Alive From Australia Race Into The Lead In RLIR 2016 Racing Class

LANGKAWI, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Royal Langkawi International Regatta's (RLIR 2016) new kid on the block, Duncan Hine's Alive team from Australia made the most of the fine sailing conditions to lead the Racing Class after the completion of the first day competition, here Tuesday.

Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, accumulated three overall points in its quest to win the Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy, ahead of defending champion Team Oi!, also from Australia.

"The first race was a close finish with Oi! but we were in command during the second race. We can safely say that this is our first race in Langkawi although we have competed in the Raja Muda Cup before," said Hine after completing two of the 10 rounds in the competition.

Hine said he hoped to continue the momentum in tomorrow's 'Harbour Race'.

Meanwhile, Oi! skippered by seasoned campaigner Peter Ahern finished in second place after accumulating four penalty points while Millennium Racing team, also from Australia are in third with six points.

Malaysia's sole representative in the class, Ulumulu which is skippered by Jeremy Koo are in fourth place with seven penalty points.

The RLIR 2016 features 37 teams competing in eight categories.

The 14th edition of the RLIR will be officially opened tonight by Tunku Panglima Besar Kedah, Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim who is also the vice commodore of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.
