JAKARTA, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- "Musang King", the special Malaysian durian much sought after by the fruit lovers due to its exquisite taste and aroma, is to be promoted in Jakarta this year through the Malaysia Food Festival.
Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim who made the proposal, said Malaysia's culinary tourism would be promoted in Indonesia as part of the approaches to strengthen relations between the two countries.
"I wish to propose to Tourism Malaysia to promote the Musang King durian in Indonesia to enable its people to savour the fruit," he said at a luncheon with airline company and tourist agency heads organised by the Malaysia Tourism Office at a hotel, here.
The Musang King durian is expensive here with some supermarkets selling it for as high as Rp100,000 (about RM30) for two pieces of the fruit and at US$50 (RM167) for a whole fruit.
Tourism Malaysia director in Indonesia, Nor Aznan Sulaiman when met at the luncheon said the agency's office here planned to organise the Malaysia Food Festival between May and June, and was prepared to promote the Musang King durian as well. "If the durian season does not coincide with the food festival, we can promote the Musang King on another occasion," he said.
Nor Aznan said there had been Indonesians visitng Malaysia, especially Penang, enjoying the Musang King while on a medical check-up through the health tourism package.
Some have also been savouring the Musang King in places like Jalan Alor in the busy tourist belt of Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
