The wheels of cycling tourism are turning fast

PUTRAJAYA: Bike ride packages are now gaining a foothold in Malaysian tourism.

“It started last year with just two travel operators offering cycling packages. Now there are seven operators offering 30 such attractions,” said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, adding that packages were on offer outside Putrajaya, too.

“Almost all states in the country now have bike rides. This is the result of the co-operation between the private sector and the Government,” Dr Ng said after participating in the Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia Bike Ride @ Putrajaya 2012 cycling event here yesterday.

Dr Ng hailed Putrajaya as a suitable location to promote cycling tourism, citing reasons such as the administrative capital’s availability of cycling space, architectural beauty, and the green lung preserved in many of its botanical gardens.

“Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia Bike Ride started as a domestic product but has now gained international recognition,” Dr Ng said, adding that talks with local airlines were in the works to further boost cycling tourism.
