Hello Penang Campaign Strengthens Tourism Promotion Efforts In Penang

GEORGETOWN — Tourism Malaysia continues to strengthen domestic and international tourism promotion efforts through a strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) Penang Chapter and Trip.com by implementing the Hello Penang Campaign.

This tactical promotional campaign focuses on hotel accommodation offerings in Penang through the Trip.com online booking platform, providing visitors with attractive options and offers when planning their visits to the state. The initiative also aims to revitalise local tourism activities, increase hotel occupancy rates, and support the growth of Penang’s tourism economy and hospitality industry.

Under this collaboration, MyBHA Penang Chapter serves as the coordinator for the participation of member hotels in Penang, while Trip.com acts as the official platform by providing marketing and promotional support, as well as online booking facilities.

The Hello Penang Campaign was officially launched by Mr Abdul Hadi Che Man, Director of Tourism Malaysia Northern Region. Also present were Mr Andy Lau Eng Leong, Chairman of MyBHA Penang Chapter; and representatives from Trip.com’s marketing team. The launch ceremony was held at Hotel Malaysia, George Town, one of the campaign’s participating hotels.

Running for three weeks from 7 to 27 October 2026, the campaign offers an RM20 discount per night during the promotional period. Bookings made during the promotional period may be used for stays until 30 April 2027, in addition to cash rebates and other promotional offers provided by Trip.com and participating hotels.

The campaign targets up to 10,000 room bookings through the network of MyBHA Penang Chapter member hotels participating in the campaign on the Trip.com platform. This target is strongly supported by the 28.8 million international visitor arrivals recorded between January and August 2026, an increase of 1.8 per cent against the 28.2 million recorded during the same period in 2025. In addition, the 151.6 million domestic visitor arrivals recorded in the first half of 2026 also supported this momentum. The figure represents a 5.6 per cent increase compared to the 143.5 million recorded in the corresponding period last year.

The strategic collaboration with Trip.com, which has an estimated 6.67 million registered members, also provides a wider opportunity to promote Penang to both domestic and international markets. This partnership is expected to stimulate demand for local accommodation products while generating economic spillover benefits for tourism industry players, related businesses, and local communities.

As one of Malaysia’s key tourism destinations, Penang offers a diverse range of tourism products and experiences, including heritage, gastronomy, arts and culture, nature, and urban attractions. Through continuous promotional efforts and strategic collaboration with industry players, Penang’s appeal as a sustainable and culturally rich destination can be further strengthened.

Tourism Malaysia will continue to strengthen collaboration with industry stakeholders and strategic partners to diversify promotional approaches, expand market reach, and support the national tourism industry’s sustainability and competitive growth.

Members of the public seeking further information on the Hello Penang Campaign and the list of participating hotels may contact MyBHA Penang Chapter at +60 16-526 8133 or visit www.mybha-penang.org.

Malaysia ranked world's 6th-best medical tourism destination, led by Penang

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai described the achievement as a proud moment for both the nation and the state. NSTP / AURIS FAQRURAZZI

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia has been ranked the world's sixth-best medical tourism destination, with Penang continuing to lead the country's healthcare travel sector.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai described the achievement as a proud moment for both the nation and the state.

"Congratulations, Malaysia, and congratulations, Penang!

"The latest ranking of the world's Top 10 Medical Tourism Destinations is a proud achievement that reflects the collective efforts of Malaysia's healthcare system, tourism industry and government agencies over many years.

"Malaysia has emerged as one of Asia's leading medical tourism destinations, supported by internationally accredited hospitals, English-speaking healthcare professionals, modern medical technologies, affordable healthcare services and strong government support," he said in a Facebook post.

According to the 2026 Global Top 10 Medical Tourism Destinations ranking published by Travel And Tour World, Turkey topped the list, followed by Thailand, India, Mexico, South Korea, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Colombia.

The report said Turkey secured first place due to its affordable treatment costs, advanced medical technologies and high-quality healthcare services, while Malaysia's ranking was driven by its internationally accredited hospitals, English-speaking medical workforce and well-developed medical tourism ecosystem.

