Penang ranked among Asia's top 10 street food cities

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has been ranked among Asia's top 10 street food cities by Time Out.

The British media and hospitality company also listed Hanoi, Singapore, Mumbai, Chiang Mai, Tainan, Osaka, Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Chengdu.

Author Katie Lockhart praised Penang's culinary heritage, saying George Town would be her top choice if she had to pick one place to eat street food for life.

"A cultural mix of Malay, Chinese, Peranakan and Indian, there is a laundry list of specialities to try here, including char kuey teow, assam laksa, roti canai and hokkien mee. Good luck asking a local where the best place to try each dish is, you will always get a different answer," she said.

Lockhart recommended char kuey teow from Goggles Man Char Kuey Teow or Left-handed Char Koay Teow.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai congratulated Penang, writing on social media: "Congrats Penang! Penang has been listed by a global media and entertainment platform — Time Out — for the 10 best street food cities in Asia you need to eat through."

Penang has earned international food accolades before.

In July 2016, food writer James Oseland endorsed the city as the world's best food destination.

That same year, CNN ranked Penang Assam Laksa among the world's hottest street foods, while The Culture Trip listed Penang among the 15 best cities globally for food.
