Convention bureau establishment will position Sabah as premier business event destination

KOTA KINABALU: The establishment of the convention bureau is a game-changer, said Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew.

She said that the bureau signifies a strategic approach to position Sabah as a premier business events destination in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.

"Business events are more than just dates on a calendar. They are catalysts for socio-economic growth. When we host a conference, we create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and foster knowledge exchange.

"With meticulous planning, innovative ideas, and a commitment to excellence, we can attract conferences, trade shows, and corporate gatherings that will not only boost our economy, but also enrich our cultural fabric.

"Our impact extends beyond tourism, it influences education, technology, and even policymaking. Let us embrace this holistic view and recognise that every delegate who walks through our doors contributes to the larger tapestry of progress," she said during the launching of the two-day Business Events Forum at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here.

Liew's speech was read by her deputy permanent secretary II, Alesia Sion. Also present was SICC chief executive officer, Datuk Rosmawati Lasuki.

Meanwhile, in a separate event at SICC, Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, emphasised the state's commitment to further strengthen its foothold in the vibrant Singaporean tourism market.

"Sabah needs to capitalise on Singapore's status as a crucial aviation hub that caters to many international flights and travellers.

"This convenient and efficient connection has greatly enhanced accessibility, making Sabah more accessible to travelers from Singapore and beyond," he said when addressing Singaporean travel agents during the Meet-The-Experts programme here.

Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism chairman, highlighted Sabah's distinctive offerings and the mutual opportunities for growth and prosperity through collaboration between Singaporean travel agents and Sabah's tourism industry.

Malaysia bags Most Expected MICE Destination for 2020 award from China MICE magazine

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's status as Asia's preferred destination for business events has been recognised at the 13th China meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions tourism segment (MICE) Industry Golden Chair Awards.

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) in a statement said the country was named as the fourth in the category of Most Expected MICE Destination for 2020.

"This award aims to commend teams and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to China's MICE industry and set pioneering examples for the development of the industry there.

"The award received is highly significant in ensuring encouragement and promotion for the common progress and high-quality development of Malaysia's business events industry," it said.

MyCEB chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Khani Daud said this award is a strong testament of MyCEB's strong performance and its branding efforts in promoting Malaysia as a preferred business events destination.

Abdul Khani said successful events of all sizes and scope have seen MyCEB repeatedly recognised for its unparalleled attributes and achievements despite the trials and tribulations 2020 has brought upon the business events industry.

"MyCEB has worked closely with the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) and Business Events Council Malaysia (BECM) to formulate MICE standard operating procedures (SOP) which was endorsed by the Malaysian government.

"To add, MyCEB has also launched the Meet in Malaysia campaign that is still ongoing until the month of December 2021 to further boost the industry and entice more international stakeholders," he said.

The Golden Chair Award was initiated and established in 2007 by the China MICE Magazine, a leading high-end tourism and conference and exhibition publication representing China.

In addition, the PATA Annual Summit 2021 will take place from March 23-26 at the Al Hamra International Exhibition Center in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. The event, hosted by the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, will bring together international thought leaders, industry shapers and senior decision-makers who are professionally engaged with the Asia-Pacific region. The Summit embraces a global forum for enhancing the sustainable growth, value and quality of tourism.

Help turn Johor into MICE hub, industry players urged

http://www.tourism.johor.my/
JOHOR BARU: The Johor tourism and hospitality sector has been urged to make the necessary preparations to support the state’s aim of becoming a MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) hub in the region.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said Johor was aiming at becoming one of the top destinations in the region for business events.
“We are in the final stages of setting up the Johor Convention and Exhibition Bureau, which will oversee the mechanism and work for this purpose,” he said after launching the four-star Amerin Hotel in Taman Perling here yesterday.
The state, said Tee, was now in discussions with the Johor economic planning unit and Iskandar Regional Development Authority to work out a strategic plan on making Johor a MICE hub.
“This will help attract more business tourists, whose spending average is 3.5 times more than leisure tourists,” he said, adding that it is also in line with Johor’s tourism strategic plan to make the state a high-value tourist destination by 2023.