It also noted that Malaysia is particularly sought after for cardiology, oncology, fertility treatments, orthopaedics, cosmetic and plastic surgery, dental care, ophthalmology, health screening, rehabilitation services and wellness programmes.

According to the latest figures, Malaysia's medical tourism revenue increased 23.2 per cent to RM3.35 billion in 2025 from RM2.72 billion in 2024.

The number of medical tourists also grew 15.6 per cent to 1.85 million in 2025 from 1.6 million a year earlier, reflecting continued international confidence in the country's healthcare services and competitive pricing.

Wong said Penang remained Malaysia's leading medical tourism destination, contributing about 45 per cent of the country's total medical tourism revenue.

Data from the Penang Centre of Medical Tourism (PMED), covering 16 private hospitals in the state, showed Penang received 527,176 foreign patients in 2025, up 25.94 per cent from 418,608 in 2024.

Medical tourism revenue in the state rose 26.6 per cent to RM1.137 billion in 2025 from RM898.07 million the previous year.

"Penang's sustained leadership is driven by several key advantages, particularly its ability to provide exceptional value for money through high-quality healthcare services at competitive prices.

"Compared with Singapore and many Western countries, patients can enjoy substantial cost savings while receiving internationally recognised standards of care.

"We also have a significant multilingual advantage. Penang's population is proficient in Malay, English, Mandarin, Tamil and Chinese dialects including Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka and Cantonese, enabling effective communication with international patients.

"For Indonesian patients, especially those from Medan who commonly speak Hokkien, language barriers are minimal.

This enhances their overall experience and further strengthens Penang's position as the preferred medical tourism destination for Indonesian patients," he added.

Penang crowned top Malaysian island, ranks 5th in Asia-Pacific

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has scored a major tourism victory after being crowned the fifth-best island in the Asia-Pacific region by internationally renowned travel magazine Travel + Leisure.

In the publication's "Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2026, Best Islands" list, the Pearl of the Orient also emerged as the highest-ranked island destination in Malaysia.

Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Executive Councillor Wong Hon Wai said the ranking is highly encouraging news and a profound source of pride for all Penangites.

"Penang's ability to stand out among many world-renowned island destinations in the Asia-Pacific is certainly no coincidence.

"The island is uniquely home to two separate Unesco-recognised attractions: the George Town World Heritage Site and the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve," he posted on Facebook.

He said that Penang is also blessed with world-famous local cuisine, lush landscapes, scenic coastal views, elegant heritage buildings, and vibrant festivals.

He added that Penang's warm, hospitable, inclusive, and diverse urban character has further cemented its regional appeal.

"The state was not the only Malaysian destination to shine on the leaderboard. Langkawi secured the seventh spot, ensuring the country clinched two positions within the region's top ten island destinations," he said.

Wong said that the dual ranking fully reflects the unique appeal and robust potential of Malaysia's island tourism on the regional stage.

"This international recognition is not only a strong affirmation of Penang's tourism appeal, but also a great encouragement to our tourism players, hoteliers, cultural practitioners, food and beverage operators, transport providers, and all tourism frontliners who have worked tirelessly and contributed quietly over the years," he said.

Topping the list for best islands is Koh Samui, Thailand, followed by Vietnam's Phu Quoc in second place and Indonesia's perennially popular Bali in third.

The Philippines makes its first entry with Palawan securing the fourth spot, just ahead of Malaysia's highest-ranked destination, Penang, in fifth.

The bottom half of the top ten are Thailand's Phuket in sixth, Malaysia's Langkawi in seventh, and the Philippines' Boracay in eighth, while Indonesia's Sumba and Thailand's Koh Chang capture the ninth and tenth positions respectively.

Penang hotels near full occupancy as long weekend draws tourist surge

photo: Penang Global Tourism

GEORGE TOWN: Hotel occupancy rates in Penang have reached between 90 and 100 per cent during the extended holiday period, with some establishments fully booked as tourists flock to the state for the long weekend.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh said hotel bookings during the school holidays and Wesak Day celebrations had been particularly encouraging, reflecting Penang's continued appeal as a family holiday destination.

