PATA highlights sustainable and inclusive tourism at World Tourism Conference 2025

 

PATA showcased its commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism at the World Tourism Day and World Tourism Conference 2025, held in Melaka, Malaysia, from September 27 to 29. 

The event was officiated by Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, deputy prime minister of Malaysia; Ab Rauf Yusoh, chief minister of Melaka; Tiong King Sing, minister of culture, arts and tourism Malaysia; and Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general, UN Tourism. The conference, held under the theme Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, focused on tourism’s potential to drive economic, social and environmental progress. 

During the session People-Centred Tourism: Unlocking Opportunities through Education, Innovation and Investments, moderated by Antonio López de Ávila of UN Tourism, PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid joined panellists Amran Hamzah, Phillip Seiji Vincent, David Bardolet and Aradhana Khowala to discuss how investment in human capital, particularly youth and women, can strengthen resilience, equity and future readiness in tourism. The panel also examined how targeted investment can foster entrepreneurship, accelerate digitalisation and support sustainable development across destinations. 

PATA continues to place sustainability and social responsibility at the centre of its work, supporting long-term transformation in destinations, businesses and communities across the Asia-Pacific through initiatives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Its programmes cover food and plastic waste reduction, climate resilience, digital transformation and social inclusion, while also developing the skills of tourism stakeholders at all levels. 

The association recently launched a 2025 World Tourism Day campaign highlighting projects from members, partners and stakeholders that advance sustainable transformation through education, governance, innovation and climate action.

7th Edition Of World Tourism Conference (WTC) Convenes In Melaka

 

MELAKA, 28TH SEPTEMBER | The Deputy Secretary-General (Tourism) of Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), YBrs. Mr. Chua Choon Hwa, welcomed delegates with a recap of yesterday’s World Tourism Day (WTD) sessions and set the stage for the 7th WTC. He highlighted the dynamic programme ahead, featuring discussions on inclusive tourism economies, the scaling of sustainable practices and a tourism future shaped by digital technologies.

YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, opened the conference with a keynote plenary address tracing Melaka’s transformation into a sustainable and innovative tourism destination. He underscored how the city thrives on its multiethnic, multicultural heritage while safeguarding both tangible and intangible traditions.

Building on this, YB Datuk Khaidirah binti Datuk Abu Zahar, Deputy EXCO for Investment, Industry and TVET Development, spotlighted Melaka’s UNESCO, inscribed treasures, ‘dondang sayang’, ‘pantun’, ‘silat’ and the ‘kebaya’, alongside culinary icons such as ‘asam pedas’ and ‘dodol’. She highlighted the city’s liveability gains, from bicycle lanes and pedestrian-friendly streets to the revitalised Melaka Riverfront that remains the city’s tourism lifeline. YB Datuk Khaidirah also underscored the contributions of youth volunteers and a comprehensive heritage management plan that unites local communities and institutions as initiatives that have earned Melaka international recognition, including the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award 2024–2026.

Finally, H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, delivered a compelling special address on tourism’s role as an engine of shared prosperity. Citing the sector’s nearly 10 percent share of global GDP and ASEAN’s 100 million tourist arrivals, he affirmed that growth and sustainability are not competing goals but twin pillars of progress. Dr. Kao framed ASEAN’s commitment around six guiding values consisting of Peace, Prosperity, Planet, People, Partnerships and Potential. He too urged member states to prioritise sustainability, inclusivity and digital innovation, emphasising that economic vitality and environmental stewardship can and must advance together.

MELAKA: The 7th World Tourism Conference (WTC), held in conjunction with World Tourism Day 2025 here, marked a pivotal moment in advancing tourism as a catalyst for positive change, resilience and sustainable development worldwide, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism). 

In a statement, UN Tourism said that under the theme Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, the global gathering underscored the vital importance of the sector as leaders, policymakers, industry experts and local communities came together to shape a sustainable future for tourism. 

Hosted by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry in collaboration with UN Tourism, the event showcased Malaysia's rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes and commitment to sustainable tourism. 

In his official message, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described tourism as a "powerful driver of transformation" that creates jobs, fuels economies and builds cultural bridges. 

