Tourism Malaysia Supports MATTA Connect 2026 Ahead Of Visit Malaysia 2026

PERAK - The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) organised MATTA Connect 2026, a Business-to-Business (B2B) travel marketplace that serves as a platform for tourism stakeholders to strengthen business networks, foster strategic collaborations and explore new business opportunities in support of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

The event brought together 73 sellers from 14 countries, 33 hosted international buyers from Singapore, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Uzbekistan and India, as well as 229 domestic buyers, providing extensive opportunities for business engagement between local and international tourism industry players.

On 29 July 2026, the opening ceremony was officiated by YB Tuan Loh Sze Yee, Perak State Executive Council Member for Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development at Ipoh Convention Centre (ICC) and Grand Ballroom, AC Hotel by Marriott Ipoh, Perak. Also in attendance were Mr. Nigel Wong, President of MATTA, Mr. Chong Yu Ken, Organising Chairman of MATTA Connect 2026 and MATTA Vice President (Outbound), Mr. Muhammad Aminuddin Abdul Majid, Perak State Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and Ms. Wendy Shin, Chairman of the MATTA Perak Chapter.

The programme featured a Business Forum, Product Presentations, B2B Business Matching sessions and networking activities. As part of the Business Forum, Tourism Malaysia delivered a presentation on Malaysia’s tourism performance, the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and Tourism Malaysia’s strategic directions. Tourism Malaysia also participated as one of the Strategic Partners of MATTA Connect 2026, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the growth and development of Malaysia’s tourism industry.

The closing ceremony was officiated by YB Tuan Chiew Choon Man, Deputy Minister of MOTAC on 30 July 2026. Also in attendance were YBrs. Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, Mr. Mohammad Faisal Abu Suaib Khan, Director General of the Islamic Tourism Centre, Mr. Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director General of Tourism Malaysia, and Madam Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi, Senior Director of the International Promotion Division (Asia/Africa), Tourism Malaysia. The event was attended by approximately 600 participants comprising tourism industry stakeholders.

MATTA Connect 2026 successfully provided a valuable platform for strengthening collaboration among tourism stakeholders, facilitating business networking and promoting Malaysia’s tourism offerings in support of the VM2026 campaign. Tourism Malaysia’s participation further reinforced its commitment to fostering strategic partnerships and enhancing the country’s tourism industry.

MATTA Connect gains traction as B2B platform

The recently concluded MATTA Connect in Ipoh strengthened its credentials as a regional B2B travel trade platform after its second edition attracted 300 local and international buyers and 100 sellers, with buyers and exhibitors reporting quality business meetings and new commercial opportunities.

MATTA president Nigel Wong noted that stronger participation, broader international representation and higher-quality business engagements demonstrated that the industry valued a dedicated B2B platform alongside the association’s flagship consumer-focused MATTA Fair.

“The second edition saw stronger participation, broader international representation and more quality business engagements, which reinforces that the industry values such a platform,” he said, adding that the return of previous participants alongside new delegates reflected growing confidence in the event.

Wong stated MATTA Connect had evolved beyond business matching into a platform where industry stakeholders could exchange ideas on market trends, innovation, sustainability and future collaboration. Looking ahead, he added MATTA would continue to strengthen participation from regional and emerging markets while showcasing Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings, particularly second-tier destinations and unique local experiences.

Delegates said that the event had delivered meaningful business opportunities.

Returning for a second time as a buyer, Kedah-based Morahols Travel CEO Eric R Sinnaya shared this year’s edition generated promising leads with inbound and outbound operators from India and Uzbekistan.

“I met many serious buyers and sellers. The relaxed format allows discussions to continue beyond the scheduled business matching sessions, making it easier to build relationships,” he said.

Melody Lee, inbound department manager at Jinghe International Travel Agency, noted that the event attracted high-quality buyers with strong interest in FIT leisure travel and private tours to China.

“I secured bookings for year-end departures and early 2027, while also establishing new business contacts. Face-to-face meetings remain essential for building trust with partners,” she said.