Kuala Lumpur forms tourism bureau and MICE desk

Dataran Merdeka. photo: PelanconganKini

In line with the city's 10-year master plan for more tourists, Kuala Lumpur will upgrade the City Hall tourism unit to a tourism bureau with a dedicated MICE desk component in 2H2015.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s head of tourism, Noraza Yusof, said the bureau and MICE desk will be headed by a COO who will in turn report to Kuala Lumpur mayor, Ahmad Phesal Talib.

The MICE desk’s tasks will include the development of a MICE strategy such as branding and offering subventions, and fostering industry collaboration between associations with members of MACEOS and the travel trade, event planners, transportation and equipment suppliers, venue providers and restaurant operators in Kuala Lumpur.

So as not to overlap with Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), the MICE desk will be limited to providing on-ground support to MyCEB’s bids for business events to Kuala Lumpur.

Noraza elaborated: “The idea is to bring people together three or four times a year to update all parties on what is happening in the city and to build a closer working relationship so everyone knows what’s happening.”

The 10-year Kuala Lumpur Master Plan was launched early this year, a roadmap towards achieving the city’s ambitious targets of nearly doubling tourist arrivals to 16 million between 2015 and 2025. It also aims to increase average length of stay from 3.1 nights to 5.5 nights, and raise average spend per day from RM682 (US$183.90) to RM900.

Johor to establish CVB

Johor is on the hunt for hotel investors, as it prepares to set up a state convention bureau in 2016 to bring more business events to the southern-most state of Peninsular Malaysia.

Backed by the Johor state government, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and Johor Department of Tourism, a working committee was recently formed, comprising members from the private and public sector, to hammer out the details of the new CVB.

Ismail Ibrahim, chief executive, IRDA, said the state is concurrently developing hardware in order to attract more business events. Hotel inventory in Iskandar Malaysia, which is being developed as a metropolis three times the size of Singapore, is expected to increase to 6,600 rooms by end-2015, from around 5,000 rooms now. The state of Johor has about 17,000 rooms.

Ismail added: “Currently, we have a main convention centre known as Persada Johor International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru (capital of Johor) that can accommodate a maximum of 4,000 delegates. We have projected that we will need another three to four convention centres – in Nusajaya, Pasir Gudang and Senai.”

Ismail and his team from IRDA are at PATA Travel Mart to network and attract private investors. Current incentives for the development of three- to five-star hotels are 10-year tax holidays, but additional incentives can be considered on a case-to-case basis.

Ganneesh Ramaa, manager, Luxury Tours Malaysia, said the new set-up would help attract more MICE visitors to the state, which in turn would create business opportunities for suppliers. He added: “To attract more business events, there must also be convention centres that can accommodate group sizes of 5,000 to 6,000 pax and are professionally run.”

Johor will be the third secondary destination in Malaysia to have a CVB, after Sarawak in East Malaysia and Penang in the north, which is in the midst of setting up the Penang International Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PICEB). PICEB is likely to be up and running in early 2015.

Penang engages expert consultant for CVB set-up

The Penang state government has unveiled the appointed of David Hall, senior partner at David Hall & Associates, as a consultant to set up the structure of Penang International Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PICEB).

Announced by Penang state minister for tourism development, Danny Law Heng Kiang, Hall’s new posting also tasks him with recommending a sustainable funding model and potential candidates to fill PICEB’s COO position.

David Hall & Associates is an Adelaide-based specialist in the convention and visitor bureau (CVB) industry, and also consults during the formation of Sarawak Convention Bureau.

PICEB, which will be a division under Penang Global Tourism, will be set up by end of the year but may only begin operations in early 2015.