"On average, weekday hotel occupancy in Penang is around 70 per cent, which is still considered good given the increasing number of new hotels in the state.

"However, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha and this weekend, hotel room bookings, especially in the George Town and Batu Ferringhi areas, have increased significantly compared with normal days, with some hotels being fully booked," he said.

He said the majority of visitors were domestic tourists.

The surge in visitor arrivals was evident across Penang's major tourist destinations, including the Unesco World Heritage Site in George Town, Batu Ferringhi and Penang Hill, which were crowded throughout the long weekend.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Penang had been attracting large numbers of visitors since Friday due to the extended holiday period, which began with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration and continues through the weekend.

"Frankly, the state's tourist areas are filled with visitors, and this is very positive for tourism and the state's economy, especially for small businesses," he said.

According to Wong, the number of visitors using the Penang Hill funicular railway increased over three consecutive days, from 7,400 on Thursday to 8,300 on Friday and 8,800 yesterday.

Popular food outlets, nasi kandar restaurants and food courts were also packed with visitors eager to sample local favourites, while many tourists took the opportunity to visit Balik Pulau during the durian season.

The influx of visitors also resulted in traffic congestion along several major routes, particularly those leading to Batu Ferringhi, George Town and Penang Hill.

Goh said several new hotels expected to open this year would further strengthen Penang's hospitality sector and provide visitors with more accommodation choices.

With its blend of cultural heritage, beaches, renowned food and diverse attractions, Penang continues to be among the country's most popular destinations during holiday periods.

Penang gazettes Fort Cornwallis, asam laksa among 50 heritage items

The state government says the long-delayed gazettement exercise under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011 marks a major step in preserving Penang’s multicultural identity and cultural legacy. – AI-generated pic (For illustration purposes)

GEORGE TOWN: Fort Cornwallis, asam laksa and char kway teow are among 50 cultural heritage items recently gazetted in a landmark move to institutionalise the protection of Penang's rich multicultural legacy.

In the latest round of gazettements on May 7, Penang recognised 15 heritage sites, the Nillaikalakki Silambam martial art and 18 heritage food items under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011.

Among the prominent landmarks gazetted were Fort Cornwallis, Penang Free School, the Penang High Court, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Acheen Street Malay Mosque, Khoo Kongsi, the Penang State Museum Board building and St George's Church.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the latest recognitions marked a major milestone in the state's cultural preservation efforts.

"Although the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011 was passed as early as 2011, no official state-level cultural heritage gazettement had been carried out under the enactment over the past 15 years.

"As such, the Penang government took proactive and important steps this year to translate the legal provisions into concrete action," he said today.

The May 2026 gazettement also gave heritage recognition to many of Penang's best-known dishes and street food staples, including asam laksa, char kway teow, cendol, teh tarik, air batu campur, roti canai, putu mayam, muruku, mi goreng mamak, martabak and kari kapitan.

Earlier, on Jan 22, the state gazetted several intangible cultural heritage elements, including nasi kandar culture, kopitiam culture, the Thaipusam and Chingay processions, the St Anne's Feast in Bukit Mertajam and the Penang Tanjong dialect.

Traditional food items such as nasi kandar, pasembor, oh chien, Hokkien mee, mi udang and roti Benggali were also gazetted in January.

Wong said the gazettement exercise went beyond administrative procedure and reflected the state's commitment to preserving Penang's historical memory, cultural diversity, artistic heritage and social identity.

He said the recognition of heritage across various ethnic communities also reflected Penang's long-standing culture of openness and coexistence.

"Heritage is not merely a repository of local memories, but also an important bridge in strengthening national unity.

"When the histories, beliefs, celebrations, languages, food culture and built heritage of various communities are recognised and protected institutionally, society can deepen mutual understanding and strengthen unity through cultural appreciation," he added.

