AirAsia named ‘Value Airline of the Year’ by magazine

SEPANG: AirAsia has been named the inaugural winner of a new category – “Value Airline of the Year for 2012” – by a monthly magazine covering the global airline industry.

The magazine, Penton Media’s Air Transport World® (ATW), said it chose AirAsia due to the carrier’s trailblazing efforts in the low-cost aviation industry. It was praised for having innovative solutions, efficient processes and a passionate approach to the business of connecting people, and serving the under-served markets. ATW will be presenting the award to AirAsia and the other winners at a ceremony in Singapore on Feb 13.

“Tony Fernandes is the Freddie Laker of Asia and he is to be congratulated for his persistence in the face of a host of obstacles to develop an airline that is the talk of every boardroom and government in the region,” said ATW chief editor Geoffrey Thomas, referring to
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia Bhd. The late Laker was a British entreprenuer who created the Skytrain service in the 70s, which offered low-cost travel between London and New York.
