‘Give tax incentives to help art industry’

Attention to detail: Ch’ng explaining his art work to Chew at the Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian artists have urged the government to offer tax incentives for the purchase of paintings to help the industry grow.
Penang Art Society president Ch’ng Huck Theng said artists not only required a channel to promote their paintings, but also needed to earn a living by selling their work.
He noted that it was difficult to inspire new blood when existing artists were striving hard to stay.
“I am appealing to the government to give tax incentives to corporate companies as a way to encourage them to buy more paintings,” he said at the opening of the society’s arts exhibition at Wisma MCA here yesterday.
The exhibition is part of a series of programmes for the month-long Blossom Arts Festival, organised by the Malaysian Chinese Culture and Arts Consultative Council to promote arts and culture in Malaysia while providing industry players a platform to showcase their works.
In responding to Ch’ng’s call, event chairman Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said helping those in the arts and culture industry sell their products was indeed one of their goals when setting up the council.
“We have submitted the proposal to the Tourism and Culture Ministry,” she said.
The Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister said paintings could be a good investment because their value could increase in the future.
Being the oldest registered art society in the country, the Penang Art Society held its exhibition here for the first time, showcasing 22 masterpieces and three sculptures from its members.
The opening ceremony was also attended by some 200 artists from Asian countries like Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan.
Admission to the exhibition, which opens from 11am to 8pm on weekdays, and from 10.30am to 8pm on weekends, is free.

1MCAT 2014 Records Sales Of RM21 Million

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism (1MCAT) Festival 2014 has managed to record sales of RM21 million compared to RM11 million recorded during the festival last year.

National Visual Art Development Board chairman Datuk Mahadzir Lokman said the amount was recorded within seven months through the 117 programmes carried out nationwide.

"This year's 1MCAT saw the participation of 876 artists in 117 programmes, including the Niah Painter Camp, International Art Book Fair in Kedah and the Kampung Art Feast in Melaka."

He said this at the closing of the 1MCAT Festival and the Portraits of the World Exhibition at the National Visual Art Gallery here today.

The festival was aimed at showcasing the roles of art as the catalyst for solidarity and harmony among the multi-racial people in the country, while at the same time, luring more foreign investors to invest in Malaysian contemporary art.

Celebrate Art In Penang The George Town Art Trail 2013

GEORGE TOWN, 19 AUGUST 2013 – In conjunction with the three-month 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism festival (1MCAT), the George Town Art Trail 2013 event was launched in Penang on Friday, 16 August at the prestigious Seventh Terraces Boutique Hotel in George Town.

The event, which is organised by Branding at Hekty Sdn. Bhd, will run until 30 September and showcase the works of established and up-and-coming artists such as Peter Liew, Rebecca Ducket-Wilkinson, Kuen Stephanie, and Jonathan Yun. The public will have a chance to view their works at establishments such as Peter Liew Atelier, Galeri Seni Mutiara, Tiger Gallery, and various other exhibitions and galleries throughout George Town.

The event is in line with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s aim of establishing Malaysia as the premier art tourism destination, as well as using Malaysian artworks to attract tourists to Malaysia. As always, the 1MCAT festival runs nationwide from July to September, and is now in its fourth year.

Other activities included in this year’s 1MCAT is the art tourism competition with the theme “The Futurists”, where participants stand to win the first prize of RM5,000 and a certificate by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Highlights of artists who are participating in 1MCAT George Town Art Trail 2013:

1. Mr Peter Liew, an established artist who paints from his heart, loves to paint with capricious musical rhythm. He likens his paintings to a musical score with lively notes that comes to life when an audience interacts with it. He weaves colours into his masterpieces. His current exhibition features historical landmarks, old street scenes, traditional hawkers along the roadside of George Town, Penang.

2. Rebecca Duckett-Wilkinson, a Malaysian artist inspired by nature and in particular the colours and patterns of flora and fauna from a childhood spent on estates and plantations as well as travels in Indonesia, creates inventive and detailed works made up of layers of images that are 'recorded' as visuals in her head. For her George Town series, Rebecca has produced whimsical images or still life of many of her favourite things that are commonplace around the streets and the markets of the heritage city.

