NESTLED at the edge of Kuala Perlis, the Al-Hussain Mosque stands as a majestic testament to modern Islamic architecture, seamlessly blending with the tropical landscape.

Officially inaugurated by Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail on Oct 8, 2011, this mosque has quickly become more than just a place of worship; it's a symbol of unity, a beacon of faith, and a tourist attraction.

A RESORT AMIDST FAITH

Designed with a resort-like ambiance, the Al-Hussain Mosque transcends traditional architectural boundaries to embrace a modern Islamic aesthetic that encourages appreciation for nature.

The choice of natural materials such as coral stones, broken quartz, and marble emphasises its commitment to harmony with the environment.

What sets the Al-Hussain Mosque apart is its floating structure, providing a serene and idyllic setting that extends from the Kuala Perlis shoreline.

It's a breathtaking sight, whether you're approaching from the legendary Langkawi Island or the bustling ikan bakar (BBQ fish) food court nearby.

Its location and design destined it to be a distinguished landmark in Perlis, drawing in both locals and tourists, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.

A CAPACITY TO UNITE

With the ability to accommodate up to 1001 worshippers, the mosque's spacious main hall and multipurpose prayer hall invite individuals to immerse themselves in tranquillity and devotion.

The beauty of the mosque, both externally and internally, needs to be experienced firsthand to be truly appreciated.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ICON

The inception of the Al-Hussain Mosque, aimed at being an iconic gateway to Langkawi, was inspired by His Highness Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.

The vision was brought to life by Tan Sri Mohd Ariffin Yusuf, fulfilling a charitable legacy. This monumental project was supported by the Perlis Council of Islamic Religious and Malay Customs, highlighting a collaborative spirit.

The gala invited local media groups which include New Straits Times Press (NSTP), Bernama, Star Media Group Berhad, Astro, RTM, and Sin Chew Daily.

KUALA LUMPUR: In positioning itself as the premier gateway to Borneo, Sarawak launched its transformative "Gateway to Borneo" campaign at the ITB Berlin 2024 international travel trade show.

The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in a statement said the campaign signifies a brand refresh and strategically positions Sarawak as the premier gateway to Borneo, encompassing Kalimantan, Sabah and Brunei.

Targeting four million visitor arrivals this year through the campaign, Sarawak aims to amplify its allure as a prime tourism destination, inviting global travellers to embark on a journey of discovery and inspiration.

Complementing the campaign's overarching theme is a refreshed "Sarawak More to Discover" (SMTD) destination logo, an update which maintains the vigour and excitement of the region's marketing strategy — to position the state as a plethora of culture, adventure, nature, food and festivals, along with authentic experiences not found anywhere else in the world and yet to be discovered.

The STMD logo serves as a visual representation of Sarawak's pristine rainforests, the allure of its coastal waters and the colourful diverse ethnicities of its people, said STB.

The logo also showcases the majestic silhouette of the Rhinoceros hornbill, an iconic symbol synonymous with Sarawak's cherished moniker, "Land of the Hornbills".

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the campaign introduces the progression of Sarawak's tourism stories.

"We are thrilled to unveil the evolution of Sarawak's tourism narratives with our 'Gateway to Borneo' campaign.

"It is not just a geographic distinction but also embodies a contemporary and timeless aesthetic, resonating with the evolving tastes of our discerning audience. This strategic move not only reinforces our commitment to digitalisation but also highlights Sarawak's pivotal role as the entry point to the wonders of Borneo.

"We invite the world to uncover the wonders that await in Sarawak, as the 'Gateway' into a new world of experience, discovery, and inspiration; to breathtaking nature and boundless adventure, where the past resonates, and the future unfolds; and where there is So Much More to Discover."

Building on the foundation laid last year, STB also signed a renewed memorandum of understanding with Tischler Reisen (TR), to continue to elevate Sarawak's prominence among European travellers.

With TR's 40-year track record and an extensive network of 600 agencies throughout Germany, Sarawak aims to showcase its diverse tour packages both online and offline, enticing discerning travellers across Europe.

"This partnership aligns with Sarawak's strategic vision to position itself as a preferred destination in the European market, while the remarkable 121 per cent surge in European visitor arrivals in 2023 against 2022 highlights the growing appeal of Sarawak's offerings.

