KUCHING, July 25 (Bernama) -- All three-star hotels and above in Sarawak have halal certificates issued by the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department and recognised by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said. As such, he said, unlike in the peninsula, the halal issue concerning restaurants in major hotels in Sarawak did not arise.
Speaking to reporters after declaring open the Nizamir Textiles Sdn Bhd here Sunday, he nevertheless reminded Muslims to check the backgrounds of restaurants to ensure they offer halal food. The department, he said, would continue to carry out checks to ensure the halal logo displayed in restaurants were not abused. Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak Baitulmal Fund would allocate RM1.2 million to 1,200 mosques and surau in the state to implement programmes during the Ramadan month.