Guohui Shi, inbound travel specialist at China Prime DMC, observed that Malaysian demand for travel to China had grown steadily following the implementation of the Malaysia-China mutual visa exemption arrangement. He attended MATTA Connect to strengthen relationships with Malaysian outbound agents while gaining a better understanding of Malaysian travellers’ preferences to develop products better suited to the market.

Rather than measuring success solely by exhibitor or buyer numbers, Wong emphasised MATTA’s long-term focus was on the quality of business outcomes and partnerships generated through the platform.

“We want to see stronger connections between international buyers and Malaysian tourism players, especially in promoting local destinations, second-tier cities and unique tourism products that can bring greater benefits to communities across the country,” he said.

MATTA Connect returns to Ipoh to support Visit Malaysia goals

Selected international buyers will explore Perak attractions, including Royal Belum Rainforest, pictured, ahead of MATTA Connect 2026

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) will stage the second edition of MATTA Connect from July 29 to 30 at the Ipoh Convention Centre in Perak, following the inaugural event held in Kuala Lumpur in April 2025.

The B2B travel marketplace will bring together buyers, sellers and tourism stakeholders from Malaysia and across South-east Asia for two days of business matching, networking, destination presentations and industry discussions. Malaysia’s minister of tourism, arts and culture, Tiong King Sing, will attend the closing dinner on July 30, where he is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

Nigel Wong, president of MATTA, said: “Following the success of our inaugural edition last year, MATTA Connect has established itself as an important platform for tourism businesses, buyers and destination partners to forge meaningful collaborations and unlock new business opportunities.”

He added that MATTA Connect plays a strategic role in supporting Visit Malaysia 2026, while continuing to drive business matching, knowledge sharing and market expansion into 2027, strengthening the competitiveness of Malaysian travel businesses.

Wong said the minister’s attendance reflects the importance of industry-government collaboration in driving Malaysia’s tourism growth.

“The minister’s presence reflected the importance of strong industry-government collaboration in driving Malaysia’s tourism growth.”

MATTA Connect 2026 will feature structured B2B business matching sessions and a business forum covering tourism trends, digital transformation, innovation and market opportunities. Participants will include international buyers, destination management companies, airlines, hotels, attractions and travel service providers. The ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) will also participate, creating additional opportunities for cross-border collaboration across South-east Asia.

Selected semi-hosted international buyers will take part in a five-day pre-tour from July 24 to 28, visiting Perak’s tourism attractions, including Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, the Lenggong Valley and the Royal Belum State Park.

The programme is designed to provide buyers with first-hand destination experiences before participating in scheduled business meetings, enabling them to better promote Perak and Malaysia in their respective international markets.

“Ipoh was chosen as the host city for MATTA Connect 2026 to showcase Perak’s rich tourism offerings while creating meaningful business opportunities for the industry,” said Ken Chong, organising chairman of MATTA Connect 2026.

He said the event was designed as a long-term platform to strengthen Malaysia’s tourism industry beyond Visit Malaysia 2026, while creating lasting value for MATTA members in 2027 and beyond.

MATTA Connect 2026 is supported by Tourism Perak, alongside destination partners Penang Global Tourism and the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

Sabah promotes Kaamatan Festival to boost tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah is stepping up efforts to position the Kaamatan Festival as a major tourism draw, tapping growing demand for authentic cultural experiences.

The state is using its participation in the Matta Fair at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) to drive visitor interest ahead of the month-long harvest festival in May.

The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is taking part in the fair with 37 Sabah-based travel agents operating more than 100 booths, offering travel packages to boost forward bookings.

Huguan Siou (paramount leader) of the Kadazan Dusun, Murut and Rungus communities, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, said Kaamatan reflects Sabah's rich cultural heritage and unity among its diverse communities.

He said the festival serves as a thanksgiving celebration and a platform to strengthen social bonds through shared traditions and communal activities.

"Sabah is a beautiful place, with many tribes and a rich culture of celebrations. One of the most important is Kaamatan, which is celebrated over a month.

