Penang gazettes Fort Cornwallis, asam laksa among 50 heritage items

The state government says the long-delayed gazettement exercise under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011 marks a major step in preserving Penang’s multicultural identity and cultural legacy. – AI-generated pic (For illustration purposes)

GEORGE TOWN: Fort Cornwallis, asam laksa and char kway teow are among 50 cultural heritage items recently gazetted in a landmark move to institutionalise the protection of Penang's rich multicultural legacy.

In the latest round of gazettements on May 7, Penang recognised 15 heritage sites, the Nillaikalakki Silambam martial art and 18 heritage food items under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011.

Among the prominent landmarks gazetted were Fort Cornwallis, Penang Free School, the Penang High Court, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Acheen Street Malay Mosque, Khoo Kongsi, the Penang State Museum Board building and St George's Church.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the latest recognitions marked a major milestone in the state's cultural preservation efforts.

"Although the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011 was passed as early as 2011, no official state-level cultural heritage gazettement had been carried out under the enactment over the past 15 years.

"As such, the Penang government took proactive and important steps this year to translate the legal provisions into concrete action," he said today.

The May 2026 gazettement also gave heritage recognition to many of Penang's best-known dishes and street food staples, including asam laksa, char kway teow, cendol, teh tarik, air batu campur, roti canai, putu mayam, muruku, mi goreng mamak, martabak and kari kapitan.

Earlier, on Jan 22, the state gazetted several intangible cultural heritage elements, including nasi kandar culture, kopitiam culture, the Thaipusam and Chingay processions, the St Anne's Feast in Bukit Mertajam and the Penang Tanjong dialect.

Traditional food items such as nasi kandar, pasembor, oh chien, Hokkien mee, mi udang and roti Benggali were also gazetted in January.

Wong said the gazettement exercise went beyond administrative procedure and reflected the state's commitment to preserving Penang's historical memory, cultural diversity, artistic heritage and social identity.

He said the recognition of heritage across various ethnic communities also reflected Penang's long-standing culture of openness and coexistence.

"Heritage is not merely a repository of local memories, but also an important bridge in strengthening national unity.

"When the histories, beliefs, celebrations, languages, food culture and built heritage of various communities are recognised and protected institutionally, society can deepen mutual understanding and strengthen unity through cultural appreciation," he added.

Wong said all heritage items gazetted at the state level could potentially be proposed for recognition under the National Heritage Act 2005 and eventually nominated for UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

He said the initiative would further strengthen Penang's standing as an international cultural heritage tourism destination while supporting growth in tourism, education, research and the creative economy.

Taman Negara Mulu destinasi purba unik, superlatif

Pesanan penulis - wajib bawa pelitup muka.

Kinabalu Park expects more tourists this year

RANAU: The Kinabalu Park here will be expecting more tourists this year, said Sabah Parks board of trustees chairman Datuk Askalani Abdul Rahim.

"Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Kinabalu Park was a popular destination for tourists from within and outside the country.

"I was made to understand a total 614,797 Malaysians and 134,082 foreigners visited the park before the Covid-19 pandemic, which showed an increase as compared to the year before it.

"In fact, tourist arrivals in 2020 were 150,354 and 129,208 in 2021, despite the pandemic," he said during the 58th-year commemoration of the Kinabalu Park gazettement.

His speech was read by the board's deputy chairman Peter Lintar. Present was Sabah Parks director Dr Marklarin Lakim.

Askalani added that Sabah Parks also thanked the state government for the financial support to develop tourism facilities and board members for their commitment in managing the natural resources in the park.

As for the Kinabalu Park achievements, he added that it has become an example of a terrestrial area that is managed and conserved well.

The park contributes about 14 per cent of flora species in Malaysia and 2.5 per cent of flora species in the world.

"(However), there are many issues and challenges that we have to face in managing a park. Among them is to maintain its status recognition as a World Heritage site.

