It’s national heritage personified

Renowned Kenyah musician Jau performing his art during practice.

PETALING JAYA: From the majestic Sultan Abdul Samad building to the lush greenery of our national parks, Malaysians know the country is not short of places that display our national heritage.

However, not many are aware national heritage does not only refer to a physical space – it could also be a living, breathing human being.

Under the National Heritage Act 2005, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister can declare a living person a national heritage, or a National Heritage Living Person, or Warisan Kebangsaan Orang Hidup(Wakoh).

Since the initiative started in 2005, the title has only been granted to 27 individuals.

Cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, or popularly known as Lat, is on the list for his humorous and even poignant comics which depict Malaysian life.

The title has also been granted to renowned Kenyah musician Mathew Ngau Jau for his skill in playing lilting melodies on the sape.

Indian classical dancer and choreographer Datuk Ramli Ibrahim and 24 Festive Drums co-founder Tan Chai Puan were also acknowledged as Wakoh.

Eyo Hock Seng, who hails from Pasir Mas, is also recognised for his work as a non-Malay wayang kulitpuppet master and storyteller.

Another living national heritage is Maznah Unyan, from the Mah Meri community, who weaves handicraft items.

Abu Bakar Jaafar is also on the list for his performance of boria, a form of Malay theatre popular in the northern states, especially in Penang.

Others include Mohd Bahroodin Ahmad (boria performer), Tan Hooi Song (Chinese drum musician), Ali Badron Sabor (penglipur lara or storyteller), Losimin Majanil (bobohizanor Kadazandusun shaman), Vatsala G. R. Kurup (Bharathanatyamand Katakali dancer), Tan Sri Ahmad Othman Merican (musician), Mek Jah Deris (mak yong dancer), Jati Ju (pua kumbuor Iban cotton cloth weaver), Intan Sulga Kk Tiring (Bajau Laut traditional dancer), Nyonya Tan Abdullah (Dondang Sayang singer – traditional Malay love ballad), Datuk Mohd Baharim Mohd Sharip (Dondang Sayang singer), Norhaiza Noordin (Malay wood carving), Kumaresan Karthigesu (sitar musician), Siri Neng Buah (various cultural arts), Romli Mahmud (Awang Batil or storyteller), Datuk Aripin Said (national folk song writer), Saad Taib (Mek Mulungor traditional Malay theatre performer), Omar Md Hashim (boria performer), Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Rosli Saludin (teromba storyteller) and Razak Senik (rodator Malay folk dance performer).

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said any figure or “local genius” in the cultural art field can be nominated as Wakoh.

Calling it a “special acknowledgement”, Mohamaddin said the title was to preserve the heritage embodied in the traditional creative arts upheld by these figures.

“The idea to give recognition to these figures sparked from the realisation that there are now fewer and fewer of these cultural art practitioners.

“It would be such a loss if these figures, who possess such a high level of creative genius, who are knowledgeable and skilled in the culture and traditions of society, are not appreciated or given their due place,” he said in a statement.

The Wakoh, he added, will also become the point of reference in their respective fields and would receive financial assistance to enable them to pass down their knowledge.

The rewards given to the Wakoh for the years of hard work and effort poured into developing their art are also substantial.

Besides other gifts, each Wakoh is given RM20,000 and can also enjoy first class medical facilities at government hospitals.

To nominate someone for the Wakoh title, Mohammadin said any individual, government agency or NGO can submit a person’s name to the National Heritage Department.

Malaysia Will Bring Cultural Wonders To ITB BERLIN 2019 As Official Country Partner

ITB Berlin 2019 - Press Conference on attraction for the general public - Behint the rickshaw: David Ruetz, Head of ITB Berlin; Bernd Neff, Co-Founder, Berlin Travel Festival (r.); Sitting in the rickshaw: Dr. Martin Buck, Senior Vice President Travel & Logistics, Messe Berlin and H.E. Datin Sarah Albakri Devadason, Ambassador, Malaysia (r.)