Ooi Geok Ling, managing director, Penang Global Tourism, said the long delay in the setting up of PICEB was due to a stalemate in deciding on a funding model, which led to Hall’s engagement. Hall will be in Penang later this month to meet with local players in the business events industry.

Zulkefli Sharif, CEO of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau opined that the new CVB would complement the federal bureau’s work. He said: “It makes our work easier because when we secure events for Malaysia and Penang is part of the itinerary, we can arrange visits to Penang and there will be PICEB staff on the ground to take them around.”

Penang convention bureau to get off the ground by end 2014

Penang is likely to set up a state convention bureau by the end of 2014, but this is subject to the hiring of a consultant to start work in August on its structure and funding.

If all goes well, this will be almost two years since the Penang chief minister, Lim Guan Eng, mooted the idea in January 2013. The convention bureau is to be known as Penang International Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PICEB).

Plans now hinge on getting the approval of the chief minister and the board of directors of Penang Global Tourism to hire a consultant who will be tasked with drawing up a structure and a sustainable funding model for the bureau to fund its team as well as marketing and promotions, and to support the travel trade in bidding for business events to Penang.

The state government will not provide financial assistance to the bureau but will support it by other means.

Ooi Geok Ling, managing director of Penang Global Tourism, said the delay in setting up the bureau was because the pro-tem committee, comprising local private players in the MICE industry, and the government could not agree on a sustainable funding model for PICEB.

“The hotel room levy in Penang will be taken under consideration for the funding structure of PICEB,” said Ooi. The state government will be collecting RM2 (US$0.62) levy per room, per night on three star hotels and below, while a RM3 levy is charged on four-and five-star hotels.

Malaysia MICE leaders form business events awards

Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) have created the country's first business events awards to recognise excellence, leadership, professional standards, innovation and best practices within the industry.

Set to take place this September, the RAWR Awards 2013 will also further establish Malaysia as Asia’s premiere business events destination in line with the country’s mission under the Economic Transformation Programme.

Explaining the meaning behind the name of the awards, Jonathan Kan, MACEOS president, said: “RAWR Awards is symbolic for Recognising Award Winning Results within the business events industry. RAWR (which sounds like) ‘roar’ is also associated with the growing voice and recognition of the business events sector…as a key contributor to the Malaysian economy.”

RAWR Awards will have 27 award categories including Best International Conference Award, Best Trade Exhibition, Best Incentive Programme, Best Environmental Initiative Award and Best Event, which altogether covers the four main components of the business events industry - meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.

Speaking at the press conference, Ho Yoke Ping, general manager of sales and marketing, MyCEB, said: “It is our aim to honour the industry’s most groundbreaking work, judged by the industry’s most elite talents from around the region. The idea is to give due recognition of industry professionalism and best business practices.”

The awards are open to business event products and suppliers that are members of either MyCEB and/or MACEOS, as well as event owners such as national associations or corporations that may not be members of either organisations.

Applicants must be Malaysian registered companies operating in the country and apply to events and/or business activities that took place between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012. Submission of nominations are being accepted until July 31 this year.

Kuching outbids Prague for ICCA 2016

Kuching has outbid Prague to host the ICCA Congress in 2016, a win it believes will catapult the secondary Malaysian city onto the global association meetings map.

“Look at what hosting ICCA Congress in 2011 has achieved for Liepzig. Shortly after, Liepzig received four major international congresses. We expect the same kind of impact," said Paul D’Arcy, head of Bid Team Malaysia and CEO of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

As part of the bid, Malaysia Airlines has come onboard to offer discounted airfares, including across its Oneworld alliance partners, while hotels have guaranteed rates for 2016, from US$100. Some 700 to 1,000 pax are expected for the congress.

“The value of the bid really is branding, branding, branding,” said a jubilant Mike Cannon, managing director of Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB). “It is a great opportunity for a second-tier city to put itself within the industry.”

In 2012, SCB won 45 bids comprising 19,688 delegates and contributing close to RM40 million (US$13.3 million) of direct delegate expenditure to Sarawak.

