Malaysia & Thailand Deepen Tourism Ties With High-Impact Tourism Sales Misssion Ahead Of VISIT MALAYSIA 2026

BANGKOK, 3 July 2025 – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia has concluded a successful Tourism Sales Mission across Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok which ran from 22 June to 3 July 2025. The mission aimed to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

Led by the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, the mission brought together Malaysian delegation comprising 24 organisations, including travel agencies, product owners, hotels, Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) agents, and the National Association of Private Educational Institutions (NAPEI).

YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing stated, “Thailand and Malaysia are more than neighbours – we are partners in progress. This mission is a call to rise together as collaborators, driving shared prosperity and sustainable tourism growth throughout Southeast Asia.”

Southeast Asia remains a core pillar of Malaysia’s tourism strategy. In 2024, ASEAN countries contributed 28.19 million visitor arrivals, accounting for 74.3% of Malaysia’s international visitors and generating RM54.38 billion in receipts. Thailand alone delivered 2.27 million visitors, and while there was a slight 1.4% dip in arrivals, Thai travellers spent RM3.99 billion, a 23.3% year-on-year increase, indicating a trend toward higher-quality tourism.

The Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, themed “Surreal Experiences,” positions Malaysia as a destination for meaningful, culturally rich, and family-friendly travel. Thailand is viewed as a key market to attract higher-spending and longer-staying travellers due to its convenient transport connectivity and cultural familiarity. In addition, the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme continues to appeal to Thai families and retirees who seek affordable, comfortable long-stay options in Malaysia.

Key emphasis was placed on initiatives to expand air with land connectivity, promote twin-destination packages, support sectors including medical tourism, education mobility and Muslim-friendly travel.

Both countries also expressed a shared commitment to simplifying border procedures, strengthening marketing partnerships, and championing sustainable tourism practices.

From January to April 2025, Malaysia welcomed 13.4 million international visitors, a 21.0% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this total, arrivals from Thailand reached 833,610, reflecting a healthy year-on-year growth of 3.4% and underscoring Thailand’s continued importance as a key source market.

Tourism Malaysia Launches EDU+ Programme To Boost Edutourism And Cultural Exchange

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 October 2024 – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture through its agency Tourism Malaysia proudly announces the launch of the highly anticipated Edu+ programme, an initiative aimed at elevating Malaysia's edutourism sector.

This initiative targets students, especially those under the age of 16, who hold tourist visas to pursue short-term education programmes while vacationing in Malaysia. Developed in collaboration with the National Association of Private Educational Institutions (NAPEI), a well-established organisation with over 36 years of experience, Edu+ reflects the synergy between the tourism and education sectors to create unique learning opportunities.

In its initial phase, the Edu+ programme focuses on the Japanese market, with plans to expand to other high-potential regions such as Korea, China, Russia, and Vietnam. The initiative is designed to promote cultural exchange, educational enrichment, and tourism growth between nations.

Featuring a comprehensive model centred around learning English at educational institutions in Malaysia, the Edu+ programme encompasses various components, including education, cultural and heritage experiences, collaborations with local schools, homestay experiences, sports tourism learning, eco and nature experiences, and Sustainable Development Goals programmes. Presently, 19 private educational institutions and eight (8) travel agencies have committed to developing Edu+ packages under this programme.

YB Deputy Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said: “As a country rich in diversity, history, arts and culture, Malaysia has great potential in this tourism segment where Edu+ is set to have a key role in attracting young tourists to explore the uniqueness of the country. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 students will enrol in this program in 2024, generating RM50 million of income for the country.”

This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s broader tourism goals ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026, a national campaign aimed at drawing in 23.5 million tourists and RM147.1 billion in tourism receipts. Edu+ is poised to enhance the national tourism industry by indirectly driving Malaysia towards a preferred tourist destination in the region.

New York-based travelling school makes Sabah learning destination

KOTA KINABALU: Students of New York-based Think Global School have arrived in Sabah for a two-month educational journey on the state's rich culture and biodiversity.

They comprised 34 international students aged between 15 and 17, from the world's first travelling high school.

The students are here to acquire fresh experiences and even possibly incorporate them into their lives back home.

The school aims to bring students to live and study in a different country every semester, engaging in place-based and project-based learning pertinent to the nations they visit.