FRANKFURT, GERMANY, 20 Feb 2019: As the official Partner Country 2019 at ITB Berlin this year, Malaysia is going all out to woo the Europe market with its amazing and colourful heritage and culture.

H.E. Sarah Nava Rani Al Bakri Devadason, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Germany, said, “I believe Malaysia’s cultural uniqueness is a big draw for the Europe market. As you may know, Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures with influences from Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnicities, as well as from Europe, Arab and the Malay Archipelago. This has resulted in a mixed yet harmonious legacy that manifests itself in Malaysia’s architecture, clothing, language, cuisine and other aspects. As such, the highlight of our presence at ITB this year will be the cultural aspects that we bring to the show.”

Visitors to the trade show happening from 6-8 March 2019 would have the opportunity to experience Malaysia’s architecture, local food and cultural performances. H.E. Ambassador Sarah Nava Rani said, “We will be bringing in the national cultural troupe to showcase about an hour-long performance during the Opening Gala that reflects the beauty and diversity of Malaysian culture and heritage.”

She added, “Visitors to the Malaysia Pavilion can also get to know the Ring Ladies of Sarawak, so named because of their beauty ritual of wearing copper coiled rings on the forearms and calves respectively. This symbol of beauty is fast disappearing and ITB visitors will be lucky to catch the last remaining Ring Ladies of Sarawak this year.”

Malaysia will also bring a special exhibition of Sarawak scarves called “keringkam.” These are hand-embroidered scarves made using gold thread and is an important part of Sarawak heirloom legacy. Visitors will get to see these treasured headgear and other ornaments that have rarely been exhibited.

The Malaysia Pavilion at Hall 26A, Stand 117, will also display architectural forms adapted from ancient Malay architecture. Besides being the venue for networking and meetings, it will also hold regular cultural performances throughout the exhibition. Delicious Malaysian cuisine, renowned for its generous use of medicinal spices and herbs, will also be made available for the public to sample.

Malaysia’s presence at ITB this year will see a big delegation comprising of state tourism boards, tour operators, tourism product owners, hoteliers, airlines, tourism service providers and more. At current count, there are a total of 170 participants representing 84 organisations taking part from Malaysia.

The entire delegation will be led by the Hon. Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia, Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi. As well, Datuk Musa Yusof, the Director General of Tourism Malaysia, the agency in charge of tourism promotions, will be there, too.

“We are deeply grateful to accept the Official ITB Partner Country titleship this year as it entails valuable publicity opportunities globally and gives Malaysia the potential to reach out to key decision makers and top industry players in the region,” she added.

Malaysia is stepping up its promotions this year in preparation of Visit Malaysia 2020, during which the target is to welcome 30 million tourist from around the world and RM100 billion tourist receipts.

The German market has demonstrated to be a potentially strong market for Malaysia to pursue. In 2018, Malaysia received a total of 128,644 German tourists, representing a 17.1% growth from 2017. Initiatives such as the Condor Air winter charter flights, TUI’s Fly and Drive packages, partnership with ECTAA, live seminar “Dertouristik Campus 2020,” workshops, familiarization trips and other airline and tour operator collaborations had helped to drive up demand for Malaysia last year.

In 2019, Malaysia targets 147,000 tourists from Germany to revive Malaysia’s position as a choice holiday destination particularly from this market.

Dr Mahathir, Siti Hasmah join national CNY celebration in Seremban

SEREMBAN:Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali joined several thousand Malaysians at the national level Chinese New Year open house here on Sunday (Feb 17) night.

A fireworks show and a lion dance performance was held when the Prime Minister arrived at Dataran Centrio in Seremban 2 to join in the celebration just before 9pm.

The event - jointly organised by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and Negri Sembilan government - is the first under the Pakatan Harapan government.

"I am happy that we are able to celebrate such events together despite our differences.

"You do not see such celebrations in other countries," he said in his speech.

Dr Mahathir said being tolerant of one another was a blessing for the nation.