3.Street Stories by Kuen Stephanie shown now at Gehrig Art Gallery hopes to recapture the wonderful memories of people, places and their stories. Some of these images show the unique interweaving of our colourful culture and heritage that bind us together. But many of these charming street scenes are fast disappearing due to rapid urbanisation. The artist wants to recall these scenes so that for one moment we can immerse ourselves in another time. George Town is an ideal place in which to showcase this collection because all the nostalgic charming scenes are still alive and thriving, a living heritage that is both tangible and intangible. The UNESCO heritage city has always been a place of inspiration for her work.

4. Jonathan Yun, another of our participating artisan and a local jeweller, specialises in crafting neo-Peranakan jewellery. He has designed a series of lovely bold Keronsang 'thoes' or 'Ibu Keronsang' in his recent collection. These are made from semi-precious stones such as tzardite, emeralds, luscious pearls and diamonds set in antique silver. Feast your eyes on his nouveau and re-interpreted timeless, silhouette of Peranakan brooches and earrings at his studio.

5. A Tale of 3 Cities, an art exhibition now being held at Penang State Museum and Art Gallery, showcases artist, Ng Woon Lam 's abstract interpretation of the coexistence of multi-cultures - Chinese, Malay and Indian, plus the unique Baba Nyonya elements, add colours and flavour to the local lifestyles and art scene. Ng's paintings cover a wide spectrum of subjects common to the three Straits Settlements of Penang, Singapore and Malacca with special depiction on their rich architectural and cultural heritage.

Recent rise in reports of crime cases has not affected tourism, says Yen Yen

GEORGE TOWN: The recent rise in reports of violent crime in the country has not affected the tourism industry, said Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen on Friday.

Although there was concern over the number of shooting cases nationwide, she said her office had not received any information that tourists were not visiting Malaysia due to safety concerns.

“We don’t hear it as an issue when we hold tourism dialogues with authorities in overseas countries,” she said after launching the 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism George Town Art Trail 2013 at Seven Terraces in Stewart Lane here.
However, she added that the police ought to get to the root of the crime cases to prevent the impression that Malaysia was not safe.

ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair 2013

Date: 18 ~ 22 September 2013

Time: 10.30 am ~ 9.00 pm

Venue: Viva Home Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur

In the wide walkways of shopping malls, in hotel receptions, or the interiors of restaurants and cafes; from quiet corners to lobby areas, don't be surprised if you bump into an art exhibition! No longer confined within the walls of art galleries, clearly, art is now everywhere. And at the ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair, art is now for everyone!

Along with Malaysia's nationwide effort to promote our artists and artworks to emerge as an art hub of the region, ArtMalaysia is holding our inaugural Art Tourism Fair as a unique platform and ideal destination for artists and art lovers alike.

Our country's active arts scene is on the rise; Malaysian museums and galleries have been a scene of robust development for art. Ample space has been made available to nurture and display the most impressive artistic renditions and expressions from this region and beyond.

The expansion of art awareness and enjoyment can be attributed to the support of the leadership in this country. Indeed, art has held the attention – and affections – of many, and now, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has launched the 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism Festival (1MCAT) to further that.

In a similar vein, local art galleries will be encouraged to hold more exhibitions. While this is good news for the art fraternity, it also has a downside – artists will have to wait longer for their turns to showcase their pieces, as the waiting list has increased. Still, this amounts to a “good problem” and will certainly foster greater anticipation from everyone… the more the merrier!

Likewise, art auctions are gaining momentum in this country. Small wonder then, as art is seen as a viable investment in the uncertain economic climate. Art auction houses in Kuala Lumpur continue to record healthy, sales-breaking figures. Furthermore, the frequency of art exchange among other countries is on the increase.

Amid this flurry of activities, ArtMalaysia presents the Art Tourism Fair to complement the dynamic art scene by offering contemporary art in a very accessible manner to the ordinary Joe. Hence our theme – Now Art is for Everyone!

