KLIA & Langkawi International Airport Are World’s No.1 For Q2 2021

SEPANG – KL International Airport (KLIA) and Langkawi International Airport (LGK) are the world’s No.1 airports for Q2 2021 in the latest global Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey by Airports Council International (ACI). Both airports achieved a perfect score of 5.0/5.0 in the industry survey that benchmarks the world’s best airports in terms of facilities and service standards. KLIA was previously in the 9th spot, scoring 4.99/5.0 for Q1 in the over 40 million passengers per annum (mppa) category whereas LGK was in 3rd spot with the score of 4.97/5.00 in the 2-5 mppa category. The global achievement by these two airports is highly significant and marks the organisation’s commitment in ensuring world-class passenger experiences.

According to group chief executive officer (Group CEO) of Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, “At KLIA, these encouraging results are a testament to the company’s efforts in continuously maintaining exceptional services and implementing safety measures while it prepares for travel resumption. Major initiatives contributing to the improved performance include the strict implementation of new travel SOPs that heightened a safe and secure travel experience and the opening of 64 newly refurbished washrooms for the continued comfort of passengers.  As for LGK, the refreshed and improved ambience of the terminal resulting from its successful commercial reset initiative continues to contribute to the overall satisfaction of passengers passing through the terminal.”

The airport operator is seeing a gradual uptrend in passenger numbers by recording a 35% increase from the preceding month for overall traffic growth in July 2021. Last month, the Malaysia Airports group surpassed the 3 million mark at 3.3 million total passenger movements for its network of airports for the first time this year with the majority traffic contributed by its Turkish asset, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISG). With the easing of border restrictions and curfews, ISG saw a 35% increase in its total passenger movements at 3 million when compared to the preceding month, reaching 89% of its pre-COVID performance. In fact, the airport’s July 2021 domestic passenger movement performance at 2 million was extremely encouraging as it exceeded the passenger volume for any month pre-COVID in 2019 with 1.5% growth over July 2019.

On the local front, Malaysia Airports recorded nearly 40% increase in total passenger movements at about 260,000 (International: 72,000; Domestic: 188,000) last month as compared to June 2021 for its network of airports here.

Despite the continued interstate travel ban, border closure, and stricter travel restrictions around the region following new outbreak of cases, the marginal increase is a positive break for Malaysia Airports following the recent Government of Malaysia’s announcement allowing flexibility for those fully vaccinated to travel interstate as well as the reopening of domestic tourism within the same state (for states that have progressed to Phase 2) from 10 August onwards. The airport operator is also looking forward to the pilot project of Langkawi Island emulating the Phuket Sandbox Model by inoculating 80% of the island’s population in a move to open the island to fully vaccinated tourists. Apart from that, there is also the possibility of the resumption of domestic tourism activities across Malaysia in September that will provide the much-needed stimulus to the airports, airline partners and the tourism industry.

Asia emerges as leader in low-cost, longhaul air travel: OAG

Asia is setting new trends in longhaul, low-cost air travel, with China poised to become a key regional player in the near future, according to OAG Aviation Worldwide’s new report, Generation X – Long Haul Low Cost Comes Of Age.

The report observes that although low-cost air travel originated in Europe and North America to connect destinations typically within four hours’ flying time, Asian LCCs are adapting the model for locations up to eight hours apart.

LCCs are now seeking to expand their route networks to better connect the rapidly growing travel markets of South-east Asia, North-east Asia, South Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Although LCC growth has been slow in China, it will be pivotal to the sector’s future development, given that China’s Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) recently abolished the minimum pricing requirement for airlines, and introduced new measures and incentives designed to encourage the development of China-based LCCs.

“Given the potential impact of the recent changes made by CAAC, the opportunities are now available for a major Chinese LCC to emerge or for a major Chinese carrier to make a play for regional markets,” said Mark Clarkson, business development director Asia-Pacific, OAG.

