AirAsia: We’ve taken corrective measures on fare disclosure

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia has stressed that it has taken corrective measures on fare disclosure following a suit filed against it by an Australian regulator.

“The issue about flights, related to whether all taxes and charges were displayed for customers, appears to have arisen from an IT issue in September last year,” the airline said. “As soon as we became aware of the matter (based on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s complaint), we took corrective action and are focused on ensuring that our customers have all relevant information on our fares,” AirAsia said in a statement.

AFP reported on Tuesday that AirAsia was hit with a lawsuit by ACCC, which had accused the budget airline of failing to publish its full fares on its website. According to the report, ACCC had claimed that some of the AirAsia’s fares stated on its website had not displayed prices inclusive of all taxes, duties, fees and other charges. The ACCC filed the suit in Australia on Jan 17.

AirAsia flies out of Australia from the Gold Coast, Darwin, Melbourne and Perth. Sydney will be the next destination come April. In its statement, AirAsia stressed that it was not aware of the problem until the ACCC brought the matter to court. Since then, it had corrected the matter on its website, AirAsia said.

“We intend to constructively resolve the matter with the ACCC, to address any issues they may have and to address any issue our customers may have had,” said AirAsia. According to AFP, the ACCC was seeking an injunction “to restrain AirAsia from engaging in misleading conduct in the future”.