"This is an occasion to give thanks, work together in the spirit of 'mogitatabang', and celebrate as a community. It strengthens friendship and solidarity within society and families," he said after launching the Kaamatan invitation video at the Sabah Pavilion.

Earlier, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin launched the refreshed Explore Sabah destination brand to strengthen the state's tourism positioning.

He said Kaamatan remains one of Sabah's strongest cultural assets and a key reason for visitors to plan trips to the state.

"The presence of the Huguan Siou highlights the cultural significance of this harvest festival for our indigenous communities, while reinforcing its appeal among visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences," he said.

Jafry added that Kaamatan offers travellers an opportunity to engage more deeply with Sabah's people, traditions and way of life.

Celebrated annually across Sabah, Kaamatan features a month-long line-up of cultural performances, traditional rituals, local cuisine and the Unduk Ngadau pageant, with highlights on May 30 and 31.

With strong participation at the three-day Matta Fair, which ends on April 5, Sabah aims to convert interest into confirmed bookings, particularly for the mid-year period anchored by the festival.

Travel packages also highlight Sabah's attractions, including Kundasang for views of Mount Kinabalu, Semporna for island and diving trips, and wildlife experiences.

A teaser for the Visit Sabah 2027 campaign was also unveiled at the Sabah Pavilion, offering a preview of the state's long-term tourism plans.

Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and STB chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Mohd Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal; Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai; and STB chief executive officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit.

Tourism recovery continues as Malaysia gears up for VM2026 campaign

Logo: Tourism Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to record strong momentum in both international and domestic tourism recovery as the country prepares for the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Tiong said global tourism had shown remarkable resilience, with international arrivals in 2024 reaching 99 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, while the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) projected further growth of between three and five per cent in 2025.

"Despite potential risks arising from global economic uncertainties and rising costs, Malaysia too has reaped the benefits of recovery.

"Last year, the country welcomed 38 million international visitors, generating record tourism receipts of RM106.8 billion.

"On the domestic front, Malaysians made 260.1 million trips in 2024, contributing RM107.2 billion in spending, an increase of 26.3 per cent compared to the previous year," he said in his speech at the opening of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair here today.

His speech was delivered by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general S. Surrendren.

Tiong said the growth trajectory continued into 2025, with Malaysia recording 20.6 million international arrivals in the first half of the year, representing a 17.9 per cent increase year-on-year.

"Domestic tourism also flourished with 69.7 million trips in the first quarter, representing an 18.9 per cent growth.

"Clearly, travel has become an integral part of our way of life, whether in revisiting familiar destinations or discovering Malaysia's hidden gems," he said.

He noted that beyond the encouraging numbers, it was vital for tourism to contribute to protecting the environment, empowering local communities and offering authentic experiences in line with the Malaysia Madani vision of sustainability, inclusivity, respect and shared prosperity.

Tiong added that the VM2026 campaign would be anchored on five strategic pillars, namely sustainable tourism, cultural and heritage experiences, adventure and nature-based travel, digital innovation and enhanced global connectivity.

"These priorities reflect the evolving preferences of travellers who increasingly seek meaningful, authentic and environmentally conscious experiences," he said.

Therefore, Tiong commended the MATTA Fair for its important role in strengthening inbound tourism and building momentum for the campaign, noting that the event has long been a premier platform for travel and tourism.

He said the participation of state tourism bodies and industry players in the fair showcased Malaysia's diverse travel offerings while encouraging domestic tourism, which contributes to economic resilience and community development.

SEPANG: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) expects the 57th National MATTA Fair to generate over RM250mil in sales following rising regional travel demand and the government’s push for Visit Malaysia 2026.

MATTA president Nigel Wong said the fair, the country’s largest consumer travel showcase, is now fully subscribed, as it expects to draw up to 150,000 visitors.

“We are more optimistic this year because of the government’s push for Visit Malaysia 2026 and a renewed interest in Asean travel,” he said at a press conference for the travel fair here yesterday, where the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) was named as Official Airline Partner.

