EurAsia Cup Golf Team Asia Captain Briefs PM On Tournament

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Leading Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee on Thursday briefed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on the inaugural EurAsia Cup Golf Tournament to be hosted by Malaysia next month.

Thongchai, who is the Team Asia captain of the tournament, met with Najib for about 30 minutes at the prime minister's office.

Also present at the meeting were Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, DRB-Hicom Bhd Chief Operating Officer of Services & Properties Datuk Mohamed Razeek Md Hussain Maricar, Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han and EurAsia Golf Ltd senior director Charlie Tingey.

The EurAsia Cup, a team matchplay golf tournament that matches teams from Europe and Asia, is scheduled to be held at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam from March 27 to 29. DRB-Hicom is the presenting partner.

Modelled after the Ryder Cup tournament, the EurAsia Cup will see 10 leading players each from Europe and Asia play in the tournament. Yesterday, Thongchai announced the selection of Malaysian golfer Nicholas Fung as the first of his two captain's picks.

So far, four players have been selected to represent Team Asia, namely Malaysian Open current champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh and Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar of India. Thongchai is expected to name the other players soon.