ICCA president, Arnaldo Nardone, said it was a choice between a newly-emerging destination in the fastest-growing region of the world, and a well-established cultural European capital with the potential to help ICCA build a stronger presence in Eastern Europe.

“Both presented tremendous bid documents, both delivered strong presentations, both teams were enthusiastic and committed. Kuching, however, stood out in terms of presenting itself as a role model and inspiration for other second-tier cities, was also a whole country bid involving all our Malaysian members, and clearly presented as part of a sophisticated national development strategy.”

SCB’s Cannon gave an example of how Sarawak was a role model for ICCA. “The team at SCB, of 27 people, are young and they have been using every educational tool ICCA brought, such as how to research for business, how to bid, etc.”

Added D’arcy: “Kuching supports ICCA’s objective of showcasing a city which has risen from obscurity to be the second most successful meetings destination in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur in terms of number of events.”

Eric Tan, general manager of Pullman Kuching, an official hotel for the event, said: "This will definitely benefit the state with the number of international event and conference organisers attending who will be able to see the enormous benefits and attractions we can offer for big events  It showcases how a second-tier destination, by working together as Team Malaysia, is able to impress and attract well-travelled partners to come and experience what we can offer here in Borneo.

“We have three years to prepare for ICCA and will definitely make it a successful event to really put Sarawak and Borneo on the map."

Peter Brokenshire, general manager, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), said: “Kuching has been active in developing business tourism and this win is a feather in its cap, of course the whole of Malaysia was behind it too. “There will be opportunities for KLCC as Kuala Lumpur is the gateway for a lot of the delegates. We'll be offering post or pre-tour programmes.”

Next year’s ICCA congress will be in Shanghai, followed by Antalya, Turkey in 2014 and Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2015.

New Logos For Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB)

Kuala Lumpur, 13 May 2013 – Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) today officially launches the new MyCEB corporate logo. The new logo symbolizes the Organisation’s focus on enabling confidence to be recognised as Asia’s model bureau – the leading edge in terms of success, professionalism, best practices and business impact.

New MyCEB logo:

The new corporate logo brings together the MyCEB name with a simple dot which marks the beginning of all creative acts and ideas. One of the three basic shapes in geometry, the circle is friendly and approachable, a strong reflection of the attitude of MyCEB and Malaysians in general. The dot further multiplies to form the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur, an instantly recognisable symbol of Malaysia. The structure also represents the understandings of business and trade; with a fluid contour to demonstrate creativity, innovation, dynamism and adaptability which are critical enablers to succeed in the thriving global business events industry.

The new logo is also presented with a new colour scheme including blue-grey and blue-black. The blue-grey on the ‘Malaysia’ font presents the country as a hub that facilitates the industry from behind-the-scenes. The blue-black colour for the ‘Convention & Exhibition Bureau’ represents a strong foundation for the organisation.

“We believe that the new logo better communicates our vibrant approach to business events in establishing Malaysia as one of the most preferred meetings destination in the world. With its modern and contemporary design, the new logo signals MyCEB’s focus to compete internationally to achieve its mission under the nation’s progressive Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) towards a developed nation in the year 2020,” said Zulkefli Haji Sharif, Chief Executive Officer, MyCEB.

The previous logo was created in 2009 since the initial inception of MyCEB. During that period, MyCEB has expanded its portfolio and increased its relevance with the establishment of the International Events Unit (IEU) as a division under MyCEB. IEU was tasked to make Malaysia the hub for international sports, arts, lifestyle and entertainment events; and to secure a variable portfolio of major, niche homegrown international sports, arts, lifestyle and entertainment events attracting visitors to Malaysia.

IEU will also be undertaking a new identity and to be officially known as Malaysia Major Events (MME). The new name is an indicative of Malaysia as the destination for Major Events, a strong and clear communication of what the brand portrays.

