Kinabalu National Geopark declared Unesco Global Geopark

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is now the proud owner of a Unesco Triple Crown site, the third in the world to have such distinction following the declaration of the Kinabalu National Geopark as the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark.

Announcing this on Friday (May 26), Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said Sabah has joined Jeju Island in Korea and Shennongjia in China for the distinction of having three Unesco sites.

The decision was made by Unesco’s executive Board in Paris on May 24.

Kinabalu Park’s two other Unesco “crowns” are the World Heritage Site (declared on Dec 2, 2000) and the Unesco Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve (declared on June 12, 2014).

“This is a great achievement for the state government under its Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya initiatives through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and Sabah Parks.

“The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark covering an area of 4,750 square kilometre, is now officially a Global Geotourism destination adding significant value to Sabah’s existing eco-tourism products.

“The Geopark is home to many endemic plants and animals, including 90 orchid species found only on Mount Kinabalu. This include the crimson-headed partridge bird not found anywhere else on earth which will bring direct and indirect benefits to Sabah’s socioeconomy, particularly to more than 290,000 local communities within the district of Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Ranau,” he said.

With the declaration of Kinabalu National Geopark as a Unesco Global Geopark, there are now 195 geoparks in the world located in 48 countries.

The Unesco Global Geopark label recognises the geological heritage of international significance. Geoparks serve local communities by combining the conservation of their significant geological heritage with public outreach and a sustainable approach to development.

Indonesia strengthens tourism ties with Malaysia and Thailand

Indonesia president Joko Widodo launched the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle during the ASEAN Summit on May 11 (Photo: MoTCE)

Indonesia president Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has launched the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Visit Years 2023-2025 to strengthen tourism cooperation among the three countries.

Witnessed by the dignitaries of the IMT-GT member countries, the launch of the campaign took place during the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara on May 11.

The campaign is expected to increase connectivity and growth in the tourism sector for the three countries.

In his speech, Jokowi shared that the IMT-GT area managed to reach a value of US$618 billion during the global pandemic in 2021. He said: “Going forward, the IMT-GT area must be able to further encourage the acceleration of inclusive and sustainable economic growth to face the various challenges ahead.”

Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia minister of tourism and creative economy, added: “(The campaign) is expected to involve 10 provinces in Sumatra, as well as Southern Thailand and Malaysia. One of the main issues is to downstream the industries, including the tourism industry, as well as strengthening connectivity with a target to increase tourist arrivals.”

The campaign aims to attract 60 million tourists and achieve foreign exchange earnings of US$75 billion within the period, according to Sandiaga.

In Indonesia, the campaign will start with Bangka Belitung and South Sumatra, followed by the rest of the provinces in Sumatra.

Commenting on the campaign, Pauline Suharno, president of the Association of Travel Agents in Indonesia (ASTINDO) told TTG Asia: “For IMT-GT collaboration to work, there should be commitment from each country to actually take part. So, it’s not just a pledge, paperwork or FGD output, but concrete steps (need to be taken) to make it happen.”

As part of the campaign, the minister said the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) would hold a world entrepreneur summit event in Padang, West Sumatra.

In order for the campaign to be a success, Pauline opined that member countries should create a co-brand, as well as set short- and long-term joint promotions and budgets.

Christine Kowandi, tour manager of Horas Tours in Medan stressed that there was a need to intensify promotions by having more sales missions to encourage regional traffic.

Quizzed on the types of products that would be a good fit for the campaign, Pauline, who is also president of the Federation of ASEAN Travel Agents, noted: “Travel companies have collaborated long before these growth triangles were formed.”

She elaborated that agents “are used to selling to the three countries”, which includes travelling from Indonesia and transiting in Singapore, before heading to Malaysia and Thailand.

In addition, there are cruises from Singapore-Port Klang and Penang-Phuket available as well.

Terengganu perkenal segmen arkeo-pelancongan bawah air

AHLI penyelidik melakukan proses ekskavasi kapal karam 'The Bidong Shipwreck' di perairan Pulau Bidong, Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, semalam. - UTUSAN/PUQTRA HAIRRY ROSLI

KOTA KINABALU: Tourism Malaysia Sabah in collaboration with Sabah Tourism Board is embarking on a week-long promotional tour to Peninsular Malaysia to continue the rejuvenation effort of the tourism sector.

Its deputy director Trecey J Tojuka said the 'Bah! Mari Pigi Sabah & Labuan Roadshow 2023'  programme is scheduled to take place from May 22 to 27.

She said the roadshow will cover Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

She said tour operators from Sabah as well as Malaysia Airlines and MASwings, will be offering tour packages to travellers during the roadshow, she said.

The roadshow will be focusing on B2B (business-to-business) and business-to-consumer(B2C) interactions, along with  talks on sustainable tourism and updates on Sabah's wonderful destinations, said Trecey.

Unlike last year's event which emphasised travel trade, B2B and seminar, she added.

In line with the theme 'Sustaining Tourism For Our Future', chief executive officer of Future Forest International Sdn Bhd, Safina Yaakob has been invited to present a talk on the subject.

The Sabah Tourism Board will be highlighting the community-based and rural tourism initiatives carried out in the state, which have now become a leading example in Malaysia, she said.

The roadshow aims to raise awareness about the significance of sustainable practices in preserving and conserving Sabah's tourist destinations for the future generations, she said.

The allure of Sabah and Labuan will be showcased during a 'Get Together Dinner' which is expected to be attended by a representative from the German Embassy in Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia director of Package Development  Shahrin Mokhtar and Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman as well as dignitaries, expats and corporates.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is working with the Sabah Birdwatchers association to identify bird species that require protection, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew.

"We want the association to identify certain species we fear may go extinct and write a report to the minister on the details of the species and what we can do to protect them.

"Our ministry, through the Sabah wildlife department, will submit the report to the government, to pass laws to protect them as protected species just like how we protect other wildlife such as elephants and orang utan.

"For now there are no measures specific to birds, but we have to protect them," Liew said, adding she was informed that there were birds that were being hunted.

She said this at the Asian Bird Fair at the Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens here. Present were Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman, Sabah Birdwatchers Association president Ron Pudin and Asian Bird Fair organising chairman Roger Rajah.

Ron said for the past one year, the Bornean peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron schleiermacheri) had been spotted in Telupid, Sabah.

"Borneon Peacock pheasants used to be found in Balikpapan, Indonesia.

"We thought this bird was extinct in Sabah, but in 2015 and 2016, we have records of the bird from camera traps placed in the heart of our forests by our non-governmental organisations and the Forestry Department.

"Previously, birders went to Balikpapan, but now they have come to Sabah. This is the impact when new or rare birds are sighted," he said.

In Sabah, there are eight species of birds that cannot be found elsewhere in the world.

The species are the friendly bush warbler (Locustella accentor), black-crowned pitta (Erythropitta ussheri), white-fronted falconet (Microhierax latifrons), Sabah Partridge ( Tropicoperdix graydoni); Black-capped Babbler (Pellorneum capistratum morrelli); white-crowned shama (Copsychus stricklandii); Rufous Backed Kingfisher and Grey Hooded Babbler.

The association, which was established last year, is also hoping to offer ornithology courses by local universities for the younger generation to gain better insight into the local bird species.

The Asian Bird Fair, in its 12th edition and touted to be the largest birdwatching fair in Asia, will run from Oct 13 to 17 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here.

Rajah said he hoped the event would serve as a platform to foster knowledge exchange, promote conservation efforts and celebrate the incredible avian diversity that Sabah has to offer.
