Genting, Singapore's SUTL to develop Langkawi marina for superyachts

KUALA LUMPUR: Genting Malaysia Bhd and SUTL Enterprise Ltd will jointly develop ONE°15 Marina Langkawi, a new marina at Resorts World Langkawi with more than 90 berths and capacity to accommodate superyachts of up to 140 feet.

The marina is expected to welcome its first yachts in the second half of 2027, according to a joint statement issued by Resorts World Langkawi and SUTL Enterprise last Friday.

The collaboration brings together the companies' complementary expertise to develop the project as a waterfront destination for travellers, yacht owners and the wider yachting community.

The development will expand Langkawi's cruising infrastructure, with facilities for yacht owners and charter operators, as well as access to yacht charters, island-hopping trips and sunset cruises.

Visitors to the marina will also have access to the hospitality, accommodation, dining and entertainment facilities at Resorts World Langkawi.

Situated along the Andaman Sea between Singapore and Phuket, Langkawi is a stopover for yachts travelling along established cruising routes in Southeast Asia.

The island's tourism infrastructure, international connectivity and duty-free status are expected to support further growth in marine tourism.

Genting Malaysia president Lee Thiam Kit said Resorts World Langkawi has always been committed to creating unique experiences that celebrate the beauty and character of the island.

"Through our collaboration with ONE°15 Marina, we look forward to enhancing Langkawi's appeal as a premier island tourism destination, offering visitors new ways to explore the island and its surrounding waters.

"This partnership also supports the Langkawi Development Authority's vision of strengthening Langkawi's position as a world-class tourism destination, by enriching the island's tourism offerings and contributing to the sustainable growth of its maritime and leisure sectors," he added.

SUTL Enterprise executive director and chief executive officer Arthur Tay said the development of ONE°15 Marina Langkawi represents an important milestone in the continued expansion of its marina network and reinforces its commitment to developing waterfront destinations across Asia.

He added that Langkawi's strategic location along the Andaman Sea, between ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore and ONE°15 Marina Panwa Phuket in Thailand, will strengthen the yachting route and enable boaters to enjoy seamless cruising holidays across the three destinations.

"Our regional marina footprint is carefully curated, each defined by a distinct personality and experience, delivering consistently high marina standards, offering members and the wider yachting community a diverse yet cohesive range of exceptional lifestyle-led marina experiences across the region," he said.

Listed on the Singapore Exchange main board, SUTL Enterprise develops and operates marinas, and provides marina consultancy, marina development and yacht chartering services.

It owns the ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore and operates ONE15 Luxury Yachting, which offers yacht chartering services at the club.

Disney Adventure adds special sailings with Langkawi port calls

In keeping with its promise to continually offer new experiences, Disney Cruise Line will add a port call at Langkawi, Malaysia for select Disney Adventure four-day sailings starting December 31, 2026.

Disney Cruise Line believes that the itinerary enhancement will offer guests of the Singapore-homeported Disney Adventure “more choice by combining magical days at sea… with the opportunity to explore another destination in South-east Asia”.

Disney Princesses reign supreme at the Town Square on board the Disney Adventure cruise ship

Sharing initial details of the newly-launched itineraries, a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told TTG Asia that the port call will be made on the third day of the journey, and guests will be able to enjoy nature-based experiences, family-friendly activities, local crafts, and cultural attractions on shore.

These are expected to complement a Disney Adventure cruise vacation.

The spokesperson added that Disney Cruise Line works with independent third-party operators to offer Port Adventures options, which will be priced across a range.

Guests can view the Port Adventures offerings via My Reservations on the Disney Cruise Line website or on the Navigator App. Bookings may be made through these channels or on board the ship at the Port Adventures Counter.

When asked if the new Langkawi port call offering would allow Disney Cruise Line to attract a different segment of guests or offer a strong lure for repeat Disney Adventure fans, the spokesperson said: “Introducing Langkawi gives guests another vacation choice while retaining the four-night format and keeping the Disney Adventure experience at the heart of the vacation.”

She emphasised that the cruise ship remains both the journey and the destination.

“These options provide guests with more reasons to travel and encourage repeat guests to sail again with us on the four-night sailing,” she added.

Besides the new Langkawi port of call, Disney Cruise Line has updated Disney Adventure’s three- and four-night itineraries from September to December 2027.