"With the resilient 81.5 per cent recovery achievement of the Europe market's performance in 2023, as compared to 2019, the state's best year for European visitor arrivals, Sarawak is optimistic to surpass 2019 levels in terms of European visitor arrivals this year," read the statement.

It said Sarawak also heightened its momentum to champion Responsible Tourism and Sustainability, embodying a tourism philosophy that prioritises economic, social, and environmental impacts.

Meanwhile, STB said the upcoming Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), to be held from June 28 to 30, underscores music's dynamic nature across generations and cultures.

The RWMF, which celebrates its 27th year, embraces the transformative power of music, weaving together culture and environment with its theme 'Evolution'.

"As millennials inherit the mantle, RWMF becomes a platform to amplify indigenous voices and shared wisdom in rainforest conservation.

"Empowering the next generation, RWMF fosters dialogue, fuels actions, and charts a course toward sustainability, ensuring a harmonious co-existence of culture and nature for generations."

Multilingual brochure aims to extend Sabah's tourism appeal in key European markets

KOTA KINABALU: Recognising the importance of diversity in language, the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) went a step further in reaching out to a wider audience by unveiling a multilingual brochure for an ongoing tourism event in Berlin.

This is to enhance the experience of German-speaking travellers and to better highlight the captivating destination of Sabah, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

She said Germany contributed the second highest number of tourist arrivals to Sabah from Europe, after the United Kingdom and Ireland last year. It was followed by the Netherlands and France, she added.

Liew said this showed that it was important to engage with the German market and provide information tailored to its needs and preferences.

“While English remains widely spoken and understood, STB recognises the importance of providing information in multiple languages (for) travellers from different backgrounds,” she said when launching the brochure at ITB Berlin recently. The event is being held from Tuesday to Thursday (March 5 to 7).

“The decision to have the brochure in German, Dutch, French and Spanish reflects STB's dedication to ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all visitors,” she added.

She said STB embraced linguistic diversity in catering to the unique preferences of visitors.

“By offering information in (multiple languages), we aim to enhance the accessibility of Sabah's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty to a broader audience," she added.

These attractions include Sabah's wildlife sanctuaries, marine parks and community-based tourism.

Jerami 'I Love Kedah' tarik perhatian pengunjung

Yan: Idea seorang pemilik warung di tepi sawah untuk menganjurkan pesta jerami gulung sejak seminggu lalu berjaya menarik pengunjung tempatan termasuk dari Singapura dan Thailand.

Pengusaha warung berkenaan Mat Desa Abu Hassan, 61, berkata dia sangat bersyukur idea itu berjaya menggamit pelancong sekali gus meningkatkan aktiviti ekonomi penduduk setempat.

"Kami juga sediakan tujuh tempat bergambar, jerami dibentuk huruf seperti I Love Kedah, I Love Yan, I Love Wateb dan papan tanda Ulu Sedaka Yan Kedah.

Tourism Selangor relies on Indian trade associations to grow arrivals

Tourism Selangor, the tourism promotion agency of Selangor state in Malaysia, has formalised partnerships with three major Indian travel trade associations – Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI), Network of Indian MICE Agents (NIMA), and South Tamil Nadu Association of Travel & Tourism – to increase tourist arrivals from the South Asian nation.

These strategic alliances are also expected to strengthen the partnership of the tourism board with travel agents across India.

“Our collaboration with these three associations will help us to identify markets in India that hold potential for us. India is a large country with many states so with the help of these MoCs, we are expecting to forge relationships with travel agents across the country,” Azrul Shah Bin Mohamad, CEO, Tourism Selangor told TTG Asia on the sidelines of the Memorandum of Collaboration signing ceremony last week.

As part of the Visit Selangor Year 2025 campaign, the ambition is to attract 100,000 Indian tourists. The most recent data available with the tourism board indicates that in 2022, Selangor welcomed 65,573 visitors from India.

Azrul noted: “At present, India is our fifth largest source market for international tourists. Our goal is to elevate India to one of our top three source markets. This is our first visit to India post-Covid as part of Tourism Malaysia’s roadshow, where we covered cities including Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and New Delhi. We are aiming to organise a standalone roadshow in India in the near future.”

OTOAI president Riaz Munshi said: “We are dedicated to working closely with Tourism Selangor to create new opportunities for our members and contribute to the growth of tourism in the region.”

Some of the products that Tourism Selangor is looking to promote in the Indian market include theme parks, eco-tourism, gastronomy, shopping, MICE, beaches and adventure.