Outstanding paintings by Malaysian artists are marketed and sold at very high prices, and rightly so. This however, alienates them from many young art collectors. During the ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair, art galleries are coming to town in support of putting art into every home and office. The beauty is that you don't need to have deep pockets or dent your bank account to own a masterpiece from a renowned artist. With our 'Now Art is for Everyone' campaign, participating art galleries are selling paintings from RM1,000 to RM30,000.

Art collectors, this is your opportunity. Look out for the ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair!

Malaysia, Truly Asia… And Now, Truly Art, Too!

1MCAT Art Trail Shuttle. photo: Boboy

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 July 2013 – The 1MCAT, Malaysia’s premier contemporary art tourism festival, is back with more exciting art to please the senses, ignite conversation and stir thought.

Organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, 1MCAT will run from July to September 2013. The festival aims to introduce foreign visitors to a gripping facet of the country.

“Malaysia’s natural wonders have been its biggest draw for many years. However, we recognised that our contemporary art industry was burgeoning and compelling – an attraction in itself! 1MCAT highlights the best of what the industry has to offer, and the festival is also a way to support our local players by giving them the limelight that they truly deserve,”  explained the Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz.

Initiated in 2010, 1MCAT offers a myriad of activities. Its extensive programme promises something for all, from the general art enthusiast to the budding art collector.

Activities this year will take place in shopping malls around Kuala Lumpur, and there will also be art fairs, auctions and exhibitions during the three-month period. This year’s 1MCAT also introduces a novel new feature, a 1MCAT Art Tour Shuttle, which will ferry visitors from selected hotels to Shopping Complexes in the capital.

“The festival has grown by leaps and bounds and our team has worked tirelessly to make this year even more exciting than before. We are especially excited about our Art Tour Shuttle, and we’ve also got activities lined up in other states, promising a true art journey across Malaysia,” Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri added.

Looking to large international cities where art museums and events are major attractions in their own right, 1MCAT hopes to enrich the Malaysian tourist experience by offering them one more avenue to enjoy the country and to understand Malaysian culture and her people.

To encourage attendance, entrance to almost all the festival events are free, and visitors – both foreign and local – are encouraged to take in as much as they can.

“The well-known catchline ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia’ still rings true, but with 1MCAT on the rise, we may soon be hearing ‘Malaysia, Truly Art’, too,” said Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri.

Expressions of Merdeka through art

In conjunction with the country’s 56th National Day celebrations next month, Federal Hotels International (FHI) and The Federal Kuala Lumpur, together with Switchup.tv, are organising the “Expressions of Malaysia Art” contest.
Open to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, the contest invites participants to create their own interpretation of Merdeka, expressing them through various art forms.
To convey their message, contestants can choose from four categories — Fine Art (oil or watercolour painting), Photography (black-and-white or colour), Digital Art (black-and-white or colour) or Videography (90-second multimedia).
At the launch recently, Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab commended FHI and The Federal Kuala Lumpur on the timeliness of the contest.
“This initiative is very much in line with the ministry’s upcoming Malaysia Contemporary Arts Tourism Festival 2013. We want to encourage budding artists to pursue their passion and, at the same time, promote Malaysia as an art hub,” he said.
The Federal Kuala Lumpur general manager Simon Leong said, “We believe this contest will test the creativity of participants and help discover more local talent in the field of art.
“We are targetting artists/young artists as well as youth and students to further instil the spirit and meaning of Merdeka among the younger generation,” said FHI group marketing, sales & business development and operations director Ooi Lee Ping.
“A panel comprising 12 professionals in related fields and those with an appreciation for art will judge the submissions based on the best expression of the theme, composition and technique, originality and creativity,” Ooi said.
Also present were Tunku Datin Paduka Khadijah, daughter of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, FHI group director Steven L.Y. Chong, The Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur room division manager Nancy Huang, its hotel manager Darren Tey and several judges for the contest.
For entry forms and detailed list of rules and regulations, visit www.fhihotels.com or www.facebook.com/thefederalkl.
Submissions of artworks should reach Federal Hotels Sdn Bhd at No 35, Jalan Bukit Bintang, 55100, Kuala Lumpur by July 16.
