GEORGE TOWN, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- The Armenian Street Heritage Hotel will be the latest attraction for tourists and visitors in Penang to explore the uniqueness of the George Town heritage site.

Located at No: 139, Lebuh Carnarvon here, the hotel allows guests to take in the sights of almost the entire heritage area, right up to the coastline of the Penang island.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, at the opening of the Armenian Street Heritage Hotel today, said the hotel was one of more than 1,700 buildings which stood within the core area of the world heritage site.

"I am personally, very proud of this project and would like to congratulate the owners, Giat Suria Sdn Bhd, for reviving and turning around a building that had been abandoned for more than 10 years, into something elegant and classy that you see today," he said. He said the opening of the hotel was timely, as the country celebrated Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Lim said recently, George Town as a Unesco heritage site, was listed the eighth holiday hotspot out of the top 40 destinations worldwide for 2014, by British daily, The Guardian, adding that Penang had much room to improve its tourism potential.

"The Armenian Street Heritage Hotel is a project undertaken with much love and passion, especially for George Town's heritage values. Just steps away from the heritage trails of museums, temples, eateries and the world-famous street paintings by Ernest Zacharevic. "This is undoubtedly, a perfect accommodation choice for any visitor to Penang," he added.