Cruise ships set to sail thousands of visitors to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to welcome at least 30,000 tourists from cruise ship arrivals this year.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the projection followed confirmation from Suria Capital Holdings Bhd of 25 cruise ship calls scheduled for 2026.

Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), said the state welcomed initiatives that attract visitors and boost tourism-related spending, particularly for local communities and the wider economy.

"Collaboration between the STB and cruise industry players can be further strengthened to better understand how we can jointly promote cruise tourism and Sabah in general, especially for short-stay and day visitors, by leveraging cruise ship arrivals," he said in a statement.

In 2025, Sabah recorded 23 cruise ship calls carrying 24,634 passengers, with 19 ships docking at Kota Kinabalu Port and four at Sandakan Port — nearly double the 14 ships and 16,727 passengers in 2024.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Sabah saw 30 cruise ship calls in 2019, bringing in 36,183 passengers.

This year, Sabah is targeting four million visitors under Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Last year, the state exceeded its target of 3.5 million, recording approximately 3.6 million arrivals.

Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal projects 47pct passenger growth

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's cruise sector is entering a new phase of expansion, with the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) projecting a 47 per cent rise in passenger volume in 2026.

The outlook was announced at the Cruise Tourism Town Hall 2025, where government agencies, industry leaders and community stakeholders outlined a unified plan to position Penang not just as a transit port, but as a future-ready cruise destination.

According to Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman, Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, mega vessels, such as Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas — 364.75 metres long and accommodating up to 7,600 passengers — are redefining capacity standards, while Asia's cruise market continues to expand, driven by new source markets, enhanced itineraries and rising regional travel demand.

"For 2025, SPCT expects 679,809 passengers, supported by a major homeporting boost. Penang's cruise sector is entering a new phase of expansion, with SPCT projecting a 47 per cent rise in passenger volume next year," he said today.

Penang has long been a favourite among visitors for its rich cultural tapestry, blending history, heritage and modern vibrancy.

George Town's Unesco World Heritage status, street art, colonial architecture and diverse culinary scene draw travellers from around the world seeking an authentic and immersive experience.

Its mix of tradition and innovation — from bustling markets to contemporary museums and cafes — makes the island a destination that appeals to a wide range of interests. Cruise passengers, in particular, are drawn to Penang's easy accessibility and compact, walkable cityscape.

SPCT sits just minutes from George Town's historic core, allowing passengers to step directly into a world of heritage streets, temples, clan houses and local eateries.

On July 4, Hwajing Travel & Tours and Astro Ocean Cruise formalised an agreement to homeport the 1,760-passenger Piano Land in Malaysia. Its first departure from Penang is set for Nov 30, operating a three-day round-trip itinerary.

Yeoh said, together with seven scheduled cruise calls at SPCT, this deployment is projected to generate approximately 24,640 passenger visits, each bringing an estimated eight hours of onshore economic activity to local businesses and communities.

To capture this momentum, Yeoh said authorities had outlined several immediate priorities such as enhanced terminal coordination, streamlined Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) procedures for faster turnarounds and the introduction of a Ground Transport Handler System to improve land-side logistics.

"Planning has also commenced for shore power installation, with onshore electrical supply targeted for 2029 to reduce emissions and align with sustainability goals," he added.

Yeoh said, in the medium term, SPCT would undergo upgrades to expand capacity, improve support infrastructure and create dedicated logistics areas. He said surrounding landside zones would be revitalised to bolster last-mile connectivity and unlock new commercial opportunities.

"Penang also aims to strengthen regional route development, linking destinations such as Langkawi, Phuket and Aceh. Long-term, Penang's ambition is to become a sustainable, world-class homeport.

"By deepening regional collaboration and aligning with national efforts ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026, Penang aims to secure a leading position in Southeast Asia's cruise tourism corridor," he said.

Sunway Pier Harbour poised to boost tourism and local economy: MOT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sunway Pier Harbour development project at Port Klang, although not under the supervision of the Transport Ministry (MOT), is recognised by the government for its significant potential to boost both the tourism sector and the local economy.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the private sector is leading the project, which is being developed on the site of the former ferry terminal complex that previously operated services to Sumatra, Indonesia.

"The new development will transform the site into a modern tourism destination, catering to both local residents and international visitors.

"The new Sunway Pier will offer state-of-the-art, user-friendly facilities to enhance the appeal of Port Klang's waterfront, which has yet to experience world-class development," he said in reply to a question from Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar) during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Dr Halimah had asked about the status of planning approvals, the environmental impact assessment, and the project's potential to create employment opportunities.

