KOTA KINABALU: The first turtle rescue centre in Sabah at Gaya Island here was launched during the weekend.
To mark the occasion, its first turtle tenant named Bobby, rescued five months ago, was released back into the sea during the ceremony at Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre on Saturday. The resort is operated by YTL Hotels.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who launched the centre, helped to carry Bobby from his holding tank into the water.
The rescue centre is located at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, which also carries out coral reef restoration and marine conservation education programmes. The resort's marine biologist, Scott Mayback, said Bobby was found floating near the island in very bad shape.
"The only thing that Bobby atefed on for the first three months was fish oil, which we injected directly to his oesophagus."
Masidi touched on the importance of conserving nature and turning it into a sustainable economic earner for the state. He said Sabah was headed in the right direction, ensuring its natural resources are used properly. He also expects Sabah's tourist arrivals would exceed the three million targeted for this year with tourism receipts hitting RM5.8 billion.
