Yen Yen: Chartered flights can boost tourism

PUTRAJAYA: Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said tourist arrivals from second-line cities will be boosted by having more scheduled chartered flights flying directly to Malaysia.
She said that at the moment there was no direct flight from Russia to Malaysia, with tourists having to transit from Bangkok and no direct connectivity from emerging cities such as Wuhan and Chengdu in China. “We are now working very hard to get 120 charters from Russia and will assist the airlines,” she said.
As at June, Malaysia received 62,647 tourists flying in on nearly 400 scheduled chartered flights from China, Korea and Taiwan, contributing some RM150mil to the economy.
Meanwhile, Dr Ng said Tourism Malaysia would file for a stay of execution on a recent Kuala Lumpur High Court order to liquidate its business arm Pembangunan Pelancongan Nasional Sdn Bhd (Pempena). Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Dr Victor Wee said the application was expected to be filed by the end of this week.
“We decided to pursue a stay of execution and appoint a new solicitor to represent us,” he said at a press conference at the Tourism Ministry office here yesterday. It was reported that the High Court had last month ordered Pempena to be wound up after it failed to pay Kah Bintang Auto Sdn Bhd RM12.4mil for the purchase of 120 units of Hyundai Sonata to run its taxi service.
According to court papers, Kah Bintang had filed a petition in the High Court seeking the liquidation of Pempena if it could not come up with the sum. The petition was heard on June 13 and Pempena was unrepresented, leading the court to set 14 days for them to pay up or be wound up.