"We Malaysians have benefited immensely by accepting one another.

"Today the whole world acknowledges the fact that Malaysia is truly Asia," he said.

Dr Mahathir also commended the organisers for hosting the event which he described as an extravaganza.

"It is my hope that such events will be held on an even greater scale in future as a testament to how multiracial Malaysians can live together in harmony," he said, adding that he was glad to see a non-Chinese being a member of the lion dance performance.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Among the other Cabinet ministers present were Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P. Waythamoorthy.

Meanwhile, Loke thanked the federal government for picking the state to host the event.

"We in Negri Sembilan are proud to be given the honour to hold this event after Pakatan took over Putrajaya. It is also our hope that such events will help strengthen unity among multi-racial Malaysians," said the Seremban MP.

Several events were held to mark the event such as CNY Idol, a cheongsam show and a line dance competition.

Guests were also treated to traditional Chinese dishes as early as 6pm as well as to lion and dragon dance performances from renowned groups.

Operators of unlicensed hotels, AirBnB told to register or face legal action

PETALING JAYA: Operators of unlicensed hotels and AirBnB have been urged to register immediately with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry or face legal action.

Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said delays in registering would possibly open up operators to stern action from the ministry and local authorities.

“We urge all the operators involved to immediately register with the ministry to avoid legal action taken against them under the Tourism Industry Act 1992.

“The ministry is also actively tracking down operators who are unlicensed and we are advising them to register with us,” said Mohamaddin after meeting the Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA) at his office in Putrajaya on Thursday (Feb 14).

On AirBnB, Mohamaddin said his ministry has held discussions with the Housing and Local Government Ministry on implementing conditions on the business.

AirBnB is an online booking platform that allows people to rent out their properties or spare rooms to guests.

“Just like how hotel operators have to register their business, AirBnB also has to go through the same process, which is to register with the ministry and apply for a business licence from the local authorities.

“For that purpose, the ministry is now in discussions with the Housing and Local Government Ministry to identify a new mechanism for business registration for AirBnB operators nationwide,” he said.

The Star had previously highlighted calls for the authorities to draw up rules for AirBnB to solve the problems plaguing the tourism industry, particularly those faced by licensed hotel operators.

On Tuesday (Feb 12), The Star reader YS Chan, through a letter to the editor, said there was a need to regulate businesses such as AirBnB, and suggested that it hold meetings with the Malaysian Association of Hotels and the MyBHA to whip out a joint agreement on how to regulate room-renting in private dwellings.

Langkawi poised to become cruise destination for Europeans

photo: Tourism Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Langkawi may soon see an influx of European tourists as the paradise island is being positioned to become a cruise destination for the European market.

One of Europe’s oldest tour operator, TUI Group, has opened its first office in South-East Asia here and is working with Tourism Malaysia to promote Langkawi as a cruise hub.

TUI is working on flying in more than 7,000 tourists into Langkawi from London, Birmingham and Manchester for a cruise in Asean waters aboard Marella and Mein Schiff cruise ships.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, in his speech read by Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general of promotions Datuk Seri Abdul Khani Daud at a press conference, said TUI’s clients would be a valuable contribution to the ministry’s objective to achieve 30 million tourists and 100 billion receipts by 2020.

“We want to make sure the island is always at the top of the minds of tourists from all over the world, so sustainability and ecotourism are very important,” he said.

He added that overtourism was worrying as they did not want Langkawi to suffer the same fate as Cebu Island in the Philippines, which was shut down for six months in April due to extensive environmental damage.

An increasing number of popular tourist islands around the world have suffered the same fate as mass tourism burdens the islands with unsustainable development, pollution and environmental destruction.

Thailand’s famous Maya Bay, famously known as The Beach, is the most recent to be closed indefinitely to allow the island to recover from damage caused by millions of tourists.

Last March, the Perak government declared Pulau Sembilan off limits as overcrowding was threatening the conservation of the luminescent blue planktons found on the coastline.