Wong said all heritage items gazetted at the state level could potentially be proposed for recognition under the National Heritage Act 2005 and eventually nominated for UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

He said the initiative would further strengthen Penang's standing as an international cultural heritage tourism destination while supporting growth in tourism, education, research and the creative economy.

Business events deliver RM1.91bil boost to Penang economy in 2025

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's business events sector generated an estimated RM1.91 billion in economic impact in 2025, underscoring its growing role as a key pillar of the state's tourism and services economy amid global uncertainties.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the strong performance reflected the sector's continued expansion, with the state hosting 3,391 business events last year, attracting more than 450,000 delegates and generating over 800,000 hotel room nights.

"Altogether, this brought about RM1.91 billion in economic impact to our state," he said at the launch of the BE (Business Event) Associate programme here today.

Chow said the figures went beyond statistics, translating into tangible benefits for the local economy.

"Behind these numbers are real outcomes — more jobs, more business for local companies and more activity across the whole ecosystem, from hotels to small businesses.

"When business events grow, the economy grows together," he added.

Chow acknowledged that the global tourism sector was facing challenges, with geopolitical tensions making travellers more cautious and leading some to delay trips or opt for closer destinations.

"This is why business events are important. People travel with a clear purpose (either) for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

"Many will stay a bit longer, bring their families, and spend more time here.

"This helps sustain tourism activity during uncertain periods," he added.

Chow also called for stronger momentum towards Visit Malaysia Year 2026, stressing the need for close coordination between federal and state authorities to maximise tourism benefits.

"The state government will continue to do our part to promote Penang. At the same time, strong coordination, consistent promotion and timely support measures will be needed to help cushion the impact of global uncertainties," he said.

Penang's distinctive mix of modern development and Asian heritage, along with its well-established hospitality sector, has made it a popular MICE destination.

Chow said Penang could not afford to be complacent in talent development amid rapidly changing job demands.

"We cannot take our time when it comes to talent development. We need to move faster. Job demands are changing quickly, and our young people must be ready to keep up," he said.

He also encouraged a shift in mindset towards adaptability and multi-skilled learning.

"In the past, people always said it is not good to be a 'jack of all trades'. But today, we need to look at this differently.

"Being able to do many things, to learn new skills and to adapt, this is an advantage," he said.

Chow said the BE Associate programme is the first of its kind in Malaysia and a timely initiative to strengthen youth readiness for industry needs.

Batik Air starts daily Penang–Johor Bahru flights

KUALA LUMPUR: Batik Air has launched a daily direct service between Penang and Johor Bahru effective today, in a bid to strengthen connectivity between the northern and southern regions.

The move follows strong demand during the recent Chinese New Year travel period, when additional flights were temporarily deployed to accommodate a surge in passengers returning home.

The airline said the encouraging response from customers highlighted the growing need for more direct domestic routes that bypass Kuala Lumpur.

Penang International Airport recorded 741,183 passenger movements in January, making it one of Malaysia's busiest aviation hubs after Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Johor's Senai International Airport is also gaining traction as a key gateway to the south.

Batik Air chief executive officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the new service reflects the airline's commitment to strengthening Malaysia's domestic air network in response to evolving travel patterns.

"These two cities play important roles in Malaysia's tourism, trade and business landscape, and this service brings them closer together while making travel more seamless for passengers," he said in a statement.

Looking ahead, the airline said enhancing domestic connectivity remains a key priority in supporting the country's Visit Malaysia 2026-driven tourism ambitions, as well as economic growth.

Chandran said Batik Air will continue exploring opportunities to expand routes that improve accessibility between key regions nationwide, with the Penang-Johor Bahru service marking another step towards a more connected domestic network.

Soori Penang makes TIME's 2026 list of World's Greatest Places

GEORGE TOWN: Soori Penang has been named by TIME, an American news magazine based in New York City, as one of the World's Greatest Places of 2026.

Every year, TIME gathers nominations for places - such as hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums and parks - from its global network of correspondents and contributors, as well as through an application process, focusing on those that offer fresh, exciting and meaningful experiences.