"Yet, it must be sustainable to protect the very places and communities it celebrates. Let's harness tourism as a force for resilience, sustainability and shared progress," he said. 

The statement noted that the celebrations in Melaka featured a series of activities, including high-level panel discussions and cultural showcases focused on sustainable practices and strategies to build industry resilience.

Among the key areas of focus were investing in education and skills, accelerating innovation and digital transformation, supporting local economies, and strengthening cultural exchange. 

"The WTC also provided a collaborative platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for sustainable tourism development, focusing on resilience, inclusivity and environmental stewardship. 

"Key sessions explored digital transformation in tourism, community-based tourism models and climate-neutral travel solutions, aligning with the theme Tourism and Sustainable Transformation," it said.

PM: Malaysia eyes green, world-class tourism

MELAKA: Malaysia is committed to developing a world-class, sustainable and resilient tourism industry by prioritising environmental preservation and empowering communities, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 

He said the nation's biodiversity and unique strengths must be harnessed to attract global visitors without harming natural heritage. 

"Malaysia is one of 12 mega-biodiversity countries in the world, with more than 15,000 plant species, 175,000 fauna species, tropical rainforests, mangroves and coral reefs. 

"Protecting the environment is a global trust, and when ecosystems thrive, they become natural attractions for tourists." 

His speech was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at the launch of World Tourism Day and the 7th World Tourism Conference in Banda Hilir here. 

Present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh; Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing; and UN World Tourism Organisation secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili.

Anwar said nature-based tourism remains a priority, along with adventure, Muslim-friendly, medical and wellness tourism. 

He added that educational travel, business events and digital nomad hubs are potential growth areas. 

The government is promoting recycling models and revenue-sharing mechanisms to channel tourism earnings back into maintaining infrastructure and ecosystems, he added. 

On carbon emissions, he said aviation accounts for nearly half of the global tourism industry's direct emissions. 

"Malaysia's first biomass-based sustainable aviation fuel plant is expected to begin operations in 2027, creating green industries and jobs." 

Anwar said that empowering grassroots communities is central to sustainable tourism. 

He cited Batu Puteh in Sabah and Mersing in Johor as examples of successful eco-tourism and coastal tourism initiatives supported by government, non-governmental organisations and international partners. 

"As Asean chair in 2025, Malaysia will push for smoother travel, harmonised standards and stronger regional sustainability frameworks," he said.

LANGKAWI: More than 3,000 delegates from 159 countries are expected to converge in Melaka for World Tourism Day (WTD) and the World Tourism Conference (WTC), scheduled to take place from Sept 27 to 29.

Both events, themed 'Tourism and Sustainable Transformation', are set to enhance Malaysia's standing as a global tourism hub.

Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (Planning) Shahrin Mokhtar said the two high-impact international events would help strengthen the country's tourism industry.

"In January, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) successfully hosted the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025 in Johor, marking a pivotal moment in promoting Malaysia on the world stage.

"Following that, WTD and WTC will take place in Melaka this September," he said during an engagement session and symbolic flag handover ceremony for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, held at Parkroyal Langkawi Resort here today.

The ceremony was officiated by the state's Economic Planning Division director, Junaidi Abdul Rani.

First introduced by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980, World Tourism Day is celebrated on Sept 27 each year. It aims to recognise the contributions and significance of tourism in shaping global social, cultural, political and economic values, as well as its role in the future of sustainable energy.

Tahun Melawat Melaka 2024 tarik 15 juta pelancong, jana hasil RM12.68 bilion - Ab Rauf

 

MELAKA: Tahun Melawat Melaka 2024 (TMM2024) berjaya merekodkan kehadiran 15 juta pelancong, menepati sasaran ditetapkan kerajaan negeri.

Serentak itu, Melaka turut berjaya menjana hasil keseluruhan RM12.68 bilion menerusi pelbagai aktiviti pelancongan sepanjang penganjuran TMM2024 sejak Januari tahun lalu.

Berikutan kejayaan berkenaan, Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, berkata TMM akan diteruskan sehingga 2026 sejajar dengan Tahun Melawat Malaysia yang bakal dianjurkan tahun depan.