“Visitors will also notice many new products and attractions being introduced at this edition,” Wong said of the event that will take place from Sept 5 to 7 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The fair’s 2,040 booths will take up a combined floor area of 3,800sqm, making it one of the largest editions to date.

Following the launch of the MATTA Eco and Sustainable Tourism Initiative (Mesti) in April, the September edition will feature the largest-ever Mesti Pavilion to promote responsible tourism, environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

“Travel is about connecting people and places. With the support of the Malaysia Aviation Group as our premier sponsor, we have a partner that understands the importance of safeguarding these connections for future generations,” said Wong.

MAG chief commercial officer of airlines Dersenish Aresandiran said the partnership will help strengthen the group’s share of both outbound and inbound markets while supporting the country’s broader tourism agenda.

“Outbound travel continues to show strong double-digit growth, and inbound demand is also rising.

“There will be future-forward products and interactive showcases featuring Malaysia Airlines and Firefly’s extensive networks.

“Visitors can also experience a first-of-its-kind AI-powered travel showcase, giving a glimpse into how technology can redefine the way we plan our trips,” he said.

Dersenish added that MAG would continue its tradition of engaging football fans with meet-and-greet sessions featuring Manchester United legends.

“This year’s line-up will include players from their championship-winning era, and fans from abroad have even travelled to Kuala Lumpur just for this experience,” he said.

In addition, Malaysia Airlines will offer up to 30% off fares across its global network for both economy and business class, while Firefly will introduce all-in return fares starting from RM59.

Ancillary products such as extra baggage, seat selection and lounge access will also be discounted by 20%.

Enrich loyalty programme members will enjoy additional privileges, including early access to sales, a further 5% discount and bonus points.

Instant rewards and redemption gifts will also be offered for bookings made during the fair, alongside buyers’ contest prizes such as business and economy class tickets to Paris, Tokyo, Auckland, Perth, London and South Korea.

Dersenish added that MAG’s booths will showcase a futuristic travel concept, reflecting its ambition to be among the world’s top 10 airlines by 2030.

“This fair is about more than discounts. It is about sharing our vision for a digital, AI-powered and sustainable travel experience, while supporting the Visit Malaysia 2026 target,” he said at the event that was also attended by MATTA exco for special functions Datuk Hamzah Rahmat, MATTA vice-president of air transportation Dr Fazil Khan, MAG head of airlines global sales Syazwan Ahmad Sabri and MAG head of airlines global marketing Emily Tan.

To ensure smooth access, MATTA has arranged 24 free shuttle buses running between KL Sentral, Sunway Putra Mall and MITEC at intervals of five to 10 minutes.

Admission to the MATTA Fair is free, with opening hours from 10am to 9pm daily, with more information at mattafair.org.my or on MATTA’s official social media channels.

ASEAN Travel Exchange 2025 to debut in Kota Kinabalu this June

The inaugural ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATEX) 2025 will take place at The Magellan Sutera Resort, Kota Kinabalu, from June 19 to 21, marking a significant milestone in regional tourism collaboration and recovery efforts.

The event is organised by leading South-east Asia’s tourism bodies, including the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), Federation of ASEAN Travel Associations (FATA), and the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA). It is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, Sabah Tourism Board, Sabah Convention Bureau, and strategic partners AirAsia Group and Jetama Water.

ATEX 2025 is expected to attract 354 delegates, comprising 229 semi-hosted buyers and 125 sellers. Buyers will attend from 17 countries, including China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, South Korea, Iran, Myanmar and Vietnam. They primarily represent tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, and tourism product owners.

Sellers represent seven ASEAN member states – Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam – and cover sectors such as accommodation, transport, attractions, and destination management services.

FATA president Tan Kok Liang said: “This is a timely event that not only aligns with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 but also positions Sabah as a central player in ASEAN’s multi-destination travel ecosystem. ATEX supports ASEAN connectivity goals by facilitating increased visitor flows and regional cooperation. It also reinforces Sabah’s growing reputation as a premier business events destination, helping to enhance its international visibility and economic prospects.”

