Shandong Airlines (KLIA), Chongqing Airlines (Kota Kinabalu International Airport), Chongqing Airlines (Penang International Airport (PEN), Spring Airlines (PEN) and Juneyao Airlines (Tawau Airport).

Mohd Izani said despite current challenges, the aviation sector remains in better conditions than that experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"At least now operations can continue," he said.

MAHB currently manages 39 airports across Malaysia of varying sizes, including five international airports, as well as one airport in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Penang International Airport recorded 741,183 passenger movements in January, making it one of Malaysia's busiest aviation hubs after Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Johor's Senai International Airport is also gaining traction as a key gateway to the south.

Batik Air chief executive officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the new service reflects the airline's commitment to strengthening Malaysia's domestic air network in response to evolving travel patterns.

"These two cities play important roles in Malaysia's tourism, trade and business landscape, and this service brings them closer together while making travel more seamless for passengers," he said in a statement.

Looking ahead, the airline said enhancing domestic connectivity remains a key priority in supporting the country's Visit Malaysia 2026-driven tourism ambitions, as well as economic growth.

Chandran said Batik Air will continue exploring opportunities to expand routes that improve accessibility between key regions nationwide, with the Penang-Johor Bahru service marking another step towards a more connected domestic network.

SEPANG —Tourism Malaysia is delighted to welcome the inaugural flight of AirAsia Malaysia, AK471, from Batam, Indonesia, which arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 today at 11.15 a.m. The arrival was officially received by representatives from Tourism Malaysia alongside partners from AirAsia and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The launch of this new route marks a significant milestone in strengthening connectivity between Indonesia’s emerging second-tier cities and Malaysia. This strategic expansion not only enhances AirAsia’s regional network but also serves as a vital platform to boost visitor arrivals from the Riau Archipelago. Indonesia remains one of Malaysia’s primary tourism markets, alongside other priority markets such as China, India, and Australia.

The inaugural flight carried 180 passengers, achieving a strong full load factor on the 180-seat capacity Airbus A320 on their first arrival. The passengers comprised a diverse mix of travellers, predominantly from Indonesia, along with visitors from other nations including China and Singapore. The route operates daily, with flights departing Kuala Lumpur for Batam at 8.05 a.m. and return flights departing Batam at 8.45 a.m. (WIB).

Welcoming this new chapter in regional connectivity, Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal bin Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, commended the aviation industry for its continued commitment to strengthening travel links.

“As we build momentum towards VM2026, every new flight route serves as a gateway to our collective success. Our partnership with the aviation industry reflects strong confidence in Malaysia’s tourism attractions. Improved accessibility remains a key component of our strategy to position Malaysia as a preferred destination for visitors from Southeast Asia,” he said.

“We are pleased to launch this new route connecting Batam and Kuala Lumpur, which further reinforces our commitment to enhancing regional connectivity between Indonesia and Malaysia. Batam is an important gateway within the Riau Islands, and this new service will provide affordable connectivity for both leisure and business travellers while supporting tourism growth in line with VM2026,” said Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, General Manager of AirAsia Malaysia.

In 2025, visitor arrivals from Indonesia to Malaysia reached 4.3 million representing a 2.9 per cent increase compared to 2024. Today’s launch of this new route is expected to further boost visitor arrivals to Malaysia throughout 2026. This new direct connection highlights the robust collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and the aviation sector. Both organisations remain committed to ensuring the success of the VM2026 campaign.

The return flight LH 705 takes off at 11:55pm in Kuala Lumpur and lands at 6:00am the following day in the Rhine-Main metropolis.

These flight times are optimally coordinated with Lufthansa's worldwide network from Frankfurt and offer travelers ideal connection possibilities.

The flight will be operated by the new Boeing 787, the most modern and efficient aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet.

Jens Ritter, chief executive officer of Lufthansa Airlines, said: "With the new nonstop connection to Kuala Lumpur and the deployment of our state-of-the-art Dreamliner, we are creating ideal conditions to participate in the growth in Southeast Asia.

"The innovative Allegris cabin offers our guests the highest comfort and highlights underscore our premium aspiration to offer both leisure travelers and business travelers a first-class travel experience."

Malaysia: Attractive destination for tourism and business

Lufthansa said Malaysia is a very popular destination for both leisure travellers and business travellers.

"With 42.2 million visitors in 2025, Malaysia was the most visited country in Southeast Asia. The country's cultural diversity, natural beauty, and historical significance make it a unique travel destination."

Malaysia is also economically strong and growing rapidly, it added.

Germany is Malaysia's most important trading partner in the European Union, and over 700 German companies are based in Malaysia.

Lufthansa sees significant growth potential in the region and is specifically focusing on the development of this destination.

From the Lufthansa Group home markets (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy), Lufthansa will be the only airline with nonstop flights to Malaysia.

This makes Kuala Lumpur the third Lufthansa Group destination in Southeast Asia, alongside Bangkok, Singapore and Phuket, it said.