The school's principal, Adnan Mackovic, said the goal of their visit was to help the students and teachers better understand Sabahan culture, especially its biodiversity.

"I've personally visited Sabah twice to attend conferences. That's how I became aware of Sabah. We made preparations to travel here with a group of students right before the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

"We wanted our students to experience what we have learned and what we know about the cultural and natural diversity in this state.

"We believe Sabah would be the ideal location for some of them to encounter cultures that are different from their own and to understand how such a diverse culture could co-exist," he said.

The students arrived in the state on July 5, accompanied by 11 Think Global teachers.

The students hail from various locales such as the Middle East, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Northern Europe and Asia.

During their sojourn here, the group have so far visited the Mari-Mari Cultural Village in Inanam for cultural immersion. They also hiked Mount Trus Madi in Tambunan, the second highest mountain in Sabah.

They also participated in activities with local villagers to learn about rice field cultivation.

In addition, they also learned how to cook using traditional bamboo and jungle survival skills such as identifying edible wild plants.

Mackovic said the students would get to visit the forest reserve, wildlife rehabilitation centres, and an opportunity to go diving, among others.

Yesterday, the Sabah Tourism Board hosted a dinner for the Think Global School group. Also present was its chief marketing officer Tay Shu Lan.

Its chief executive officer Noredah Othman, in welcoming the group, encouraged the students to gain as much experience as they could and to share what they had learnt with their families as well as peers once they return home.

"Think Global School's presence in Sabah means a great deal to us since it promotes our state by allowing students to learn about local places, local history, the many ethnic groups and their way of life.

"While we continue to promote Sabah as an eco-tourism hotspot, we also want visitors to see it as a place where they may expand their horizons via education," she said.

Sabah Tourism Board supports activities that teach young travellers useful lessons, she added.

The students' schedules will include a learning session on blog and content writing with the Sabah Tourism Board Communications and Digital Unit.

The purpose of this session is to teach the students how to communicate what they have learnt and how they may contribute to the promotion of Sabah.

On Aug 30, the students will deliver presentations at which they will discuss what they have managed to learn throughout their trip and their individual projects.

The public are welcome to attend the sharing session at the Sabah State Library in Tanjung Aru.

PATA plans free learning festival to connect travel trade players

A four-week virtual festival that promises to unify the travel trade through free learning and networking opportunities will be held by PATA from June 22 to July 17, 2020.

Dream to Travel will not be “just another virtual event”, remarked PATA CEO Mario Hardy.

Besides interaction with experts and peers, the festival will also provide a platform for industry players to introduce and browse regional and global travel products, and network in fun and innovative ways such as virtual hangouts, he elaborated.

PATA envisioned that the festival will spur the “industry to come together and work towards a more responsible and stronger travel and tourism industry”, Hardy said.

Dream to Travel will feature three key elements, the first being the Dream to Travel forums, where speakers from public and private tourism organisations share latest insights on the industry.

Meanwhile, the Digital Showroom and Community Hub element will provide a platform for tourism players worldwide to interact, and exhibit and browse travel products. Festival recordings and links will be made available.

The third element, Live Experiences, Virtual Hangouts and Giveaways, will challenge players to consider how meet-ups and cultural exchanges can be reworked in a time of safe distancing, where technology is more pertinent than ever.

Games and activities will be incorporated into the festival calendar.

PATA has partnered the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Tourism Malaysia, to feature the respective destinations during the festival. Each will be highlighted for a week.

A fourth partner destination will be announced at a later date.

Interested industry players can register for an Attendee Pass with PATA, and download the event app to receive further updates. A free webinar will be conducted on June 9, 15.00 ICT to provide more details on the Dream to Travel festival.

Edu-tourism infrastructure project to raise awareness on elephant conservation

KINABATANGAN, Oct 5 -- Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi has expressed hope for the edu-tourism infrastructure project at the Pygmy Elephant Conservation Centre near here to raise awareness among the people, especially the local community, on the importance of protecting the elephants from extinction.

Disappointed with the recent killing of elephants in Kalabakan, he said the local community should cooperate in the effort to protect the elephants.

“We hope the local community will give their full cooperation to protect the elephants and not to abuse or kill the animal.