Malaysia Major Events’s logo:

Using the same symbolic dots of the MyCEB logo, the three connecting dots which carries three different colours - green, blue and orange – symbolizes the core values of Professionalism, Focus and Creativity. The letter ‘j’ does a double duty: the third dot creates an exclamation mark – a subtle yet sophisticated play weaving the two meanings together, which are creativity and the importance of major events. The series of dots in the logo further connotes Malaysia Major Events’ strength as a one-stop centre that assist event stakeholders with the smooth, seamless and successful staging of events.

With its crisp and vibrant new look, Malaysia Major Events continues its passion of attracting and sustaining major events into the country, while complementing MyCEB’s drive to make Malaysia an international hub for events.

Sarawak mulls appointment of China marketing rep

A marketing representative in China for the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and the Sarawak Tourism Board may be established towards the end of 2013 as part of the Malaysian state's move to focus on developing MICE business out of the massive market.

According to SCB's managing director, Mike Cannon, the role of the marketing representative will be to educate Chinese outbound travel consultants, association buyers and incentive players on what Sarawak can offer for business events.

Cannon said: “We are conducting a study to see if it is more appropriate to appoint a company or an individual as a marketing representative, where the representative should be located and how it should operate.”

SCB regards Greater China as its second most important international market after Singapore. Cannon said: “Singapore remains our top overseas target due to its proximity and direct flight access to Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, (but) we realise that Greater China has a fast growing economy and organisations, associations and corporations based in China want to explore the world for opportunities. We would be remiss if we don’t capitalise on this. And if we don’t act now, we will be forgotten in the stampede.”

The bureau is also in the midst of planning two-year programmes for the corporate meeting and association segments, and activities will include a greater frequency of sales missions to first-tier Chinese cities and familiarisation trips to Sarawak.

Cannon foresees the corporate meeting segment as having greater growth potential than the association segment, noting that “the latter tends to have their events within the country”. “But this trend is slowly changing,” he said.

SCB welcomed five Chinese events in 2012, the largest being the 9th World Congress of Chinese Medicine in Kuching, which saw more than 1,000 attendees.

MyCEB Secures Business Events Worth RM634.9 Million In Economic Impact For Malaysia In 2012

- MyCEB goes all out to achieve its mission under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to bring 2.9 million international business tourism arrivals to Malaysia by year 2020

Kuala Lumpur, 19 February 2013 – The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) has achieved a fulfilling year in 2012 with a solid performance towards positioning Malaysia as Asia’s business events hub. During its 2012 financial year of January to December, MyCEB has successfully secured 26 association meetings, to be held in the country over the next five years.

Together with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and its industry partners, the Bureau’s significant wins for 2012 include the prestigious 127th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session 2015, Asian Congress of Architects 2014 and the Offshore Technology Conference Asia 2014. Apart from expecting a total 35,482 of delegates’ arrival into Malaysia, an estimated RM 359 million worth of economic impact would be generated from the successful bid wins.

“MyCEB has also secured 109 corporate and incentive meetings for Malaysia this year. We are looking towards welcoming 25,604 delegates from all over the world during these events which will record an estimated RM 275.6 million in economic impact,” explains Mr. Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB. “Bids won cover a wide spectrum of industry sectors especially those

identified as National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) under the country’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). The breakdown of delegates can be divided into 58 percent of association meetings and 42 percent corporate and incentive meetings. We are glad to announce that collectively, an estimated contribution of RM634.9 million in economic impact will be generated from both association meetings and corporate and incentive events,” he further added.

The year in review also saw MyCEB providing support towards 255 business events, comprising of 50 percent of corporate and incentive meetings, 44 percent association meetings and six percent exhibition. In total, these events supported are estimated to drive an economic impact of RM 1.2 billion with more than 130,000 delegate arrivals.

Zulkefli concluded, “This stellar performance is the result of tremendous hard work which has been displayed by MyCEB and its industry partners. We are very committed to achieve the target of bringing 2.9 million international business tourism arrivals to Malaysia by year 2020 and to position the country as one of the top 5 destinations in Asia Pacific for international meetings.”

