KOTA KINABALU: The sixth edition of the Kiulu Adventure Challenge, one of Sabah's premier multi-sport events, will return in Kiulu on Dec 7.
This year's edition is expected to attract 700 Malaysian and foreign participants, up from 500 last year.
Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the event was part of his long-term goal as Kiulu assemblyman to position the area as a sports tourism hub, especially with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
"Kiulu is well-known for its nature attractions, especially its
white-water rafting," he said during a press conference for the race at
the Sabah Tourism Board office here.
Last year's event drew more than 30 international participants from Brunei, the Philippines, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia and China.
This year will see participants compete in mountain biking, trail running and water rafting, with both solo and team categories available.
In the solo category, athletes will tackle a 30km mountain bike ride and 11km trail run, divided into Men's and Women's Open (18–40 years) and Veteran (41+ years).
A 6km fun run is also open to all ages.
In the Team of Three category, participants will complete a 30km mountain bike ride, 11km trail run and 3km water rafting.
Teams can consist three men (three adults, or two adults and one veteran 41+) or mixed groups of men and women.
The event will also feature community activities, such as a slingshot competition, group mural painting with schoolchildren and local artists, a handicraft exhibition and sale, a creative "Dalai" competition showcasing Job's Tears beadwork, traditional games, tug-of-war and a Double Dart Open.
"The Kiulu Adventure Challenge is more than just a sporting event. It promotes Kiulu's natural beauty, engages the local community and creates sustainable economic opportunities," Joniston said.
Early bird registration runs until Sept 17, with final registration
closing on Nov 3.