Kota Bharu berpotensi jadi Tapak Warisan Dunia UNESCO

RM10 tourism tax to be maintained

THE flat rate of RM10 per room per night on foreign tourists will be maintained, says Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi.

“Under the new government, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry has reviewed implementation of the tourism tax.

“From the review, the implementation of the tax by countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Singapore and Thailand, proved that the tax has brought positive growth to the tourism sector in the long term,” he said in a written reply to Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah (PH-Port Dickson).

Mohamaddin noted that Japan and Saudi Arabia had recently implemented the tourism tax.

He said the tax is expected to bring positive impact to the tourism industry through the financing of infrastructure, arts and culture. It is only applicable to foreign tourists.

Tourism ministry to toss out much-derided Visit Malaysia logo

The much criticised Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020) logo will soon be replaced, a decision made shortly after a new tourism minister was sworn into prime minister Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is planning a contest to find a replacement logo and “a discussion at the ministerial level will soon be held to decide on the details”, according to a report by The Star, quoting tourism minister Mohamaddin Ketapi.

The existing logo was launched by former tourism and culture minister, Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, at the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Chiang Mai in January.

Inbound operators selling Malaysia do not think a change in logo at this stage will confuse the market.

Raaj Navaratnaa, general manager, New Asia Holiday Tours & Travel, said: “We have not done (such) extensive international marketing (based on) VMY2020 that a change in logo at this stage will have an impact.”

Bobby Eng, general manager, Sunflower Holidays, is in favour of the contest format, as it will help to create buzz around VMY2020, especially if it is open to foreign participation.

Azizi Borhan, managing director, Asutra Convex, opined: “The ministry has to be fast in deciding on a new logo and relaunch it as well as the VMY2020 campaign at major travel shows that will take place from September onwards such as PATA Travel Mart, ITB Asia, IT&CM Asia and WTM.”

Direct flight between China's Guizhou province and KL proposed to boost tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is eyeing a boost in tourist traffic between Malaysia and China, as it plans to talk to airlines on operating a direct flight route between Kuala Lumpur to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province in southern China.

Its Deputy Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said that the Ministry planned to discuss the matter of a direct flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Guiyang with local and international airlines.

"We will talk to airlines such as China Southern Airlines, Air Asia, and Malindo to fly direct. Right now there are no direct flights," Muhammad Bakhtiar told the media after delivering the keynote speech at the A Colourful Guizhou Promotion Conference here at Mandarin Oriental Hotel here on Thursday (July 12).

Guizhou is a mountainous province famous for its minority tribes with amazing costumes with silver jewellery and colourful embroidery.

A direct flight route between the two cities could open up tourism opportunities for both Malaysia and China, said Muhammad Bakhtiar.

"We are getting more tourists from China, so we are looking at the option to have direct flights between Guiyang and Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Muhammad Bakhtiar revealed that there were 1.009 million tourists from China to Malaysia from January to April 2018. This was an increase of 37.2% as compared to the same period in 2017.

He said that the Ministry hoped to tap into the huge population of Guizhou, which stood at 43 million, for potential tourists to Malaysia with direct flights between the two cities.

He said that the Government was also trying to make it more convenient for Chinese tourists to get visas into the country.

CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee director-general (Publicity Department) Mu Dugui said that he hoped that a direct flight route will be opened between the two cities so that tourism activities between China and Malaysia can be increased.

"We have a good transport system which helps connect the province to the outside world.

"And with more air connectivity we can increase our promotion of Guizhou," he said, adding that currently there were direct flights from Guizhou to three other Southeast Asian cities, including Chiang Mai in Thailand.

He said that while Guizhou was a lesser-known destination among Malaysians compared to other Chinese cities, he hoped that more promotion and a direct flight route can increase the province visibility among Malaysian tourists.

The conference was jointly organised by CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee and Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC).

The tourist receipts from January until June this year rose 1.8%, contributing RM31.8bil to the nation’s revenue.