Soori, a 15-suite hotel, draws on its owner, SCDA Architects founding principal Soo K. Chan's early years living in a historic shophouse within the storied Khoo Kongsi compound here, translating those memories for today's travellers.

Unlike many heritage hotels which lean heavily on ornate Peranakan antiques, Soori takes a more thoughtful, contemporary approach.

According to the author, Kathryn Romeyn, from the outside, Soori blends seamlessly with its traditionally styled surroundings.

Inside, however, custom onyx lamps cast a gentle glow through once-shadowy interiors, while restored glazed light wells brighten tranquil water features — an homage to the monsoon rains Chan remembers filling the inner courtyards below.

A restrained palette allows form and texture to take centre stage, accented by subtle nods to Penang's multicultural heritage, such as shishi lion statues and circular stone-look windows inspired by those in the ornate clan house temple.

State Tourism Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, in congratulating Soori, said it was another proud moment for Penang.

"Soori Penang, the newly opened boutique hotel in George Town, has been selected for TIME's 2026 World's Greatest Places, a global list celebrating 100 remarkable destinations shaping the future of travel," he said.

"Having opened its doors in January 2026, the hotel brings together thoughtful design, heritage surroundings and modern hospitality right in the heart of Penang's Unesco World Heritage Site.

"A wonderful milestone that further strengthens Penang's reputation as a world-class destination," he added.

Penang Esplanade seawall wins prestigious Unesco heritage award

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's Esplanade Seawall and Promenade project has gained international acclaim at the 2025 Unesco Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The project received the New Design in Heritage Contexts award, along with Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai shared the announcement via Facebook today, citing the jury's commendation of the project as a national benchmark for conservation and modern design.

The seven-member international jury noted that the reimagining of the historic civic space incorporated an innovative hybrid of traditional and modern engineering to combat coastal degradation.

"The design maintains form and function to enhance community well-being, improve access to the waterfront, and support environmental stewardship in response to climate change", the jury said.

The new seawall features a wide promenade replicating its 19th-century typology, utilising traditional granite construction, a concealed sheet-pile toe, and rock revetment for erosion resistance.

A unique feature is a lower terrace that submerges during spring tides, exposing the original seawall near the Cenotaph War Memorial.

"Under expert guidance, the enhancement of the Esplanade's historicity highlights the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage property Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca. Its dual-structure, local materials, and stakeholder governance are studied as models across Malaysia," the jury added.

New Penang waterfront mall to boost business events and tourism

GEORGE TOWN: The new shopping centre at Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) will complement the area's mixed-use development, supporting business and tourism without creating a retail glut.

IJM Perennial Development director Datuk Tony Ling Thou Lung said the retail component is part of an integrated project including a convention centre, offices and hotels, and is not intended to compete with existing malls.

"This shopping mall is integrated with the convention centre, offices and hotel, and functions as a catalyst by providing amenities to support the overall development and surrounding area," he told reporters after accompanying Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow on a visit to the PWCC.

Ling said concerns over an oversupply of shopping malls often depend on location and planning, but the PWCC development serves a specific complementary role.

"For this development, it will not create an issue of a glut. It has a clear purpose in supporting the mixed-use environment and the activities generated by the convention centre," he added.

The PWCC, which began operations in October last year, is expected to strengthen Penang's position as a leading business and tourism destination in northern Peninsular Malaysia.

The shopping mall, office spaces and hotel are scheduled for completion by mid-year, enhancing the overall functionality and appeal of the waterfront precinct.

Ling declined to reveal the anchor tenant but said the mall would host new brands from Malaysia and overseas, with details to be announced closer to its opening in April.

Meanwhile Chow said that Penang's convention and tourism sector recorded strong growth in recent years, with the estimated economic impact from related activities exceeding RM1 billion last year, benefiting industries such as transportation, retail, hospitality and supply chains.

"With the addition of PWCC, the state expects this economic contribution to rise significantly by 2026," he said.

Chow also said with its blend of modernity and heritage, supported by a robust hospitality industry, Penang has emerged as a highly sought-after destination for business and tourism.