The official opening on June 19 will feature speeches by Sabah’s chief minister, Hajiji Noor, and the state’s minister of tourism, culture and environment, Christina Liew. The programme will include product presentations from Sabah Parks, Sabah Wildlife, Sabah Convention Bureau, Sabah Tourism Board, and AirAsia. The day will conclude with a welcome dinner at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru.

June 20 will be dedicated to B2B speed-dating sessions between buyers and sellers. On June 21, hosted buyers will take part in curated post-show tours designed to showcase Sabah’s cultural, natural, and island attractions.

Tan added: “The post-tours are designed to give buyers immersive experiences and a deeper understanding of Sabah’s tourism offerings. It’s not just about selling a destination, it’s about experiencing it.”

Looking ahead, Tan confirmed that there are plans for ATEX to become a recurring ASEAN tourism trade event, rotating among member countries. The continuation and future host of the event will depend on the outcomes of this first edition, with factors such as stakeholder feedback, participation, and regional interest playing a role in decisions going forward.

“MATTA Fair continues to grow as the Malaysia’s Largest International Travel Fair, providing great opportunities for the industry and our MATTA members. Our efforts are already showing positive results, with Kedah recording a steady increase in tourist arrivals. Langkawi alone welcomed 300,000 visitors in January 2025, compared to 250,000 in the same period last year. Hotel bookings have also improved significantly, with occupancy rates at MAH-registered hotels in Langkawi rising from 58.1% in January 2024 to 68.3% in January this year,” said Dato’ Haji Mohd Salleh Saidin, Chairman of Kedah State Tourism Culture and Entrepreneurship.

Malaysia eyes France, after strong growth in European arrivals

Malaysia’s inbound arrival statistics for 2024 reveal strong double-digit growth from key European source markets, including the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, compared to 2023. Notably, Germany, France, and the Netherlands have surpassed their pre-pandemic numbers, reflecting a full recovery.

Looking ahead, demand from Europe remains promising as Tourism Malaysia intensifies its promotional efforts across key markets. It is ramping up campaigns to boost Malaysia’s visibility, including the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 blitz, which aims to attract 35.6 million international tourists and generate 147.1 billion ringgit (US$33 billion) in tourism receipts.

Air connectivity between Malaysia and Europe is set to improve significantly with Malaysia Airlines resuming flights to Paris after a nine-year hiatus. Starting March 22, the national carrier will operate four weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Paris Charles de Gaulle using Airbus A350-900 aircraft, increasing to daily flights from March 29. This is Malaysia Airlines’ second European destination after London.

Izham Ismail, managing director of Malaysia Aviation Group, highlighted that Paris was selected to complement the London route, offering additional connectivity to Eastern Europe, North Africa, and South America.

Inbound travel agents are optimistic about this development.

Arokia Das, executive director of The Essence of Asia Tours and Travel, intends to seize the moment and promote Malaysia to both the French market as well as French-speaking African nations such as Algeria, Tunisia, and Ivory Coast. “Additionally, we plan to conduct sales calls in Prague and the Netherlands this year to re-educate outbound partners on Malaysia’s latest tourism developments,” said Arokia.

Saini Vermeulen, executive director of Within Earth Holidays (WEH), told TTG Asia that he now intends to appoint a sales representative in France to further attract French travellers to Malaysia and South-east Asia. He added: “We have forecasted a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in inbound business from Europe for 2025. This growth is largely attributed to the hard work of our sales representative based in Frankfurt, covering German-speaking markets and Eastern Europe.”

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) is also deepening engagement with European outbound markets. Nigel Wong, MATTA president, is leading members of the Malaysian travel trade at ITB Berlin 2025 this week.

Following the tradeshow, the group will embark on a sales mission to Prague.

Additionally, MATTA plans to invite key European outbound agents to join fam trips and business-matching sessions in Malaysia.
