KUALA LUMPUR: The iconic Majestic Hotel has re-opened its doors to guests after 29 years. The old colonial hotel situated along Jalan Hishamuddin was closed in 1984 and the building used by the National Art Gallery and the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Association.
YTL Hotels executive director Datuk Mark Yeoh said that he was confident that the hotel's rebirth would attract more tourists, reclaiming its place as one of Asia's best properties. “We are grateful to the Government for being the custodian of the heritage building and we will do our best to maintain its quality and services,” he said at the hotel's grand opening last night.
He said that the hotel, which has undergone a major revamp, has been listed as one of the Leading Hotels of The World, making it the only hotel in the city to be part of the prestigious list. “We are very privileged to be ranked equal to other luxurious hotels such as The Ritz in London, The Pierre in New York and Hotel le Bristol in Paris.”
The hotel is directly opposite another iconic landmark the Moorish-styled Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. The Majestic Wing, which is the fully restored original five-storey hotel, houses suites, The Colonial Cafe, The Bar and The Tea Lounge.
A new 15-storey Tower Wing houses the reception, deluxe rooms and suites, Opus One Restaurant, 16 meeting rooms, a pillarless ballroom that can seat 1,200 people, a gymnasium and a swimming pool. There is a spa in a separate building with its own swimming pool.
A second two-storey building called The Smokehouse features a lounge, grooming room, cigar room, private dining area, screening room and a cardroom.
