Sarawak Delta Geopark officially endorsed as Unesco Global Geopark

KUCHING: The 3,112-sq-km Sarawak Delta Geopark has been officially endorsed as a Unesco Global Geopark.

Forest Department Sarawak, in a statement today, said the recognition marks a significant milestone in the state's efforts to preserve its unique geological, ecological, and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism.

The certificate presentation ceremony was held on April 27 at the Unesco headquarters in Paris.

Sarawak Deputy Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh represented the state and led the delegation to receive the certificate from Unesco Earth Sciences and Geoparks section chief Kristof Vandenberghe.

Unesco Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic approach to protection, education, and sustainable development.

The department said the achievement reflects years of dedicated collaboration among local communities, government agencies, researchers, and conservation partners.

"Their collective efforts have ensured that the Sarawak Delta is not only protected but also sustainably managed for future generations. It reflects the strength and partnerships between communities, scientists, and policymakers in achieving a shared vision," it said.

The recognition places Sarawak on the global map and is expected to foster responsible tourism that supports local economies without compromising environmental integrity.

Selangor and Perak unite to strengthen Malaysia's geopark tourism

Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark aims to achieve Unesco Global Geoparks recognition. — Photos: Tourism Selangor website

In an effort to boost nature tourism in Malaysia, Selangor and Perak are joining hands to further raise the standards of geoparks in both states.

Through Tourism Malaysia, the Selangor government recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Perak’s Lenggong Geopark.

“This collaboration is not just about sharing expertise but it is also about driving sustainable development that benefits the people,” state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said in a press statement.

He added that Selangor has identified 31 geosites, 20 of which hold strong tourism potential. The state also aims to position the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark as a Unesco Global Geoparks by 2028.

Selangor’s Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark, which was officially declared as the state’s first national park in November 2024, is looking to learn from Perak’s Lenggong to obtain the Unesco recognition. The Lenggong geopark is currently in its Aspiring Unesco Global Geopark phase, and is set to be officially recognised as a geopark next year.

As said by Tourism Selangor chief executive officer, Chua Yee Ling, the “partnership will create opportunities in staff exchanges, geo-guide training, academic workshops, seminars, research collaborations and more initiatives”.

This collaboration not only strengthens Malaysia’s presence in global sustainable tourism but also supports the ongoing Visit Selangor Year 2025 (VSY2025) campaign that aims to welcome eight million visitors to the state.

Currently, Malaysia is home to two official Unesco-recognised geoparks: Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark in Sabah, and Langkawi Unesco Global Geopark in Kedah.

Aside from Lenggong, Delta Geopark in Sarawak was also among the nine geoparks from various countries that received Green Card status at the 10th Session of the Unesco Global Geoparks Council, held in Chile early last month.

Once confirmed by the Uneso Executive Board, both the Perak and Sarawak geoparks will be formally announced as part of the Unesco Global Geopark network in 2026.

Langkawi defies decline, tourist arrivals soar

Amid news of declining tourist arrivals in September and October, compared against the same period last year, the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) has come out to say that numbers for 2023 will still exceed last year’s record.

Langkawi, which is loved by local and international tourists for its picturesque islands, welcomed 2.57 million travellers in 2022. Between January and October this year, it had 2.2 million tourists, representing 69.9 per cent of the targetted 3.2 million tourists.

Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari, manager of tourism division at LADA, told TTG Asia that a number of festivities and events in November were instrumental in boosting arrivals. These included the extended weekend of Deepavali last week, which coincided with the Langkawi Geopark International Enduro Mountain Biker challenge on November 12 and the Hari Mahsuri (Mahsuri Day) programme on November 18, which featuring a unique musical theatre and storytelling experience.

Furthermore, Langkawi International Half Marathon 2023 on December 2 is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants from 31 countries.

Azmil emphasised that December is projected to be a super peak season for Langkawi, mirroring trends observed in previous years.

However, he acknowledged the possibility that arrivals this year might slightly miss the targeted 3.2 million target.

He explained: “The arrival target for 2023 was set in late 2022. During that period, we anticipated a significant influx of Chinese outbound tourists, but regrettably, this expectation has not materialised. The presence of outbound travellers from China has been limited, not only in Langkawi but worldwide.