MyCEB will also be playing an active role in supporting the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

New bureau to help woo MICE clients to Penang

Penang has created a new bureau to facilitate and assist tourism players in courting future Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) clients.

State Domestic Trade, Consumer and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said the Penang International Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PICEB) would focus on promoting and marketing Penang effectively as a MICE destination.

“We intend for PICEB to be run by an independent team made up of members from the private sector. “Hoteliers, event organisers, venue owners and the like are invited to come and join this initiative. “We see it as a natural progression to the construction of MICE centres in Penang,” said Abdul Malik during PICEB’s launching ceremony at the 3rd Penang International MICE Conference at Hard Rock Hotel Penang on Saturday.

He said PICEB would be registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia and its pro-tem committee set up by March. “Locations for large conventions are decided up to three years before the event, so we want to be ready when the sPICE (Subterranean Pe-nang International Conference & Exhibition Centre) is completed,” Abdul Malik said.

He explained that aside from promoting Penang as a MICE hub, PICEB could also help small and medium sized convention centres to source and bid for international clients.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who opened the conference and launched PICEB, said courting MICE travellers would greatly benefit the state.

“On average, business travellers spend three to four times the amount normal tourists spend when on visits to Penang. “This can work out to be about RM6,000 and RM7,000 a traveller. “We want to tell people that they can come here not only to play and relax, but also to work and learn,” Lim said.

Penang stocks up on hardware to catch MICE

Plans are underway to set up a state-based convention bureau in Penang in the near future, part of the northern Malaysian state's scheme to upgrade its infrastructure in order to attract more MICE.

It is yet undetermined if the convention bureau will be government assisted or 100 per cent privately run, said Penang Global Tourism managing director, Ooi Geok Ling. “With the setting up of a convention bureau, the state can then go into active bidding,” said Ooi.

The creation of the bureau is timely with the opening of subterranean Penang International Convention & Exhibition Centre (sPICE) in Bayan Lepas scheduled for 2015. The centre will have a floor area of 4,459m2 and incorporates a business class hotel and F&B services. Another existing 1,200 rooms are available within a 10-minute drive from the site.

sPICE will be Penang’s first purpose-built MICE venue, located within 10 minutes from Penang International Airport and a short distance from Penang International Sports Arena (PISA). Ooi said the close proximity to PISA is an added advantage because PISA can also be used to hold exhibitions and dining functions should the need for more space arise.

The opening of sPICE has been delayed by a year due to the late handover of the site from the state government to the private construction company, Eco Meridian.

Another convention centre is slated to open in 2016 in Jelutong Expressway. The Light Convention Centre is also privately funded and developed by IJM Land. According to Ooi, the architectural details are still being finalised.

To raise awareness and source for MICE opportunities, Penang Global Tourism is holding its first international MICE conference in Penang, roughly scheduled to run this year-end. Ooi said that earlier MICE conferences hosted in the state only had local participants and speakers.

Penang has moved up the ranking of the International Congress and Convention Association from number 45 in 2010 to number 32 in 2011. The number of international association meetings increased from eight in 2010 to 12 last year.

