GOASEAN TV to beam spotlight on tourism

ASEAN tourism ministers at their meeting on Monday welcomed Malaysia’s initiative to establish a homegrown English language ASEAN-focused TV travel channel for all member countries to promote the tourism industry collectively.

GOASEAN will be aired 24/7, on four-hour cycles of six loops, showcasing destinations and tourism products in different concepts and formats to suit a variety of interests, from tourism trivia, travel news and documentaries to travel reality shows, as well as incorporating social media.

From June, GOASEAN will first be aired in Malaysia; by 2016, across the ASEAN region; and by 2017, to a global audience.

Ong Hong Peng, Malaysia's head of NTO, said the broadcasts will be available via platforms such as free-to-air, direct-to-home satellite TV service, and pay TV.

During the meeting, the ministers also endorsed Malaysia’s proposal for ASEAN NTOs to work closely with industry players in the region to create more ASEAN tourism packages online for promotion within South-east Asia and globally via the ASEAN tourism website.

Ong said: “Both initiatives are in line with ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan to promote ASEAN as a single tourism destination.”

Taiwan Tourism Delegation Visit Malaysia To Strengthen Tourism Cooperation

PUTRAJAYA, 12 August 2014 – Taiwan’s delegation of 16 members led by the Vice Director of Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Liu Hsien Hui recently paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Tourism Malaysia Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen in Putrajaya to forge closer ties between the two countries and strengthen cooperation on tourism promotion.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng had led a sales mission to Kaohsiung, Taiwan earlier this year and had invited Ms. Liu to visit Malaysia.

During the courtesy visit, Ms Liu and Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng had exchanged promotional experiences and discussed joint promotions that would benefit both countries. Ms. Liu had also expressed the delegation’s interests in promoting other cities in Taiwan such as Kaohsiung, Taichung and Pingtung in Malaysia.

Prior to the visit, the delegation had met with AirAsia to discuss the possibility of developing a direct flight from Kaohsiung to Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng had welcomed the idea as the additional flight service would boost arrivals to both Malaysia and Taiwan further. She urged tourism industry players including airlines and tourism agencies as well as government agencies to work hand-in-hand to create good tourism packages to ensure sufficient supply of tourists in order to sustain the direct flights operations.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng had also encouraged the delegation to tap into halal tourism products in an effort to attract more Muslim tourists from Malaysia to Taiwan. She suggested to the delegation to appoint a Muslim Tourism Ambassador to promote halal tourism products in Taiwan. The delegation also met with Bumiputra Travel and Tour Agents Association of Malaysia (Bumitra) to get an in-depth view of the Muslim market.

While in Malaysia, the delegation from Taiwan also had the opportunity to attend the opening of the Malaysia International Travel Mart (MITM) at the Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur.

Besides the Vice Director of Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau, the delegation was also comprised of Vice Director of Pingtung Information & Tourism Department Huang Guo Wei, Senior Officer of Taichung Tourism Bureau Chuang Yu Meng, Chairman of Kaohsiung Tourism Association Hwang Chin Shyang, Director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau Kuala Lumpur Office David Tsao, Chairman of Pingtung County Lodging Association Lin Rong Cin and Managing Director of the Taiwan Hot Spring Tourism Association Wang Su Chia.

Last year, a total of 286,266 Taiwanese tourists visited Malaysia, an increase of 18% compared to 242,519 tourists in 2012.

NTOs told to invest in technology for better tourism

The private sector and NTOs must become better at using technology to connect with tourists, especially if they want a share of surging arrivals from key growth markets such as China.

Antonia Lopez de Avila Munoz, president and CEO of Spain's State Company for Tourism Technology and Innovation Management (SEGITTUR), said digital technology is not only a key mechanism for attracting tourists to a destination; it can also be used to improve a wide range of issues such as mobility, security, healthcare, and energy and resource management.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macau last week, he said technology will become increasingly important as the industry moves towards the World Tourism Council’s forecast of 1.8 billion international arrivals by 2030.

“(Spain is the) first in Europe to (have the most) protected areas and third in the world...even with 60 million tourist arrivals a year. That's partly because we're focusing on using technology to help manage everything from security to water usage.”

Given that four out of five people visiting Spain travel with a connected device, technology and social media can play a major role in providing tourists with a better destination experience.

This includes providing visitors with multilingual guides and up-to-date information on events and weather as well as a platform to share their photos, videos and experiences, he said.

Tourism organisations and relevant authorities can also use the data for a number of purposes from monitoring traffic to promoting niche products. To do this, investment in communications infrastructure, such as installing free Wi-Fi in urban centres, is key.

Mei Zhang, founder of WildChina, said technology will also become more important as tourists become increasingly confident about travelling by themselves. This is especially true for the Chinese market, which is becoming more sophisticated.

"Technology that enables self-guided travel will be the winner," she said.

MATTA builds interest for Muslim tours in Japan

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) will sign a MoU in Yokohama tomorrow to promote cooperation and exchange of tourism ideas between the two countries.

The signing of the MoU is held in conjunction with MATTA’s technical visit to Japan, which is hosted by JNTO from January 29 to February 3. The delegation of 30, including media members, will visit Tokyo, Yokohama and Sendai.

Mohd Khalid Harun, president of MATTA and leader of the Malaysian delegation, will be addressing more than 100 Japanese suppliers on tourism trends in Malaysia and the growing interest of Malaysian travellers to Japan during B2B meetings in Yokohama and Sendai.

“Muslim travel has huge potential, and it is good to know that JNTO is seriously looking into it,” said Khalid, who added that a major focus of the visit is to build up interest on Muslim travel and tours to Japan.

Adachi Motonari, JNTO Singapore executive director, said: “Having this opportunity to collaborate with MATTA through this technical visit to Japan is very timely as 2013 marks the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. With the signing of MoU between JNTO and MATTA, we hope to increase the number of visitors from Malaysia as Japan expects to receive one million tourists from ASEAN countries in 2013.”

Japan has recorded steady growth in Malaysian visitor arrivals, especially with the implementation of the multiple-entry visa for Malaysians in September last year. Visitor arrivals from Malaysia to Japan set a new record high of 130,300 in 2012, a 13.8 per cent jump from 2010 when arrivals totalled 114,519.
