Sabah Banks On New Haneda Airlinks

MALAYSIA Airlines' (MAS) introduction of thrice-weekly flights from Kota Kinabalu to Haneda Airport, Tokyo, from November 15, is expected to help Sabah boost Japanese arrivals. Japan is Sabah's sixth biggest source market last year, and its travellers are high-yield tourists who stay an average of five nights in the destination and spend an average of RM2,620 (US$815) per visit, according to Sabah Tourism Board’s senior marketing manager Tay Shu Lan.

The board and inbound players will participate in the upcoming World Travel Fair in Tokyo this September. Birdwatchers and financially-independent women were new segments of the Japanese market Sabah aimed to attract, said Tay. MAS' new services, which use B737-800 aircraft, will complement its existing 11 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Narita, twice-weekly direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Narita and five-weekly flights from Kota Kinabalu to Osaka via Kuala Lumpur.