“Additionally, certain international carriers that were operating flights to Langkawi before the Covid-19 pandemic have reported a shortage of planes, preventing them from resuming flights to Langkawi post-lockdown.”

Azmil is confident that 2024 will mark the best post-lockdown year ever for Langkawi. To further enhance air connectivity, LADA has introduced a new incentive for scheduled airlines flying new routes to Langkawi effective January 1, 2024. It will provide a one-off US$10,000 to the airline.

Additionally, Langkawi is set to be the host destination for Routes Asia 2024, taking place from February 27 to 29. This event will serve as a platform for the region’s airlines, airports, tourism authorities, and aviation stakeholders to meet and share best practices.

He believes that hosting Routes Asia 2024 and providing senior-level airline executives with the opportunity to experience the island will lead to an increased number of international airlines initiating direct flights to Langkawi.

Air connectivity will see further improvement when flydubai initiates daily flights to Langkawi next February, and AirAsia commences direct flights from Kualanamu, Medan in Indonesia from March 2, 2024.

Itaka, one of Poland’s biggest tour operators, will also launch charter flights to Langkawi from winter 2024 for three consecutive years, shared Azmil.

Jerai Geopark disasar jadi Global Geopark

Proposed Unesco Kinabalu Geopark expected to benefit socioeconomy

Sabah Parks’ efforts to get recognition for the Kinabalu Park as a Unesco geopark would help it achieve sustainable development. - Photo courtesy of FelixTongkul.

KOTA BELUD: Sabah Parks' efforts to get recognition for the Kinabalu Park as a Unesco geopark would help it achieve sustainable development.

Its director Dr Maklarin Lakim said the target was part of the state government's aim to improve the socioeconomy of stakeholders including the locals.

He added should they acquire the status, the Kinabalu Geopark would create geotourism products to add on value and complement the existing tourism products.

Sabah Parks with the Department of Minerals and Geosciences are currently in the process of obtaining recognition of the Kinabalu Geopark site to be designated and declared as a Unesco Global Geopark Kinabalu Site.

The proposed geopark has an area of 4,750 square kilometres, involving the Kinabalu Park, and areas in Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Ranau.

"The concept of the geopark development is divided into three which are the rehabilitation of geology sources, tourism infrastructure development and socioeconomic activities that are based on geology or local community.

"There are 46 potential areas to be turned into geotourism sites," he said after the Kota Belud District Land Community Empowerment Programme at the Botung Sports Complex Hall here today.

He added that the Kinabalu Park, which is one of the sites within the proposed geopark, was recognised by Unesco as the first heritage site in the country in 2000.

Maklarin said such a recognition for the Kinabalu Park has lifted the site as a world-class destination that contributes to the income of the locals.

Sabah hopeful of making Unesco listing for Kinabalu Geopark in 2021

A dossier submission for Kinabalu Geopark to be listed in the UNESCO. - NSTP/ courtesy of Felix Tongkul

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will submit a dossier on the Kinabalu Geopark in hopes it will make the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah professor Dr Felix Tongkul said that the compilation of documents involving the park had just been completed.

"It will be submitted by the end of this month. If the dossier is accepted, then we will be evaluated by UNESCO sometime in the middle of next year.

"If everything goes well, we should get the title (Unesco Global Geoparks) by the end of next year," the geologist told the New Straits Times.

Felix, who is also a member of the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry's Promotion and Development Committee for the Aspiring Kinabalu Geopark, said that the park covers an approximately 3,500 square kilometre site involving the districts of Ranau, Kota Marudu, and Kota Belud.

An area has to be declared as a national park before it could be proposed as a UNESCO heritage site.

"We received the national geopark status this year, sometime in March. However, this was not officially announced.

"One of the key principles of (the recognition of) a geopark is the involvement of local communities so they can benefit directly from it," he added.

The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark Site would place Sabah on the world map and boost tourism growth, as well as bring about socio-economic benefits to local communities.

Previously, Felix was reported as saying that the geopark would not affect the daily activities of residents staying in the area and surrounding districts.

The residents would be given guidelines on the importance of the park and also ways to generate income via eco-tourism activities.
