KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- Beginning March 15, Kuala Lumpur visitors will get to 'horse around' in the city, in conjunction with the Chinese Lunar Year of the Horse.

They will enjoy a carriage ride pulled by a horse throughout the city's heritage route lined with 12 scenic historic buildings. Such was the life in Kuala Lumpur in the 1800s, when the British and locals got around on horseback or horse-drawn carriages, especially in the vicinity of Merdeka Square.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the horse and carriage ride was set to become the latest tourist attraction of Kuala Lumpur. "The ride will spice up the Visit Malaysia Year 2014," he told a media conference after launching the horse and carriage ride at the KL Chinese New Year Cultural Festival celebration in the KL City Gallery here today.

He said the ride would take passengers for a scenic tour along Jalan Mahkamah Persekutuan to take in the sights of the Sultan Abdul Samad building, and pass the Masjid Jamek, one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur and located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak river.

The ride will also pass the City Theatre, St Mary's Church, Royal Selangor Club and Kuala Lumpur Children's Library before it ends at the KL City Gallery in Merdeka Square. Along the ride, the carriage driver would explain the background of the heritage buildings, said Tengku Adnan.

He said tickets for the ride were priced at RM50 per person or RM200 for the whole carriage. Tickets can be purchased at the KL City Gallery counter.

Tengku Adnan said the carriage ride tour would commence with scheduled rides between 10am and 11.30am. Afternoon rides are from 3pm to 4.30pm. The timing of the rides was aimed at ensuring they would not be affected by the city's peak-hour traffic congestion, he added.

Tengku Adnan said KL City Hall was optimistic the horse and carriage ride would become an iconic tourism product for Kuala Lumpur and had thus, set a target of 17,000 passengers throughout this year.

Mayor, Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said initially, there would be three carriages and six horses before the number of carriages were increased, based on public response.