Beliau berterima kasih dan menghargai kerjasama serta komitmen semua jabatan, agensi, badan bukan kerajaan (NGO), pengamal media serta semua pihak yang menyumbang tenaga menjayakan TMM2024.

"Usaha ini selaras dengan pemilihan Melaka sebagai tuan rumah Hari Pelancongan Sedunia (WTD) dan Persidangan Pelancongan Sedunia (WTC) 2025, disusuli Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2026 (VM2026)," katanya pada majlis perasmian Ambang Tahun Baharu 2025 dan pelancaran WTD 2025 di Banda Hilir, di sini malam tadi.

Perasmian disempurnakan oleh Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam dan turut dihadiri EXCO Kanan Perumahan, Kerajaan Tempatan, Saliran, Perubahan Iklim dan Pengurusan Bencana Melaka, Datuk Rais Yasin serta EXCO Pelancongan, Warisan, Seni dan Budaya negeri, Datuk Abd Razak Abd Rahman.

Yang hadir sama, Pengerusi Kumpulan Media Prima Berhad (Media Prima), Datuk Seri Dr Syed Hussian Aljunid; Ketua Pegawai Operasi Media Prima Omnia, Datuk Mohd Effendi Omar dan Pengarang Kumpulan Jabatan Berita dan Ehwal Semasa, Rangkaian Televisyen Media Prima, Azhari Muhidin.

Lebih 50,000 pengunjung membanjiri Banda Hilir bagi memeriahkan sambutan itu yang diakhiri dengan pertunjukan bunga api.

Ab Rauf berkata, kerajaan negeri juga berterima kasih kepada Kementerian Pelancongan, Seni dan Budaya (MOTAC) atas kepercayaan kepada Melaka sebagai tuan rumah sempena WTD dan WTC 2025 pada September depan.

"Kalau dahulu, kita bergiat aktif mempromosikan Melaka sehingga ke luar negara, sekarang sebagai kota pelancongan terhebat, kita membawa dunia ke Melaka pula," katanya.

Melaka dipilih sebagai tuan rumah WTD dan WTC 2025 mewakili Malaysia selepas Pertubuhan Pelancongan Sedunia (UNWTO) tahun lalu sepakat memilih Malaysia sebagai lokasi penganjuran program berprestij itu tahun ini.

AYER KEROH: Kerajaan negeri akan meneruskan kerjasama strategik dengan Kumpulan Media Prima Berhad (MPB) dalam penganjuran Hari Pelancongan Dunia (WTD) dan Persidangan Pelancongan Dunia (WTC) tahun depan.

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, berkata ia susulan pemilihan Melaka sebagai tuan rumah kepada dua acara berprestij itu yang dijadual diadakan September tahun depan.

"Sudah pasti kita akan meneruskan kerjasama dengan MPB sebagai rakan media rasmi bagi acara berkenaan kerana kerajaan negeri amat berpuas hati dengan komitmen konglomerat media sepanjang penganjuran Tahun Melawat Melaka 2024 (TMM2024).

"Saya menegaskan, MPB berjaya membantu Melaka mempromosikan TMM2024 dan kita mendapat pulangan yang baik menerusi kedatangan pelancong yang ramai.

"Justeru saya harap tahun depan MPB sekali lagi dapat memberikan kerjasama dalam mempromosikan Melaka sebagai tuan rumah WTD dan WTC.... pastinya kerjasama itu akan diteruskan lagi," katanya pada sidang media selepas membentangkan Rang Undang-undang Enakmen Perbekalan 2025 (Bajet) pada Persidangan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Melaka Ke-15 di Seri Negeri, di sini hari ini.

Tahun lalu, kerajaan negeri Melaka menjalinkan kerjasama strategik dengan MPB yang dilantik sebagai rakan media rasmi TMM2024.

Pemilihan berkenaan susulan pengiktirafan MPB sebagai syarikat konglomerat media terbesar dan berpengaruh di negara ini.

Ia juga berdasarkan pengalaman dan kepakaran MPB yang mempunyai operasi bersepadu termasuk rangkaian televisyen, akhbar, radio dan pengiklanan digital, secara tidak langsung membantu kerajaan negeri mempromosikan kempen TMM2024.

