SIBU, July 28 (BERNAMA) -- Sibu town will have a new attraction beginning this Sunday. The new Sibu Cultural Heritage Centre, which occupies the former the old Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Administrative Building, will be open to the public from 11am after its soft opening ceremony earlier in that day. According to Daniel Ngieng, the council deputy chairman, one of its main components would be the mini museum located on the first floor. "Visitors will be able to see ceramic items from China, Japan and Siam (Thailand) dating back to the 11th century. "They will be among the more than 10,000 items on display," he told a press conference to announce its soft opening by Second Finance Minister/ Minister of Environment and Public Health, Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh.
Daniel said besides sections on the town history, there would be cultural exhibits from the town's five major communities namely the Iban, Chinese, Malay, Orang Ulu and Melanau. He said a private company had contributed RM5 million to refurbish the old council building to become the cultural heritage centre. Meanwhile, the museum would be open from Tuesday to Sunday except Monday and Public Holidays, according to its manager Ling Muk Jii. "The opening hours are from 9am till 5pm," he said. He said it would still be managed by the Sibu Civic Centre where it was formerly located.