"For 58 years, effective management has been adopted and improved from time to time.

"Apart from nature conservation efforts, the community as a stakeholder is being considered as an important component in park management programmes."

Earlier, Sabah Parks staff and the park stakeholders had taken part in a gotong royong to get rid of invasive plants such as Dandelion, Balsam, Broadleaf Plaintain, Redflower Ragleaf and Milkwort.

Askalani said that such programmes have become a core focus as those species could affect the park's world recognition status.

Sabah Parks also launched a newly built Search and Rescue building at the park which will be used as a main site to coordinate operations related to climbing, enforcement and community activities.

Royal Belum on UNESCO shortlist because of its rich biodiversity

GERIK, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- The Royal Belum State Park is on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage site shortlist because it is a treasure trove of highly valued flora and fauna, as well as tropical rainforest ecology.

Mohamed Shah Redza Hussein, general manager of the Perak State Parks Corporation, said the body was preparing a dossier for the park's UNESCO candidacy, in cooperation with the state government.

In his speech at the Global Tiger Day 2019 celebration in Gerik today, Mohamed Shah Redza said Gerik represents the entry point to natural wonders, particularly the Royal Belum tropical rainforest that is older than the Amazon and Congo rainforests, with Belum also possessing a variety of wildlife particularly the Malayan tiger that is on the verge of extinction.

According to Mohamed Shah Redza, Gerik is a focal point for research and tiger conservation for scientists from all over the world, adding that the much-anticipated UNESCO recognition would improve ecotourism in the area.

There are currently five areas in Malaysia which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and they comprise Lenggong Valley in Perak, Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Kinabalu Park in Sabah, and the respective historical cities of Melaka and George Town.

Hotels told to improve services to attract more tourists

IPOH: Hotels are encouraged to improve their services to bring in more tourists to Malaysia, says Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (pic).

He said regardless of a hotel's ranking, bad service would lead to lower reviews by customers, which would result in fewer guests.

"There are many three- and four-star hotels that receive better reviews than five-star hotels. Hotel staff need to be more friendly and helpful towards guests," he told reporters after attending the Tourism Perak Business Opportunity seminar at Hotel Syeun here Saturday (July 6).

"Hotels must also capitalise on its surroundings and local attractions to attract higher numbers of visitors," he said.

Muhammad Bakthiar also applauded the Perak government's efforts in promoting the state as a domestic and international tourism destination.

"Perak has a lot of potential and could soon be the only state in Malaysia with two Unesco sites.

"For Visit Malaysia Year 2020, we are aiming to welcome at least 30 million tourists and RM100bil in tourist receipts," he said.

"We hope the state government will work hard to promote its quality tourist attractions such as Bukit Bunuh and the Perak Man in Lenggong," he added.

The Lenggong Valley, where the remains of the "Perak Man" was found, is already a Unesco Archaeological Heritage site.

The Royal Belum State Park is on the Unesco World Heritage nominations list.

AirAsia plans to offer more routes via LTAM

MELAKA, July 1 (Bernama) -- Low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) aims to offer more routes from the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) in addition to the direct flight between it and Penang launched today, said chief executive officer Riad Asmat.

He said this long-term goal would, however, hinge on passenger demand for the new routes and the cooperation of various parties, including the Melaka state government, in promoting the routes.

According to him, Melaka is one of the two most popular destinations among foreign passengers flying on the airline other than Penang, as both states share a few similarities in terms of culture and history that are recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) and serve as the main attractions for tourists.

“In terms of new destinations via LTAM, there are many potential locations in the long term but we will do studies before finalising them. This will take three to six months.

“We believe Melaka itself has potential. Ticket sales recorded for the two-way flights between Melaka and Penang launched today were encouraging with more than 90 per cent of seats taken up,” he told reporters after the welcoming ceremony for the inaugural Melaka-Penang-Melaka flight at LTAM today witnessed by Chief Minister Adly Zahari.