Putting Sarawak on the map

Despite having been only in existence since 2006, the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) has been tirelessly promoting the state as a viable destination for conferences. But, Mike Cannon, SCB’s new managing director, says this does not mean simply bidding for every convention or conference willy-nilly.
To date, SCB has supported 206 convention bids, which has resulted in estimated direct delegate expenditure of RM215mil in Sarawak. This is just the amount spent by convention delegates on their hotel rooms, transport, meals and other miscellaneousexpenditures.
Borneo Convention CentreBorneo Convention Centre
In 2011, SCB supported 56 convention bids. Cannon said SCB aims beyond just direct expenditures and immediate tourism benefits.
“Whenever we bid for businesses and associations to hold their conferences in Sarawak, the criteria we look out for is that the convention should bring added value in some way to the people and communities in Sarawak. “For example, if we manage to land a dental conference in Sarawak, it also means that we are bringing in outside knowledge, added value in terms of education to our own dental professionals when the latter attend.”
Once, we decided to use postcards from Sarawak, and we slipped the postcards under the doors of over 250 delegates. — MIKE CANNONOnce, we decided to use postcards from Sarawak, and we slipped the postcards under the doors of over 250 delegates. — MIKE CANNON
“More than that, it also means trade opportunities coming because when you have these sort of professional conferences and trade shows, equipment and other manufacturers or importers come in as well,” Cannon said.
He added that there is a corporate-social-responsibility aspect to the “added value” segment.
Often, such conferences, especially those for medical fields, also organise trips for their delegates into Sarawak’s interior to help the indigenous peoples in any way possible.
“Sometimes the delegates spend maybe the night or even the whole day at the villages, before riding back via boat and four-wheel-drive vehicles to the conference location, and that is the adventure part we sell,” said Cannon.
Indeed, “Where Business And Adventure Meet” is the tagline SCB is marketing to potential clients, leveraging on the East Malaysian state’s “freshness”, given that SCB has only been in existence for six years.
Mutual benefit: Cannon says conventions can bring added value in various ways to the people and communities in Sarawak.Mutual benefit: Cannon says conventions can bring added value in various ways to the people and communities in Sarawak.
Cannon explains that the freshness factor for conference locations dip after about a decade. “But by then, we will also have established our core values, or principles as a conference destination. Which is what we’re offering now, business and adventure in one location.”
“You can be in a workshop in the morning, then helping to clean out the orang utan habitats in the afternoon, or helping out with longhouse construction after the conference sessions. “That is the beauty of Sarawak as a conventions destination,” said Cannon.
While the main cities of Sibu, Miri and Kuching play host to many of the conference bids won by SCB, there have also been out of the way places such as the Mulu Caves, which Cannon said was the location for an archeological conference and perfectly suited its subject matter.
Of course, clever marketing plays a huge role in presenting Sarawak as a convention centre, and Cannon and his team are always looking for new ways to beat international competition, especially with rivals in both South-East Asia and China, nevermind worldwide.

“Once, we decided to use postcards from Sarawak, and we slipped the postcards under the doors of over 250 delegates. “Throughout the event, we had about 50 delegates come and thank us for the postcards, especially in this day and age of email.” “Sure, not all of the 50 delegates are going to turn into clients either, but they will talk about it, things get spread through word of mouth, and our recognition increases.
“Basically, our competitors, from the US, Australia and Europe wanted to beat me up for the rest of the event,” Cannon joked. The competition is huge though, Cannon admits, as countries such as China and Australia, not to mention the more established places such as the US, have much deeper pockets.
Extra funds translate into better marketing material, not to mention a better ability to sponsor conventions to be held in their countries or cities. “This means that we have to pick our battles carefully, bid on the business where we already have a high possibility of winning coupled with a high return on investment,” said Cannon.
Having to choose their battles means that rather than trying to bid on as many conferences to fill up a year, Cannon and SCB have opted to bid for a rolling number of events in three year blocs. This, he explained, helps make the conferences that the SCB manages to land more manageable. “What a lot of people do not realise is that bids to land conferences are won a few years in advance. So the medical conference you are going for later this year? That was landed by the winning bidder back in 2009 or 2010,” said Cannon.
It also means that rather than feasting one year on several conferences in the state, then starving the next, there is a consistent number of events being held in the state which makes for more predictable performance and bottom-line.
“It is also seasonal. For 2010 we had more international conventions and seminars, while last year there were more national conferences. “What we are also doing is creating our own national-level events, which may come bi- or triannually, but it’s Sarawak’s,” said Cannon. However, this does not mean that SCB’s objectives conflict with the newly-established Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau and both the state and federal bodies work together to ensure that there is no conflict of interest.