The project, currently under construction, is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2028.

Loke added that the project would also involve upgrading the Port Klang railway station, ensuring direct connectivity to the new pier. This upgrade aligns with plans to enhance future commuter train services.

In addition, the development will feature not just commercial spaces but also public recreational areas along the waterfront, which is expected to stimulate the local economy by creating job opportunities and business prospects.

"The project is expected to contribute more than RM5 billion to Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the next decade, attract over 30 million tourists, and generate more than 1,000 new jobs," Loke said.

He added that all necessary approvals, including planning permits and building plans, have already been secured from the Klang Municipal Council and various federal agencies, such as the Department of Environment and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

In response to concerns from local residents regarding the project's proximity to existing port operations and the Pulau Ketam jetty, Loke reassured that there would be no disruption to logistics activities, adding that the project involves upgrading existing facilities to establish a main gateway to Pulau Ketam.

Hwajing Travel & Tours has partnered with Astro Ocean Cruise to bring the MV Piano Land to Malaysia. The vessel will make her maiden voyage on November 30, becoming the first Chinese cruise ship to be homeported in Malaysia.

The deployment will run from November 30 to December 16, and marks Hwajing’s second major international cruise collaboration, following the homeporting of an Italian cruise ship last year.

Itineraries will include a three-day, two-night return sailing from Penang to Port Klang, and a four-day, three-night voyage visiting Penang, Langkawi, and Port Klang. Passengers can embark from either Penang or Port Klang, offering more flexibility for Malaysian and regional travellers.

A special six-night New Year Countdown Cruise is also planned, sailing from Port Klang to Singapore, Nha Trang, and Hong Kong. The itinerary will feature a New Year celebration at sea, with passengers viewing fireworks over Hong Kong’s skyline from the ship as she welcomes 2026.

The signing ceremony took place at the Penang Port Commission and was witnessed by Yeoh Soon Hin, chairman of the Penang Port Commission and deputy chairman of Tourism Malaysia. The agreement was signed by Kenny Cheong, managing director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, and Jian-feng Tong, vice president of Astro Ocean Cruise.

Yeoh said in a press release issued by Hwajing Travel: “In line with transport minister, Anthony Loke’s vision to position Malaysia as a premier homeport destination, we are committed to driving the nation’s cruise tourism agenda forward.

“By encouraging travellers to begin and conclude their cruise itineraries in Malaysia, we aim to boost tourist arrivals, create local employment opportunities, and showcase Malaysia’s vibrant culture, heritage, and cuisine on the global stage. With the right strategy, cruise tourism holds tremendous potential to deliver sustained economic benefits and uplift communities across the country.”

Cheong added: “Welcoming MV Piano Land to Malaysia reinforces our commitment in making cruise holidays more accessible and enriching for both Malaysian and South-east Asian travellers. This milestone comes at a special time for us, as Hwajing celebrates its 36th anniversary this year. We look forward to playing a key role in developing Malaysia into a thriving homeport hub for international cruises.”

“The deployment of MV Piano Land is a key milestone in the company’s strategic expansion across Asia. We believe its unique culture and cruise model will effectively stimulate cruise travel demand in Malaysia and surrounding markets,” stated Tong.

StarCruises, Dream Cruises relaunch with maiden voyage of Star Voyager

Star Voyager, the latest ship to homeport in Singapore, embarked on its maiden voyage on March 26, heralding the revival of the StarCruises and Dream Cruises brands, and a new chapter for the former Star Cruises, a brand with over 30 years of history in the region.

The vessel, with a capacity of 1,940 passengers, will offer a new cruising experience tailored for the Asian market, travelling to Malacca and Jakarta before returning to Singapore.

Positioned as an affordable, lifestyle-driven cruise experience, StarCruises will operate mid-sized ships, including the Star Voyager and Star Navigator, catering to travellers seeking comfort, entertainment, and adventure at sea.

Dream Cruises offers a more luxurious experience with exclusive privileges and premium amenities on larger ships, including its flagship, Genting Dream, which accommodates over 3,000 guests.

“By clearly differentiating between StarCruises and Dream Cruises, we are able to cater to distinct segments while reinforcing our leadership in the Asian cruise industry and beyond,” said Michael Goh, president, StarCruises and Dream Cruises. “This is an exciting milestone for StarCruises and we are honoured to play a key role in supporting and contributing towards the growth of Singapore’s inbound and outbound cruise travel.”

