More than 10,000 viewers are expected to attend the Tropfest SEA 2014 Festival Day at The Esplanade on Jan 25, featuring Jakarta-based White Shoes and The Couples Company and local cello rock group, Paladin.
Tropfest SEA managing director Joe Sidek said the festival would also announce the top 12 finalists' films selected from over 180 short film entries from nine Southeast Asian countries.
"Bringing these finalists to Penang to showcase their work and afford them an opportunity tapping into the global market, marks the start of an exciting new stage of their Tropfest SEA journey," he told a press conference here Tuesday.
Tropfest SEA is supported by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia and Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau under the tourism and culture ministry.
Among the top 12 finalists were Laek directed by Mony Kann Darung from Cambodia; Chicken by Yihwen Chen (Malaysia); Rice by Ines Sothea (Cambodia); The Strange Detective by Chan Kean Wah (Malaysia); Rice Border Love by Supawit Buaket (Thailand); and Moth in Twilight by J. E. Tiglao (Philippines).
In addition to receiving worldwide exposure, the first prize winner of Tropfest 2014 will be awarded a US$10,000 cash prize sponsored by Tropfest SEA, and a trip to Los Angeles to meet some leading movie industry leaders, sponsored by Motion Picture Association.
