IPOH, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Thousands of people from all races and walks of life are expected to partake in the festivities of the Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House in Taiping, near here, this Saturday.

Among the highlights of the national-level event, which starts at 2pm, is a parade by contingents from various associations and uniform bodies, stretching 200 metres, and spectacular lion dance performances by the Johor World Championship Lion Dance Troupe.

"Through this celebration, we hope to strengthen racial unity and national integration," said state Health, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman, Nolee Ashilin Mohamed Radzi, when contacted.

She said there would also be multi-cultural performances at the main stage which had been styled and decorated like a Chinese imperial palace, as well as a Chinese craft exhibition and demonstrations, with the whole celebration coming to a climax at night.

As for the menu for guests, she said the spread would include Chinese-style fried mee hoon, yee sang, prawn mee, char kuay teow, chicken murtabak, satay, chicken rice and vegetarian food.

Nolee Ashilin said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz were expected to attend the celebration together with the state and local community leaders.

Bernama observed today that preparations for the open house were underway at the open space near the Larut, Matang and Selama Land and District Office in Taiping, with the decorated marquees already put up and red lanterns hung around the venue.
