Batik extravaganza to kick off on Nov 24

KUALA LUMPUR: It is that time again for a fun-filled batik extravaganza. Viva Malaysia Batik, which kicks off on Nov 24, includes an almost three-week Batik XChange event where tourists and locals can try their hand at batik painting and discover designs from producers nationwide. There will also be a batik fun walk, demonstrations, handicraft making, fashion shows and a batik book launch.

The event will culminate with the grand finals of the Piala Seri Endon batik design competition on Dec 11 during the Kuala Lumpur International Batik Convention and Exhibition (KLIB). KLIB is scheduled from Dec 9 to 11.

The annual event is organised by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia or Penyayang and is the brainchild of its founder the late
Tun Endon Mahmood, wife of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Their daughter and Penyayang chairman Nori Abdullah said the event is part of the Malaysia Batik Crafted for the World Movement which is now in its eighth year.

“This year is very exciting. Viva Malaysia Batik not only has a repertoire of activities but it will also be packaged into a three-year tourism programme. “Join us in celebrating batik as we express it to the world,” she said here yesterday.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen will launch Viva Malaysia Batik on Nov 30 at Malaysian Tourism Centre (MaTiC) in Jalan Ampang.

Penyayang
chief executive officer Datuk Leela Mohd Ali said Malaysia needs its batik cultural heritage to be showcased to the world. “It is a holistic batik cum tourist-centric programme,” she said, adding that it was a continued legacy of Tun Endon. The Batik XChange event will see batik producers showcase the best of Malaysian batik at three venues, namely Central Market from Nov 24 to Dec 7, MaTiC (Dec 1 to Dec 4) and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Dec 9 to Dec 11.