Sementara itu, Ab Rauf berkata, kerajaan negeri akan melanjutkan Tahun Melawat Melaka (TMM) untuk tempoh dua tahun lagi sehingga 2026.

Beliau berkata, langkah itu sejajar pemilihan Melaka sebagai tuan rumah WTD dan WTC tahun depan dan disusuli Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

"Bagi mengekalkan momentum semangat TMM2024, kerajaan negeri bersetuju mengekalkan slogan keramat 'Mana Lagi...Melaka Lerr' yang semakin popular," katanya.

Mengulas sektor pelancongan negeri, Ab Rauf berkata, Melaka terus 'mendunia' dengan menganjurkan pelbagai aktiviti melalui 14 sub sektor pelancongan dengan 64 acara sepanjang tahun hadapan.

Katanya, antara aktiviti itu termasuklah Pengkisahan Detik Kemerdekaan Bersama Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Teater Kegemilangan Melaka, Melaka International Mountain Bike Jamboree, Pesta Pantai Melaka dan Melaka International Travel Mart.

Sempena kehadiran penganjuran WTD dan WTC di Melaka pada September tahun depan, kerajaan negeri turut menawarkan diri sebagai tuan rumah pelancaran VM2026.

Melaka tawar diri tuan rumah pelancaran VM2026

 

AYER KEROH: Melaka menawarkan diri sebagai tuan rumah bagi pelancaran rasmi Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) sempena Hari Pelancongan Dunia (WTD) dan Persidangan Pelancongan Dunia (WTC) yang dijadual berlangsung September tahun depan.

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, berkata cadangan itu disuarakan beliau kepada pihak Kementerian Pelancongan, Seni dan Budaya (MOTAC) untuk dibawa kepada perbincangan pada peringkat Kerajaan Persekutuan sejajar kejayaan Melaka dalam pelaksanaan Tahun Melawat Melaka 2024 (TMM 2024) Ketika ini.

"Saya memohon cadangan ini dibawa ke peringkat Persekutuan susulan 151 menteri pelancongan dari seluruh dunia akan berada di Melaka tahun depan, jadi sesuai jika ia dipertimbangkan supaya pelancaran VM2026 diadakan di Melaka sempena WTD dan WTC," katanya selepas menutup Explorace Melaka 2024 di Pusat Dagangan Antarabangsa Melaka (MITC), di sini, hari ini.

Turut hadir, Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Datuk Azhar Arshad; EXCO Sains, Teknologi, Inovasi dan Komunikasi Digital negeri, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan; Timbalannya, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halim dan Pengerusi Pertubuhan Berita Nasional (BERNAMA), Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

Melaka Explorace 2024 yang julung kali diadakan di Melaka itu disertai kira-kira 300 peserta dari seluruh negara yang menjelajah ke seluruh negeri membabitkan tiga daerah iaitu Melaka Tengah, Jasin dan Alor Gajah.

Selain dapat menikmati suasana lokasi pelancongan di negeri bersejarah itu, peserta juga dapat merapatkan silaturahim antara pengamal media dan pada masa sama memberi peluang peserta meneroka sejarah serta khazanah unik di Melaka.

Peserta menyempurnakan misi diberikan secara berjalan kaki, berkenderaan, menaiki beca dan Melaka River Cruise.

Sementara itu, mengulas TMM2024, Ab Rauf berkata, berkata walaupun kempen dan sambutan itu berakhir 31 Disember ini, namun pelbagai program berkaitan aktiviti pelancongan tetap dilaksanakan bagi menyokong dan menjayakan MTD serta WTC.

Katanya, aktiviti terbabit diteruskan menerusi pelbagai program menjurus kepada aktiviti pelancongan dengan pengiktirafan Melaka sebagai tuan rumah kepada kedua-dua acara dunia berprestij itu.

"Melaka akan menggunakan WTD dan WTC ini sebagai platform mempromosikan negeri pada peringkat dunia, selain bersama-sama meraikan VM2026," katanya.

