World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship 2013 Continues Its 6th Qualifying Round


PUTRAJAYA, 7 Oct 2013: The sixth and final qualifying round of the annual World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship (WAITGC) 2013 organised by Tourism Malaysia kicked off today at the Templer Park Country Club, Rawang and to be followed at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, Kota Kemuning.

The four-day qualifying round of the 20th edition of the WAITGC 2013  is participated by 23 teams comprising 15 teams from Australia, 3 teams from India, 2 teams each from Brunei and Malaysia, and a team from Indonesia.

This is the final chance for participants to vie for the 5 spots in the Grand Final comprising 2 spots in the gross category, 1 spot in the nett category and 2 spots in the senior category.

The Templer Park Country Club, conveniently located off Rawang Highway, is a mere 45-minute drive  from most places in the Klang Valley and as close as 15 minutes from the city centre. The golf course is jointly designed by legendary Japanese professional golfer, Jumbo Ozaki, and renowned golf course architect, Kentaro Sato.

The Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, located in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, is the centrepiece of an enormous residential development that’s situated less than half an hour’s drive from downtown Kuala Lumpur. Designed by Australian architect, Ross Watson, in the late 1990s, Kota Permai has hosted numerous prestigious competitions including the Volvo Masters of Asia in 2002 and 2004, the Regional World Cup Qualifying in 2005, and the 48th edition of the Malaysian Open in 2008.  

Winners of the 6th qualifying round will join all the winners of the previous five rounds at the Grand Final of WAITGC 2013, which is scheduled to take place at the Mines Resort and Golf Club from 26 to 28 November, 2013.

WAITGC is Tourism Malaysia’s initiative in promoting and positioning  the country as a top-of-mind golf destination in the region. The tournament is played in Strokeplay  for the gross category and Stableford for the nett and senior category. Since its debut in 1994, WAITGC has emerged as a well-regarded tournament and one of the most highly anticipated golfing events in the region attracting more than 500 participants every year.

The home-grown event not only tests the golfing skills of the participants but also encourages them to explore and  discover the myriad of  colourful cultures and traditions in Malaysia, as well as the country’s delectable cuisines and awesome tourist attractions. The participation of international media has also boosted the stature of the tournament and placed Malaysia on the global map.  

The World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship is managed by the Golf Club Managers Association of Malaysia (GCMAM) and  is sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA).
