This year’s lantern fest to be the biggest ever

KUALA LUMPUR: This year's 1Malaysia Tourism Lantern Festival is set to be the biggest ever as for the first time it will stretch for 10 days. Before this, the festive was only a day-long affair.
Over 400,000 tourists are expected to witness the event that will run from Sept 21 to Sept 30. A giant six-meter high lantern of the 1Malaysia logo is poised to be the “star attraction” at Central Market.
“Last year, about 40,000 people attended the festival,” said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen at a press conference on Thursday. “With more activities lined up during the 10 days, we are targeting 400,000 this time.”
Dr Ng said the giant 1Malaysia lantern was constructed by 200 participants, made up of university students, teachers and even housewives. “This gigantic lantern is about six metres tall and four metres wide. This is truly a Malaysia Boleh effort,” added Dr Ng.
The festival will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at 8pm. This will be followed by a 2.5km lantern procession from Central Market to Petaling Street and back. A host of activities such as lantern-making demonstrations, stage performances, static displays of lanterns, lion and dragon dances and cultural performances will be featured during the fest.
Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall president Datuk Liew Kon Sengsaid dragon lanterns would be heavily featured in this year's procession and decorations as this year was the Year of the Dragon.
