KULAI: Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) has become one of the “must visit” places for both foreign and local tourists since its opening in December 2011.
Genting Group chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said it received over 4.5 million visitors annually, putting Johor on the regional retail tourism map.

“It has transformed the state tourism sector by creating a new market segment as well as contributing to the rapid development in Iskandar Malaysia,’’ he said during the official opening of the JPO’s third phase of development.

“It has become a popular shopping destination with Malaysians from other states and tourists from countries in the region,’’ said Lim.

During the event, there was also a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate Sultan Ibrahim’s birthday tomorrow.

JPO is a 50:50 joint-venture project between Genting Bhd’s subsidiary Genting Plantations Bhd and the US-based Simon Property Group. The outlets, said Lim, had created a multiplier effect in revenue generation and job opportunities, helping Johor to build and preserve human resources, develop talent and enhance its overall human capital value.

He cited JPO as an example of the many ways in which the Genting Group had integrated its various business operations to create value while affirming its commitment to Johor and Malaysia.

Simon Property Group Inc (Development) chief operating officer Mark Silvestri said it would continue to offer the best brand names and amenities to shoppers under one roof.

“It now has 150 designer and brand name outlet stores, offering savings of up to 65% daily,’’ he said.

JPO’s current designer and brand names include Aigner, Armani Outlet, Bally, Bath & Body Works, BlackBarrett, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, CK Calvin Klein, Coach, DKNY, Ermenegildo Zegna Outlet Store and Furla.

Others are Gucci, Hugo Boss, Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade New York, Lacoste Outlet, Lululemon, Michael Kors, Nike Factory Store, Polo Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo Company Store, Swarovski, Swiss Watch Gallery, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Tumi, Versace and Victoria’s Secret. A paradise for bargain hunters

The weakened ringgit, a new outlet mall in Kuala Lumpur’s outskirts and year-round sales are compelling reasons for avid shoppers to visit Malaysia.

To leverage the love for shopping among Asians and Middle Eastern travellers, which made up 91.2 per cent of Malaysia’s tourist arrivals in 2014, the government and private sector have rolled out a slew of initiatives to encourage higher visitor spending.

The chief reasons that make Malaysia a value-for-money shopping destination is the weakened ringgit against major currencies as well as a hassle-free tourist refund scheme implemented at eight international airports since April 1, 2015. There are also duty exemptions on a wide range of merchandise like jewellery, cosmetics, fragrances and computers.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has timed three sales periods to coincide with peak travel periods in Malaysia: the week when the annual Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix is held in April, the Middle East summer holidays around mid-year and the year-end holiday season. These nationwide sales periods are promoted by Tourism Malaysia to overseas markets.

Noraza Yusof, head of tourism, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, said City Hall is also looking at introducing shorter sales periods that coincide with international brands to increase sale impact. This will further cement Kuala Lumpur’s position as a preferred shopping destination with a strong value-for-money proposition, she added.

Travel consultants too are benefiting from the nationwide sales periods.

Adam Kamal, CEO of Rakyat Travel, has created shopping packages that coincide with the 1Malaysia GP Sale, 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (July to August) and 1Malaysia Year-end Sale (mid-November to January).

He said: “Tourists from the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei have been very receptive to these three-day, two-night packages. We offer a range of accommodation in the Bukit Bintang area and airport transfers. Those who buy our packages come here only to shop, as savings can be as much as 70 per cent off normal retail prices.”

Ally Bhoonee, executive director of World Avenues, a major player in the Middle East inbound market, said: “This recognition has helped the tourism industry to promote shopping more aggressively, especially now that the weakened ringgit provides more bargains and reasons for tourists to visit Malaysia. At the same time, it brings in more revenue to the country.”

To make shopping in major areas more conducive for pedestrians, Kuala Lumpur City Hall built covered walkways linking shopping malls in the Bukit Bintang area with its surrounds in late 2014. Shoppers can now walk in comfort through a 4.5km covered elevated pedestrian walkway that links Berjaya Times Square mall to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur through Sungei Wang Plaza mall.

In July, Kuala Lumpur’s first outlet mall, Mitsui Outlet Park Klia Sepang, opened less than a 10-minute drive from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the LCC terminal Klia2. This is the second outlet mall to open in Malaysia, following Johor Premium Outlets which opened in 2011.

Conceived as a last-minute shopping venue, Mitsui Outlet Park Klia Sepang provides a free baggage storage service, where shoppers can leave their luggages while they shop. The outlet also offers a flight check-in centre which allows visitors to obtain their boarding passes, while a flight information display system allows travellers to check flight information without leaving the site.

Welcoming the debut of an outlet mall near the airport, John Chan, business consultant, Kris International Traveltours, said: “We bring tourists here as a last shopping stop prior to their departure. The offerings are a boon to travellers as it offers very good buys. It also allows them to dispose of their excess ringgit prior to departure, and this benefits the local economy.”

Furthermore, overseas visitors will benefit from the Super Pass, a travel guide-cum-discount booklet. It was published in April and acts as a discount voucher book with savings of up to 70 per cent on retail, attractions and F&B.

“(The Super Pass) helps travllers to plan their holiday better before arriving in Malaysia,” said Alex Wong, senior manager - global marketing at Apollo Knight.

Najib Urges Mitsui Outlet Park To Offer 'Unbeatable' Prices

photo: MOTAC facebook
SEPANG, July 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has urged businesses at the Mitsui Outlet Park (MOP) KLIA here, one of the projects identified under the Entry Point Projects (EPP), to offer "unbeatable" prices to lure shoppers.

The Prime Minister said the premium outlet park has the potential of becoming the largest factory outlet mall in Southeast Asia after the completion of its expansion plans in 2021.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said MOP represented Malaysia's ever persevering spirit of growth and innovation.

"Bold development such as these will contribute to Malaysia's global competitiveness and further strengthen Malaysia's standing as one of the region's best shopping destinations," he said when launching the premium outlet park here today.

MOP, which opened its door on May 30, offers discounts of between 30 and 70 per cent throughout the year for off-season products from international and local brands.

Operated by MFMA Development Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Japan's Mitsui Fudosan Co. Ltd and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), MOP is the first Malaysia's full scale outlet mall in the Klang Valley, spanning 24,000 sq metres.

The mall, which has 127 stores, boasts a flight check-in centre that adds a new dynamic to travellers layover experience.

Najib said the outlet park was one of MAHB's key initial projects in its Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aeropolis master plan.

He said the master plan would not only revolutionise the country's aviation by pioneering the development and strategic planning of airport cities, but would also drive more business investments and tourists traffic to Malaysia.

"As a centre for urban growth and development, it will spur an increase in employment opportunities, thus stimulating the local economy.

"This will ultimately put Malaysia on the map as a global business hub for Southeast Asia," he added.

He said the setting up of the outlet park was one of the EPP identified under the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) in Malaysia's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), which was aimed at driving Malaysia towards a high-income nation and enhancing its global competitiveness.

Launched in 2011, he said the EPP under the Tourism NKEA targeted to establish three premium outlets, namely in Iskandar, Sepang and Penang.

They are projected to contribute as much as RM900 million to the country's gross national income and create 1,500 jobs by 2020, he added.

"As the ETP is to be in large part driven by the private sector, Malaysia Airports was one of the identified champions for this EPP," he said.