An analysis of the region’s top 20 country pair markets for total seat capacity between June 2010 and June 2014 saw China in eight of the fastest-growing routes. The average annual growth in seat capacity between Australia and China was 11.4 per cent, while 20 per cent was recorded between China and Thailand.

Further room for expansion is evident, with only three routes from China – Shanghai-Singapore (ranked fifth), Bangkok-Shanghai (19th) and Beijing-Singapore (23rd) – listed in the report’s top 25 low-cost, longhaul routes in Asia-Pacific.

The other top routes are Bangkok-Seoul, Perth-Sydney, Singapore-Sydney, Singapore-Taipei, Hong Kong-Tokyo, Seoul-Singapore, Melbourne-Singapore, Bangkok-Tokyo (Narita), Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne, Manila-Tokyo, Perth-Singapore, Brisbane-Perth, Tokyo (Haneda)-Singapore, Jakarta-Hong Kong, Brisbane-Singapore, Tokyo (Narita)-Singapore, Denpasar-Hong Kong, Bangkok-Tokyo (Haneda), Kuala Lumpur-Sydney, Kuala Lumpur-Taipei, Hong Kong-Sydney and Chennai-Singapore.

Soon to join the low-cost, longhaul sector are Indonesia AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia X and NokScoot, while Spring Airlines and Cebu Pacific are expanding their networks for the sector. More airlines seem likely to follow in the coming years.

Meanwhile, new airport infrastructure is being developed to support the expansion of the pan-regional LCC sector, with Kuala Lumpur's recent opening of the world’s largest LCC airport terminal.

The large populations, multiple airports and ongoing air transport liberalisation in India and Indonesia mean these countries are also poised to drive growth in Asia’s longhaul LCC market.

Curtain Comes Down On LCCT As klia2 Takes Over

SEPANG, May 9 (Bernama) -- The curtain came down early Friday on the operations at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) with the departure of the last flight from the facility that has given way to the KL International Airport 2 (klia2) which opened for budget carriers on May 2.

The operations at the LCCT ceased after eight years with the departure of AirAsia X Flight D7 170 to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at 2.35 am. The last AirAsia flight out of the LCCT was at 10.30 pm Thursday. Flight AK63 left for Kolkata, India.

The new terminal klia2 was opened as the LCCT was unable to handle the budget carrier passenger traffic that had reached 22 million people per year, way beyond its 15 million people capacity per annum. AirAsia started operating out of klia2 with its first flight into the new facility arriving from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, at 3.50 pm.

The klia2 terminal, built at a cost of RM4 billion, can handle up to 45 million passengers annually, and AirAsia is expected to contribute about 80 per cent of the traffic. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd had said that the LCCT would be turned into an air cargo terminal.

The LCCT, which was opened by the then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on March 23, 2006, had the capacity initially to handle 10 million passengers annually. The facility was expanded in 2009 to handle 15 million passengers.

Besides airlines of the AirAsia group, including AirAsia, AirAsia X, Indonesia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and AirAsia Zest, three other airlines used the LCCT, namely Tiger Air, Lion Air and Cebu Pacific Air.

AirAsia Bhd CEO Aireen Omar, who spoke to reporters at the LCCT last night, talked of nostalgia. "The last night for us ... is a very sad feeling in the sense that the LCCT had been so kind to us," she said.

Aireen said AirAsia had a lot of wonderful memories at the LCCT. "Many good memories here with a lot of good launches, new routes and a lot of international connectivity created," she said. "We made the LCCT a very well-known low cost carrier airport hub in this region and I think it is very sad feeling for us here tonight."

Asked whether AirAsia planned to hire more employees after the move to klia2 since the new airport is thrice the size of the LCCT in terms of capacity, Aireen said the company would improve its processes without increasing the manpower.

"We want to make sure productivity continues to increase. Therefore, I expect them (the employees) to be multitasking and smarter to maximise their efficiency," she said. She said this was for better investment for the future and for the growth of the business.