The maiden flight, which used an Airbus A320 to ferry 175 passengers, left the Penang International Airport at 1.20 pm and landed at LTAM at 2.25 pm.

Riad said the launch of the route would not only help boost the local tourism industry but also contribute towards the long-term economic growth of the two Unesco World Heritage sites.

“Through the route, the people of Melaka who want to fly to Sabah and Sarawak or other destinations in ASEAN can take the appropriate flights via our hub in Penang. Melaka is AirAsia's sixth domestic destination in AirAsia and this marks the 14th route from our Penang hub," he said.

The daily direct flights, which depart from Penang to Melaka at 1.20 pm and from Melaka to Penang at 2.50 pm priced, are priced at RM79 for one-way travel.

Meanwhile, Adly said the new AirAsia flight at LTAM would help the state government in ensuring the airport function at an optimal level and be of service to the people.

He said it would contribute to the growth in tourists visiting Melaka, help to promote the state as one of Asia's leading destinations and give a boost to Visit Melaka Year 2019.

“In the first quarter of this year, Melaka welcomed 4.79 million tourists, comprising 3.41 million local tourists and 1.38 million foreign tourists. With the latest service offered by AirAsia, we are confident of achieving the target of 20 million tourists visiting Melaka this year,” he said.

KUCHING, May 25 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government will be requesting for several locations in Kuching city to be listed as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) world heritage sites.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government and Kuching North City Hall will identify historical sites in the state capital to be listed as a world heritage site.

“For example, in Penang, they can declare certain streets as world heritage sites because it has met all the requirements of UNESCO,” he added.

Meanwhile, the excitement to celebrate Gawai Dayak and Aidilfitri is gaining its momentum with the launch of the Gawai Raya bazaar, which offers various goods such as clothing, cakes, and decorative items.

RANAU (Bernama): The number of people allowed to climb Mount Kinabalu has been increased to 165 a day with the opening of two new accommodation blocks, named Mokodau and Kinateki, at Panalaban Tuesday (April 2).

The two-block accommodation, called Panabalan Hostel, is run by Sabah Parks (TTS) and has 25 beds each.

The project also involved the construction of an office for the mountain guides and members of the Mountain Search and Rescue Team (Mosar), check point, and an accommodation block for the mountain guides and porters.

He said TTS hoped to increase the number of climbers to 185 a day.

Meanwhile, participants for the Mount Kinabalu climb in conjunction with the opening of Panalaban Hostel were flagged-off by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry permanent secretary William Baya.

Sabah wants Mount Kinabalu and its environs listed as Unesco Global Geopark by 2020

image: sabahtourism.com

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has set its sights on obtaining Unesco Global Geopark status for Mount Kinabalu and its surrounding districts by 2020.

State Deputy Chief Minister Christina Liew said Sabah Parks was working to get the area recognised as a national geopark site as the first step towards being declared a Unesco Global Geopark Site.

Dubbed "Aspiring Kinabalu Geopark," the proposed area covers the entire Kinabalu Park as well as the whole or parts of the Ranau, Kota Belud and Kota Marudu districts.

Kinabalu Park, which is already recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site, covers an area of 75,370ha.

"After all, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is encouraging nations to protect and preserve their cultural and natural heritage which have outstanding universal value of biodiversity," Liew, who is also State Tourism, Culture and Tourism Minister, said after a meeting with Sabah Parks officials, Sabah Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sabah here.

Liew said the proposed Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark was a new tourism concept and her ministry would prepare a cabinet paper for consideration and approval.

She said a Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark Site would put Sabah on the world map and boost tourism growth as well as bring socio-economic benefits to local communities involved in the Kinabalu Geopark Initiative.

"This can be achieved through creating jobs and participating in tourism-related entrepreneurial activities," she said.

Langkawi was the first to be accorded Unesco Global Geopark status in Malaysia in 2007.