Malaysia expected to generate RM2.3bil from business events and conferences over next three years

 

PUTRAJAYA: Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said Malaysia is expected to generate RM2.3 billion from 2024 to 2026, especially with Melaka hosting World Tourism Day (WTD) in 2025.

Today, Tiong chaired the kickoff meeting to prepare for WTD and World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025, with representatives from the Melaka state government attending to discuss the action plan of the appointed Special Committee.

"From 2024 to 2026, Malaysia is set to host over 156 international business events and conferences; With a high multiplier effect, it is expected to generate an economic impact of RM2.3 billion," he said.

He said Melaka has been assigned to organise WTD, synchronising with the state's plan to host the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) International Triennial WTC in 2025.

"These programmes are expected to gather over 3,000 participants from 159 member countries, including around 500 private sector UNWTO members, Tourism Ministers, National Tourism Organisation Heads, and global tourism industry figures.

"The selection of Melaka as the host for WTD and WTC 2025 signifies recognition of the state government's commitment and leadership in driving tourism development, successfully establishing Melaka as a renowned tourist destination globally," he said.

Tiong said the event's preparation is part of Malaysia's efforts towards implementing the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

Also present, Melaka Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state is honoured for the opportunity to host both international events in 2025.

"Everyone is well aware that Melaka is recognised as a tourist city and a heritage city by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

"There are many tourism-related contents that Melaka can provide, attracting and captivating more who come.

"With the organisation of Visit Melaka Year in 2024 and followed by the WTD and WTC in 2025, it will demonstrate that besides the contributions of incoming investments, the tourism industry can also contribute to the people's economy in a better condition," he said.

Both the internationally acclaimed event – the WTD and WTC 2025 are scheduled for Sep 27-29, 2025.

World Tourism Conference 2022: Tourism Futures Reimagined @ Sabah, Malaysia ( 28 ~ 30 November 2022 )

 

28 November 2022 – The World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2022 jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia in partnership with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Sabah State Government runs from 28-30 November 2022 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Now in its 6th edition, this year’s conference brings together 1,000 delegates from more than 60 countries to reconnect and reassess tourism’s recovery in the aftermath of the worldwide pandemic. 

Alongside UNWTO officials, the conference features some 30 expert speakers comprising government policy makers, industry leaders and leading academicians in championing thought leadership on tourism futures and strategies driving tourism’s recovery and resilience in a post-pandemic world.

They include the State Minister, Ministry of Tourism Maldives, Dr. Ahmed Salih; Regional General Manager, Tourism Australia, Mr. Brent Anderson; Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Stout, USA, Prof. Jafar Jafari; Co-founder of Traveloka, Indonesia, Mr. Albert; and representatives from some of the world’s most innovative tourism-related companies such as Skift, Tripadvisor, TUI Group and Intrepid Travel.

“However, there is also a great window of opportunity for us to rethink and reimagine tourism for the future which is more sustainable, inclusive and less susceptible to shocks,” she said. 

Despite challenging headwinds to the global economy in 2023 and beyond, experts have great expectations for the tourism sector, predicting continued pent-up demand alongside new growth opportunities and emerging niche markets arising from the pandemic. For instance, as tourism recovery gets underway, the boundaries between work, home, leisure and travel become increasingly blurred, requiring greater cross-collaboration between tourism and transport, health, security, cities and urban systems towards greater liveability and quality of life for both visitors and residents alike. 

“These are just some of the exciting new prospects that will be explored during the 2-day conference. Therefore, I hope the chosen theme of “Tourism Futures Reimagined” will inspire deep insights on the challenges, opportunities, trends and forecasts shaping the future of the industry,” Saraya concluded.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will jointly organise the 6th World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2022 on 28-30 November 2022 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Themed “Tourism Futures Reimagined”, the conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform which champions thought leadership on tourism futures and strategies driving tourism’s recovery and resilience in a post-pandemic world. 

WTC 2022 will feature a line-up of world-renowned speakers in four sessions:

Session 1: Decoding Tourism Futures – Foresight and Scenarios;

Session 2: Discovering Niche Opportunities for Growth;

Session 3: Redefining Tourism Success – Inspiring Stories;

Session 4: Rebuilding Tourism Resilience and Readiness.