The Star Voyager will offer three-, four- and five-night cruises connecting Singapore to dual homeport cities of Jakarta, Malacca, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City – further increasing inbound tourists to these destinations – as well as to other destinations such as Medan, Koh Samui, and Redang island.

A total of US$50 million was invested in refurbishing areas such as the lobby, restaurants, and Palace class suites. The entertainment programme and activities were also carefully planned to cater to multigenerational travellers, including a teens club with activities designed by the ship’s youngest crew to appeal to teenagers.

“We are strong believers in providing good experiences,” said Goh, adding that happy customers make for the strongest ambassadors of the brand.

Colin Kerr, senior vice-president of Cruise Entertainment, echoed this sentiment, noting that some guests are so invested in the product that their feedback has been taken into consideration.

The MICE segment, which contributes to 30 per cent of the business, is also another segment the company plans to continue growing.

StarCruises has plans to offer fly-cruise options to Australia and is exploring the Indian market as well.

Star Voyager will homeport at the Singapore Cruise Centre until July 21.

Langkawi sees surge in visitors with additional ferry trips for Christmas holiday

LANGKAWI: Over 50,000 visitors have arrived in Langkawi via ferry since Dec 20 during the Christmas holiday, which coincides with the school break.

Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd Operations Manager, Lt Commander (Rtd) Norhafiz Abdul Wahid, said passengers accessed the island through the Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis jetty terminals.

"Of the total, 19,215 passengers travelled from the Kuala Kedah jetty terminal to Langkawi, while another 31,300 entered via the Kuala Perlis jetty terminal.

"During this holiday period, additional ferry trips from Kuala Perlis have been arranged to accommodate passengers travelling to and from Langkawi.

"We are providing 19 additional trips from Dec 20 to 29 between Kuala Perlis and Langkawi," he said when contacted today.

State Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin said the rise in visitor arrivals to Langkawi is an encouraging sign for the upcoming Visit Kedah Year 2025 (VKY 2025).

He said feedback from industry players and media reports indicated a significant increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period last year.

"This demonstrates that Langkawi's tourism sector has fully recovered, thanks to the collective efforts of the state and federal governments, agencies, and industry players.

"The consistent promotion of VKY 2025 is yielding positive results, and we are optimistic that next year will see a steady rise in visitor arrivals, not only in Langkawi but also across mainland Kedah.

"We have prepared extensively for VKY 2025 and are just three days away from unveiling what we have to offer for our guests to explore and enjoy," he said.

Meanwhile, Langkawi Paparich Leisure Sdn Bhd, the operator of a luxury cruise, has already received bookings for VKY 2025.

Its executive director Hazani Husin said the company has recently commenced the operation of RM10 million cruise ship capable of accommodating up to 333 passengers, adding a fresh attraction to Langkawi's offerings for VKY 2025.

Malaysia tunes up cruise tourism development efforts

Port Klang Cruise Terminal will be upgraded to accommodate more cruise ships

Cruise tourism development is gaining attention within the Malaysian government, with investments pumped into port infrastructure development to enable the country to attract more cruise ships to homeport and, in turn, lift international tourist arrivals and the local economy.

Transport minister Anthony Loke recently shared at a press conference that improvements included expanding the capacity at Selangor’s Port Klang Cruise Terminal and beautifying the surroundings at Penang’s Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal.

Loke noted that ports in Langkawi, Kuantan, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching could also support cruise ships with upgraded infrastructure.

A technical committee has been formed to spearhead various cruise industry initiatives and attract more cruise operators to homeport in Malaysia. This is led by both the Transport and the Tourism, Arts, and Culture ministries.

Local media The New Straits Times reported that one of the initiatives of the new technical committee would involve the simplification of customs, immigration, and quarantine procedures to ensure smoother passenger movements and cruise ship stopovers.

“The Immigration Department has introduced a QR code system to expedite immigration clearance for cruise passengers. This system will greatly reduce processing times, enhancing the shore excursion experiences for our cruise tourists,” Loke told the media.

In 2023, Malaysia received 1,055 cruise ships which brought 1.5 million tourists to the Malaysian shores. It was an 85 per cent increase in cruise ship arrivals compared with 2019.

Loke said: “Establishing Malaysia as a (cruise) homeport would encourage passengers to enter through Malaysian airports, stay in local hotels before and after their cruise, and spend more within the country.”

Currently, most cruise ships dock in Malaysian ports for a few hours while passengers go on shore excursions. Ships do not take on new passengers.

As a burgeoning tourism hotspot in Southeast Asia, Malaysia currently serves as the homeport for two cruise lines operating from Port Klang in Kuala Lumpur, with plans for further expansion in the pipeline. The departure of the Costa Serena from Port Klang in January 2024 marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s ambition to become a premier homeporting destination. Costa Serena joins the ranks of cruise partners choosing Kuala Lumpur as their homeport. Costa Serena anchors in Malaysia: Port Klang's new status as cruise homeport

KLANG: Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Port Klang's designation as an international cruise homeport for the Costa Serena cruise ship will boost the country's tourism sector.

He said the collaborative effort between Costa Cruise Lines and Hwajing Travel and Tours could bring enduring economic benefits and lasting advantages for the country.

"With Port Klang as the new hub, it unlocks more opportunities for tourists to explore Malaysia's diverse culture, unique architecture and delicious cuisines, be it through excursions to the Royal City of Klang, the vibrant temples of Batu Caves or the street food of Kuala Lumpur."

He said Costa Cruise Lines' recognition of Malaysia as a potential market, coupled with Hwajing's expertise as a stalwart in Southeast Asian cruise tourism, underscores the common vision of the collaboration to tap into the country's halal market.

"This is to make it easier for Muslim travellers to dine in on the cruise without any worries as they will have options for halal restaurants.

"Most international cruises do not have halal restaurants, so it is difficult for them," he said.

"As the transport minister, I extend the government's unwavering support for such ventures, which perfectly aligns with our aspiration for the Madani Economy and Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

He added that the establishment of Costa Serena as Malaysia's first international cruise homeport is a game-changer, elevating Malaysia to a premier international cruise destination.

"This positions Malaysia as a regional leader in job creation within the cruise industry and is also a shot in the arm for supporting sectors such as accommodation, dining, transportation, and retail.

"Port Klang's designation as an international cruise homeport opens doors for collaborative ventures with other regional ports, laying the foundation for a network of intersecting cruise itineraries."

As such, Loke added that he will attend the World Cruise Conference in Miami, Florida, this year to attract more cruise ship companies to make Malaysia their homeport.

Loke attended the inauguration of Costa Serena's first international cruise homeport earlier. Costa Serena is a ship from the renowned European cruise brand Costa Cruises.

Also present were Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, Port Klang Authority chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah, Hwajing Travel and Tours managing director Kenny Cheong, Costa Cruises director of Region and Growth Markets Francesco Raffa and the ship's captain, Giambattista Mancini.

Visit Melaka Year 2024: Discounts up to 55pct await tourists

State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Exco, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman (2nd from right), said Package 24 offers discounts of between 10 and 55 percent aimed at targeting 18.7 million visitors to Melaka for this year by offering them more choices.

MELAKA: Tourists heading to Melaka can enjoy numerous special discounts for a variety of tourism products under Package 24 on the 24th of every month throughout the 2024 Visit Melaka Year (TMM 2024).

State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Exco, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, said Package 24 offers discounts of between 10 and 55 percent aimed at targeting 18.7 million visitors to Melaka for this year by offering them more choices.

"Package 24 was started this month engaging Melaka's tourism players such as hotels, tourism services, and product operators. I have been informed that so far we have 20 industry players offering this special package.

"But I believe the number of participants will increase from time to time throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for them to promote their products and services," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the welcome reception for the passengers of the Seabourn Encore cruise liner at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) jetty at the Melaka-Dumai International Ferry Terminal in Kota Laksamana, today.

Seabourn Encore sailed in from Singapore with 526 tourists onboard, mostly from Australia, Germany, and New Zealand, who disembarked in Melaka to take in its famous sights, particularly around Banda Hilir, before sailing on to Port Klang.

Abdul Razak said Melaka is a port-of-call for the cruise line and the state is targeting an estimated 50,000 foreign tourists from the cruises for TMM 2024.

He said so far the state government has collaborated with three luxury cruise line agents based abroad, offering them a variety of attractive tour packages through the Tourism Promotion Division.

"We were successful in attracting cruise ships to dock in Melaka last year, so we are confident of hitting the 50,000 tourist target this year.

"We will continue this promotion to draw more luxury cruise lines to make Melaka their port-of-call and hope to engage more of them from time to time," he said.
